Title: Street Legal (80db) vs Race (102db) Zards
Post by: lundy24 on May 13, 2009, 03:10:27 PM
It looks like there are two versions of this exhaust system. Does anyone have experience with the 80db system?

I've talked to someone selling the 80db version and they claim the only difference is a removable baffle. But I'm skeptical because Annitori Distributing, who I think is the distributor for Zard America, says the 80 db version has more differences with the 102 db system than just a removable baffle. They don't import the street legal version because no one in the U.S. wants to pay $1400 for a system that's no louder than stock.

There is a pretty big price difference between the 80db and the 102db systems, so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on the differences.

Interesting that you list the 102db as Race. Don't a lot of tracks require you to put stock pipes on for noise pollution? I don't know. I've never done. It's just what I've been told.

Not "a lot" of tracks.  Just some notable ones, like Laguna in particular.  Sorry to steer this off-topic.  I have no experience with the 80 db systems.

I WISH I could comment on the 102 db system.  I ordered one 7 weeks ago through Moto Wheels.  I called them this morning and still say nothing has come in to them.

Bought my bike with custom shorty pipes behind the cat-box.  Basically open-udder with no ECU changes.  Added the FatDuc and once dialed in she's running fine(r).  I want silencers to keep the  [leo] off my butt.

So my experience to date is:

+1 on FatDuc.  Every late-model monster should have one.

-1 on Zard for offering a product they can't deliver in reasonable time.
-1 on Moto Wheels for billing me full price on a product they can't deliver (should be a deposit).
-1 on Moto Wheels for not furnishing an invoice for the billing.
-1 on Moto Wheels for being shifty & elusive.  I understand if you don't have it but at least come clean!

Yes that's a -4 on the exhaust system.  If your looking for something to put on your ride during the upcoming winter you may be doing fine.  Otherwise be carefull.  If the dealer doesn't have your system in stock you may want to research other options.

PS Sorry for trashing a DMF sponsor but is what is.  They have not been responsive, kind, or honest with me.

Hmmmmm.....I dunno...I emailed Matt at Motowheels asking about a blue Oberon pressure plate. He told me upfront he didn't have them in stock and if he ordered, it would take weeks for it to get here. Perhaps a mis-communication somewhere?

The 102db Zards are worth the wait, I had them on my S2R 800 and now the S4Rs and could not be happier with the deep sound. I am surprised with your comments about MotoWheels...nothing but good to say from my experiences.

Hey Piralo,

Nice lookin' tail!  That's pretty much the look I'm going for.

Question:  Any ECU changes with the Zard?  How hot does the CF get?  Particularly any problems getting the key in & the seat open?  I carry a cable to slip through my jacket & hat to lock them to the bike.

Yes...I had to upgrade to the DP racing ECU and then went with the PC III and custom map. If you have an O2 sensor on your bike the Zards may give you trouble, if you do not it may run a little lean. The heat is minimal on the CF cans. Good luck, Mark

If you are just worried about the lean condition in closed-loop, I can't think of anyone not happy with a FatDuc. The more you open up your bike (cans, midpipe, airbox/pods) the more you are going to need to get the lean condition addressed.

Check out the sticky on closed-loop mods for all the info.
