Title: One more step towards a cafe racer, Pods and a taillight.
Post by: El Matador on May 04, 2009, 09:27:42 AM
So in case anyone thought I had forgotten about my 695, here are some pics of a little work I did to it this weekend.

I never liked the stock taillight, and I've always wanted one more cafe-style to go with the rest of my bike, so I found this one lying around and fabbed a quick bracket to see how it looked. It came out pretty well, but I'm not sure about it yet, I want a more "bullet" style taillight.

I also added pods, it is amazing how much they clean the bike up. A little bit of wire relocation and the bike is looking damn good.

I made some custom velocity stacks out of glass fibre, but I think I'm gonna go ahead and make them out of Carbon.  [evil] They are much larger than the stock ones that come in the airbox, and some quick numbers tell me that they should add a couple of HP, just like the TPO Beast kit.

I haven't been able to ride it yet as I'm waiting on a new battery  [bang] [bang] [bang]

Some of you might notice that I'm missing an exhaust ;)  About that, ummm yeah, custom carbon cafe megaphones are on the way. "muaaahahahahahahahah"

Sorry about how filthy the bike is, The tank looks like one big smudge in the pics  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Oh and, seeing the bike like this only makes me want to put on one of my damn cowls on.

Actually, no I didn't notice. I was preoccupied trying to find your blinkers. I still can't find them.

It is perfectly legal in Texas to have no blinkers  [thumbsup] I've always hand signalled anyways.

Though, some frame plug LED's are on my short list

The bike looks great. Doesn't look dirty at all.

Let us know what the bike sounds like with those pods. Something I've wanted to do, but don't know if I can put up with the noise.

Thanks! I had an open box before, so I don't think the noise should be too much more.

1993-1999 headlight mounting 'ears' will have no holes for blinkers if you want to do that in the future...

Not knocking it man....just offering a suggestion!  [thumbsup]

Slick bike.  Totally digging the flat black swingarm.

A few thoughts on the rear brake light.  I think combining the rear splash guard and light mounting bracket would look really clean.  Have a parabolic shape extend where the guard ends with a curvature that matches and surrounds the light.  Sounds like a carbon fiber or fiberglass project.  Maybe put some mini turn signals where the frame end caps are.

Also, where's that Cafe cowl?!  [laugh]

Cafe racers don't have passenger pegs.  Truly hot chicks ride their own bikes.  ;D

What would really look cool is a cafe-style seat cowl!  There was a guy on here a year or so ago who said he was fabbing one.  He posted some sexy pics and then disappeared.   ???

Your bike looks awesome. [thumbsup] Nice and minimalist. I'm not 100% on the tail light but it's unique so kudos for that too.

Those bars are so low, you're gonna need a chiropractor's number for sure!

It's actually not that bad. Of course I got used to my 996, which was a rack

That bike looks damn good.  What kind of clip ons are those?  Any trouble fitting the coffins on the bars?

Uh, and no! I didn't watch the entire Right Said Fred video.  Well maybe, but I am at work.  That has to justify a little.

Those look sweet. Mine isn't all that bright, but it does have a small clear "window" at the bottom that shines light on the license plate. I'm sure the hella unit is crazy bright. I used to have their reflectors on my offroad rig. I used to scare the shit out of people  [evil]

Thanks! The clip ons are Woodcraft. They're really easy to install but you have to lower the headlight to get them to fit properly. Which is a must anyways after you put clip ons on. Otherwise the bike looks really funky.

as another person rocking pods and no exhaust i will say that the pods are pretty impressively loud.  at highway speeds i hear the intake noise over the exhaust and my friends say they can hear it when theyre beside me in a car.  it is louder than the open airbox, but nothing too bad.

Hey El MataCheapos
did you see the thread on the guys from Spain? they have a sweet tail light on their Cafe.
They supposedly sell products. They have cafe-ish turn signals too on their catalog
. But they are on the otherside of the planet and have no linkies.

Nice.

Most monsters that are supposed to be Cafe racer styled look pretty far from it.

But yours is good. needs the cowl tho  ;D

(there should be a shit stirring smiley)

a bullet headlight with the gauges in the top would match the look too.

Saw this thread, thought "wow, that bike looks amazing (sans the bird shit)! How can I make mine look more like that?"
Then it struck me: I have those exact same mirrors only they face up instead of down! I set about making the corrections then proceeded to enjoy my nightly ride-about-town with my view in both mirrors completely eclipsed by my gloved hands.
Now, maybe it's a skill thing. Maybe it's the fact that I've only riding just three weeks but I have decided to put the back in the upright position for the time being despite how shabby it looks in comparison. Is there a trick to it? You can tell me, you won't hurt my feelings.

Well maybe a little... :'(

That's pretty odd. I can see the mirrors just fine. Try playing around with some of the angles to see if you can get it to work for you.
