Yum. Check out the pipes glow. Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Post by: Desmostro on May 03, 2009, 03:15:32 PM That's pretty interesting:
the NRV588 (http://www.sportrider.com/features/146_0803_norton_nrv588/index.html) currently produces 165 horsepower at 11,450 rpm from its liquid-cooled twin-rotor engine, yet weighs just 289 pounds with all fluids but fuel... I read, which makes me an 'effing expert, that rotary engines, while powerful and super light, are quite dirty and send a lot of burning stuff out the back. I wonder if there's a way - no one has ever thought of this I'm sure - to come up with a better fuel injection that atomizes/ oxygenates better for the rotary engine... After burner? [cheeky] Otherwise - don't look for them in California anytime soon. Flames coming out the back and all. Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. That motor sounds evil, just one long, partially contained explosion trying to get out. It sounded like he short shifted and it still wanted to wheelie. [popcorn] Should we get spidey one? Roll the tape! [popcorn] Is a rotory motor a three cycle? Did Wankel die a mysterious death like Diesel? Oooooo.... (c'mon, gotta keep the thread alive somehow) EDIT This just in from the news/history/thread-survival desk. Take it away, wikipedia... Diesel's Death In the evening of 29 September 1913, Diesel boarded the post office steamer Dresden in Antwerp on his way to a meeting of the Consolidated Diesel Manufacturing company in London. He took dinner on board the ship and then retired to his cabin at about 10 p.m., leaving word for him to be called the next morning at 6:15 a.m. He was never seen alive again. Ten days later, the crew of the Dutch boat "Coertsen" came upon the corpse of a man floating in the sea. The body was in such an advanced state of decomposition that they did not bring it aboard. Instead, the crew retrieved personal items (pill case, wallet, pocket knife, eyeglass case) from the clothing of the dead man, and returned the body to the sea. On the 13th of October these items were identified by Rudolf's son, Eugen Diesel, as belonging to his father. No one knows for sure how or why Diesel was lost overboard. Grosser (1978)[5] presents a credible case for suicide. There are conspiracy theories that suggest that various people's business interests may have provided motives for homicide. Evidence is limited for all explanations.[6] Storys like this intrigue me. Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Post by: enzo on May 04, 2009, 11:58:32 AM Can I point out the obvious? How cool it is that no parts need to start/stop/change direction like in a piston cycle? Neat-0.

and from my "I don't have anything more of value to contribute to this discussion" file . . . I've always thought the name Wankel sounded dirty. ;D Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Post by: Desmostro on May 04, 2009, 01:03:34 PM It's pretty outrageous to say that an industry as upstanding as the Petroleum industry would ever be at odds with anyone with competing interests.
Diesel simply invented an engine that produced more horse power and can run on vegetable oils that sell for like $0.03 a gallon and can be produced nearly anywhere except the middle east. Why would that be a problem? [laugh] ... Did Wankel die a mysterious death like Diesel? Oooooo.... so sexy... (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ab/Radial_engine.gif) tangent ahead: PS omg this mazda is fecking fetching! 1967 first rotary engine Mazda. Post by: desmoquattro on May 04, 2009, 05:30:45 PM Didn't Wankel do the radial piston engine as well used in WWI? I don't think so (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_engine#History). You're thinking of the rotary piston engine, which has its cylinders arranged in a radial configuration. I could have sworn the bi-planes had these "Wankel radial or rotating engines. There's also the rotating kind They did have piston rotary engines, as opposed to a pistonless Wankel rotary engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine). Next generation aircraft generally had radial piston engines, which describe the arrangement of the cylinders. Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Post by: desmoquattro on May 04, 2009, 05:36:14 PM so sexy... (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ab/Radial_engine.gif) BTW - That diagram is of a conventional radial piston engine, where the cylinders stay put and the crankshaft rotates. On the rotary radial piston engine, the cylinders rotate and the crankshaft stays put: http://www.animatedengines.com/gnome.shtml (http://www.animatedengines.com/gnome.shtml) Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Title: Re: Norton NRV588 Video.... and the sound. Post by: FogDuc on May 04, 2009, 09:27:07 PM Sounds cool. Too bad that they are using a Spondon extruded beam frame circa 1994. I guess that they could race it in Formula Dinosaur or something.

[laugh] My 3rd gen (twin turbo) does (The glowing red pipe that is!!) after a few spirited runs into the 15psi range. [thumbsup] Earlier ones like my RX2 did have flames out the pipe inc glowing red pipes.... Even with my cat still in place the sound is glorious when at full honk. Second only to the RS.
