Title: Mother's Bike Comes Back to Life (Now JBubble's bike has a mystery)
Post by: jdubbs32584 on May 15, 2009, 07:55:05 PM
So after dumping Mother's bike in a gravel driveway back in October, its been sitting in the garage taken apart to be painted. He finished rebondo-ing (is that even a word) a horrible original bondo job on the tank and spray canned it a really nice matte silver (imagine a darker silver than whats on the silver S4R) this weekend. At some point, when we can afford it, a new tank will be professionally painted, so don't give me any crap about whats on there now  [cheeky].

We wanted to get him back up and running this weekend since the weather here in Oregon is finally turning and he won't ride cupcake on my S2R. Here are some pics:

Parts and pieces and putting on pipes

Front fender

Belly pan
(http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs045.snc1/4415_547608301483_7202497_32737801_8244660_n.jpg)

Putting on the tank (note: the rubber gasket thingie that goes on the hole at the top of the tank was surprisingly easy to put on with four hands instead of just two)

All done
(http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs045.snc1/4415_547608975133_7202497_32737826_283371_n.jpg)

Like I said, none of this was by any means a professional job. It was just something to get the bike going so we could ride together. Tomorrow we'll be making sure the tank is hooked up correctly, putting fuel in, and starting it up.

Shhhhh...don't make mention of the battery.  ;)

Its more than likely dead. We'll jump off my Audi and if it holds, we'll ride. If not, I'll grab a battery on Monday for him.  [thumbsup]

That is disappointing. :P

One day, I will get him on the back of my bike. And get a picture.  ;D

congrats on getting it back together.
Hope ya'll have a great ride tomorrow.

Thanks!

Now back to my wine and cookies.  [wine]

Oh, and the color is called Cast Iron (inventive isn't it?).  I believe the paint is for engine blocks or something but I'm not sure. I'll ask once he's less grumpy and has had breakfast.

So last summer I had some very...(can't find the right word) offers to paint my bike

I was highly flattered and appreciated them

but

with the amount of damage to some of the body parts

I just couldn't have somebody do all that work and not get paid appropriately for them

so i learned how to strip paint, sand, and do bondo

First off, the quick dry bondo that you mix yourself is not the ideal stuff to use

it sets up too fast and that causes pitting while spreading

also after i was done the nice folks at the fire house who have body experience explained feathering to me...bastards

So the job is not to be inspected at any range closer than 25 feet and no camera with a higher pixel count than 1.5 is to be used

The color is Cast Iron Grey, I love it, it flatens out nicely and has a teeny bit of metal flake in it

and it is fuel resistant and retouches without any indication of being resprayed

it is the ultimate ratbike paint

I forgot that part

I literally went over to the charger to plug it in and then we left

I think I did it in my brain but forgot to make my limbs move

Well, in the process of moving batteries around between bikes, we discovered I have a Gerbings heating thingie attachment that my dealer didn't tell me about and I was too stupid to notice.

Also noticed that my ECU doesn't appear to be a DP ECU, which my dealer told me I had since I had the Half Termi Kit (I have the cans and an open airbox for sure though the airbox looks a little homemade...).

If I get some pics, can someone help me out?

ETA: The little sticker on the ECU thingie says: 96516105B. There's a barcode with letters and numbers as well and another sticker thats labeled 2219pz10.

I did that when it was in my shop, so I don't inadvertently swap folks' batteries.
