Title: Upate the Crash Ticker Mostrobelle =(
Post by: ROBsS4R on May 07, 2009, 12:42:02 AM
Well I am no longer a crash virgin. After 35k of miles I had my first crash a few hours ago.

I was taking the CA-237 E on ramp towards Milpitas. See Map below.

There was a bus in front of me so I could not be going more than 15 to 20mph. This is a strange turn. I have taken this turn dozens of times before. I made my first turn in then straightened out and as I made my second turn in my front tire washed out on me. My basket blew up so I could not ride out of there. Dan the Man saved me once again  [thumbsup]

Dan and I dropped the bike of at Nichols. After looking at the bike in he parking lot it appears that I hit a patch of oil. There is oil residue on the side of the tire that washed out and in the treads. Also I notice I have some oil on my Pants as well.

I wont post up pics of the gear since the damage is hardly anything to mention. I got some minor frictions burns from the gear and I am sure I will be a little sore later today.

The frame sliders took the brunt of the crash. I need a new bar end, rear break lever and clutch basket. Minor scratch on the tank.

I am replaying the crash in my head since I am trying to figure out what I could have done differently if anything at all =(

Sorry to hear about this! It's hard to imagine what you could've done different because that seems like an odd place for a patch of oil to appear  ???  Usually oil is most visible at stoplights and can be avoided. Do you think this could've happened because it was dark out and you couldn't see the oil?

At least you're ok and that's the most important part  [thumbsup]  Good luck on getting the bike fixed fast, and hopefully its not too costly.

Sorry, dude! Glad to hear you came out rather unscathed. That's pretty impressive mileage before losing your virginity, though! I lost mine the 3rd day of owning my vintage scooter. I think I eeked out 2 miles on it. :'(

Bummer!
 :(

Well I'm glad you're ok! Hopefully not too sore today.
Take it easy!
Cheers!

Damn Rob, sorry to hear that, but like everyone else, I'm glad you're OK and the bike isn't too bad.

From the map it looks like a very weird little oval/decreasing radius turn, so you were probably thinking about that more than the surface. Plus you said you were behind a bus, so you were prolly in the gunk before you'd have had enough time to react.

Kudos to Dan for the roadside assist - he must be trying to make up for his dirtbike karma!  ;D

Ouch! Glad you're OK.

I may have some stock bar-ends. Let me know if you need 'em.

I'm just happy to hear that you are ok Rob.
Bikes can be fixed quickly you can't.

Scary place to go down...At least on a mountain road you might not have a car in the vicinity.  On the freeway you're almost guaranteed to.  We had a good streak there, folks.  Glad everyone is OK.   [thumbsup]

Rob,

Doesn't sound too bad.  Hope you get back up and riding sooner than later.

Ciao!

Bummer, Rob.  Glad you're okay.  I've got some stock S4R bar ends as well, but I robbed them of the spacers that go onto the threads.  They're yours if you want 'em.

Hey Rob , just glad your OK. Looking at the front tire last night definitely looked as if he ran through some oil. There was some residue still left on the tire. I want to swing back by there today and see whats there, maybe morning commute cleaned it all up.

Kudos to Dan for the roadside assist - he must be trying to make up for his dirtbike karma!  ;D

LOL, i didn't mention it in the CR thread, but my buddy crashed there too  [laugh] So I'm still batting 1.000. I don't think anyone is going to ride with me.... :-\

Oh not fair.  Glad you're ok though.
Now is your chance to have a talk with Cal Trans about their oil-slicks.

Good thing you got your allotted crash out of the way in good company.
I'm starting to understand why DTM wants to join the EMT,
sounds like it would be better for all of us ! [laugh]

Glad  you are not too serious hurt and hope the bike will not too much cash for parts replacement
It happens almost to every rider to use dark time for comute , oil ...rock .

Glad you're ok, mang.  35k without a crash is damn good.

I know riders are supposed to be supermen, and are expected to perceive every danger before they hit it, but sometimes shit happens.  Oil is one of those "shit happens" things.  Good to hear that neither you or the bike are FUBAR'd.

Was it just the hub and springs?

Yeah basically =) My friend says there are clutch sliders. I never heard of those  ???

So I still need a Clutch Cover, one Bar end maybe a Break lever. PM me if you guys have some stock parts laying around. Does anyone know who can touch up the paint on the tank. No Ducati Dent just scratched up a little.

Also I think I forgot my Rizoma Mirror in your Truck and I have your lock to return so let me know where I can drop that off to you.

Robert =)

Sucks, man.

Glad you're unhurt and that the bike is likely fixeable.

Take care.

Oil is one of the many hazards out there that we have little control over. I am glad you made it through ok.

You know, if you ran an open clutch cover, the springs would've just hit first, bouncing off the pavement and standing the bike upright for you, thus resulting in no damage. You should consider it.

Heh

I am convinced that if the stock clutch cover was on the bike I would have been able to ride out of there. I bought the bike like that and the bling was nice but going forward I am just getting a metal cover

Just stop dropping it on the ground.  Problem solved.   [cheeky]

Hey, you walked away from the accident and only had a couple hundred bucks in repairs?!  Hell, most of my maintenance bills are more than that.  And I have a lot of maintenance bills.   :-X

Sounds like you got off lightly. whew!

As I typed that I realize there are all sorts of possible meanings, but let's not go there this early in the morning....  :-X

Relieved to hear it wasn't worse. I know that exact ramp, as I take it whenever I'm riding down to Nichol's. It's a strange one, and no doubt has oil similar to a toll booth as inattentive drivers brake hard at the second curve and then hit the gas to get back up speed for the merge. [stoopid drivers...  >:(]

Say hi to duqette (my red M750) at Nichol's!  :) They're the best.  [thumbsup]

I got the bike back today.

I put 60 miles on it on the way home today and it feels better than it did before the accident.

Thank you all for the kind words.

If anyone has a cheap Clutch Cover for sale let me know.

Thanks
Robert

Glad to hear it is back, better than before. Now remember, shiny side goes UP, greasy side stays DOWN.  ;D
