Title: Broken Gauge Bolt - Help!
Post by: jagstang on May 12, 2009, 06:27:26 AM
So I was adjusting my clip-ons and trying some new routing for the wires and lines last night.  When I went to bolt the gauge cluster back down, the rubber section of the bolt between the gauge and the triple cracked off completely.  It looks as though it had dry rotted.  So now the lower section is screwed tightly into the triple and the upper section is still stuck in the gauge cluster.  How would you guys recommend removing both pieces?  I can't supply pics right now, maybe later this evening.  I'm going to call my dealer today to see if he has a replacement bolt (probably doesn't), but I really need to get the broken on out of there! >:(

Thanks!

There's a metal plate on each end of the rubber center section, and they are welded to the threaded stud on each end.

You can grab them with pliers or a vice-grip, and get 'em loose.

Might want to try some penetrating oil too, I use PB-Blaster.

Install the new one(s) with some anti-seize.

I'm guessing I'll need to slice off the rubber parts to get to the studs then.  Any good place to find a replacement part besides my dealer?  I noticed BikeBandit doesn't do Ducati anymore.

Slicing off the rubber will help to get at the plate.

Dealer's going to be the easiest, and you'll know that they will fit.

Here's one that *may* work, the company has several different rubber hardnesses:
Enterprise Rubber Inc. (http://enterprise.thomasnet.com/item/vibration-isolation-mounts-1005/vibration-mounts-male-male-1062/s3-138138-p30?&plpver=1002&origin=advsrch&by=prod&filter=0)

Bolts received, now it's just a matter of extracting the broken ones, especially from the triple.  There's not really anything to grab with a wrench, since it's almost flush with the triple w/o the rubber portion.

If you want to just replace the triple, I have one that will fit.  $25 plus shipping and its yours. (If you can't get the old hardware out).

I'm going to try and bend up the flange part to get a grip on it.  If I end up ruining my triple, I'll know who to call.
