Title: 696 Key Issues
Post by: zLoki on May 04, 2009, 12:55:06 AM
Discovered an interesting thing about the 696 keys this weekend.

The tip of the key can break off and it will NOT work in your ignition.

As it turns out Ducati Roadside wont help because technically there is nothing wrong with the bike.  The dealer wont help because they dont make keys soooo...

After some dremel work by the guy at SoCal Ducati (he totally helped me out), the key worked but it took some wiggling to get it in and clearly I was not going to take it back out until I got the spare from home.

Oh and getting a new key?  $75 for the blank, then you take it somewhere to be cut, then back to have it programmed.  It's going to cost almost $150...

So take care of those keys...

Are 696 keys 'pointier' than older Monster keys? Any pics of a (unbroken preferably..) 696 key?

Are duc keys really that expensive in the US? Here (Sweden) they're like 15-20 usd and I had one cut for about 5 usd last month

Kinda nice though that there at least is ONE thing thats cheaper over here..

Wow!

After reading this post I looked at the tip of my M1100 key, and it does look kinda fragile.

Thanks for the tip.

Nothing fragile looking about my key.

How did you break off your tip?

[reminds me of a guy in high school that stabbed another student in the leg with a pencil and broke the lead (graphite) off inside.]

It only cost me $30 to the key cut, maybe you can find somewhere else to have it done.

sorry for the blur

I know, i have one, and i can't for the life of me think of how i would go about breaking that off, short of a pair of tin snips.

Not really sure how it happened, a few weeks back noticed the tip was a bit bent on the sides, thought nothing of it.  Then when I tried to put the key in the other day, it would not go all the way.  Cant be sure if it broke off before or during but it was a clean break, almost straight across the top.  :'(

I just had a key made for my '02 620. $45 for the key blank, and $31 to have it cut and programmed. Search around your area, some locksmiths have the ability to program most keys, and it's a helluva lot cheaper than going thru Ducati N.A.
