Title: custom route maps
Post by: DarkDucati on May 14, 2009, 10:56:35 AM
Anyone care to share some tips on custom map creation like this one posted in another thread?
http://tinyurl.com/BayLoop (http://tinyurl.com/BayLoop)

I've poked around for a while now and each time I try to customize a map using the driving directions and A and B start/stop points, it's impossible to get all the destination points I want.  Is there a limit?

Any tips appreciated.  I'm trying to make a custom map for a trip that goes all back roads from east bay to donner lake, around lake tahoe, and out towards Utah.

You can drag the blue line to create the route you want. Click and drag the line at numerous points on the map and it puts those little white circles in.

Alternatively, you can also right click on roads and select "Add Destination" and google will create the route. Clicking and dragging the line will probably be more custom to what you want.

Once you've done all that dragging, be sure to click the "Save to My Maps" link at the bottom of the left hand frame

Thanks everyone for the quick help.

That's exactly what I've been doing, dragging, adding destination points, but for some reason when I try to save it, it times out every time, and I was thinking there may be a limit to the number of points I'm creating.  I'll try breaking it down even smaller.

I even tried doing some tricks with importing it as a KML file, but it still chokes on it.

Maybe I should try eating bacon while I'm doing it.

There's a link in the top right labeled "Link". If you click on it and grab the whole URL, it's another method of saving the route. You can take that URL to tinyurl.com and convert it into something more friendly.

Going to have a party by the lake?

Thanks I'll give that a try as well.

Hadn't planned on a party, but if anyone is near by... [thumbsup]
A buddy of mine from Sacto (ST2 rider) are going up end of May.  I have a place on Donner lake, so that makes for a good place to stop on day one, do some local food and riding, then day two is out and around Lake Tahoe, and depending on where we stay for night 2, maybe out towards Utah or some other good roads, then back the same way home.   Hmm, maybe a Ducati in the Sierra in the making?

Be aware that Google Maps seems to have a limit to the number of points you can include to force it to use the roads you want.  I didn't have enough available to get the last few roads onto my new and improved map:

Yep, that's basically the problem I ran into.  Going to try two maps instead.
