Title: 2006 S4R Tacho problem!!!
Post by: Starky on May 11, 2009, 01:26:12 PM
Does anybody now how to fix a broken down rev counter, mine just gave up.... it still works but at idle the needle falls down to the bottom and after every ride it hangs on a different position. It still works but i do not have a clue at what RPM.... [bang] Do i need to replace the whole dashboard unit or is there an other way to fix this... ???

Tach?  What's that for?   ;D  I just use my years and butt tach.

But - you might well be looking at replacing the whole gauge board and dealing with the associated hassles.  I went retro a couple years back to a pre electronic dash Monster.. so I've tuned out some of the detailed discussions on similar issues.  But I bet someone will come along be a better insight for you.

it kind of sounds like the needle got stuck as it went up the dial and hits up against the retention clip for the dial face.
when you turn on the ignition, does the needle sweep all the way smoothly, or does it get snagged/stop halfway up or something?
If it doesn't go all the way to the end of the dial, then I guarantee you the needle is rubbing the clip. easy fix, but you'll have to play with it a bit.

It actually goes all the way smoothly, after every ride I make it just seems to have an different starting point  :P There also seems to be something rattling inside the casing...Does anybody know if it is possible to replace the tacho only, or do I need to replace the whole unit ???

the 2007 worksop manual says:

The instrument panel is supplied as a single component; its internal components cannot be renewed separately

Had the same trouble on my 06 S2R 800.  Had to open it up a few times, but works fine now for me.
