Title: Speedo & Tach problems, please help.
Post by: DucDodgers on May 17, 2009, 08:09:49 PM
I've tried searching for a solution but didn't find anything so please excuse me if this topic has been reviewed.
I have a '03 620 which has developed a problem with the speedo and tach. Here are the details:
Recently my speedo needle and tach needle have stopped working. The needles do not sweep on the start up or do not move when the bike is rev'ed or ridden and the backlight does not work. But the digital odometer is working and clicks off the miles as I ride and the temp gauge works fine. I've check to make sure that the unit is clipped in properly and I checked the fuses and they all seem to be fine (well they look fine, I didn't replace any them). I tried looking for a loose connection or something obivious but I can't find anything wrong. Any ideas?

The gauges on those bikes were prone to allowing water in and corroding them to worthlessness.

If your bike still runs...you can remove the circuit board and relocate it so the immobilizer will allow the bike to start and replace with any gauges you like.

Duck-Stew has done it as have some other members.

at this point, I don't think there would be any harm in taking the gauges apart to have a looksie. has the bike been dropped or anything?  it's possible something jarred loose inside (although its a circuit board and unlikely). ducpainter or duck-stew may know better here, but perhaps you can transplant your immobilizer ECU to another gauge.

Thanks for the tips. The guages don't look as if they have any water damage but I guess it could be behind the surface. My baby is a New Yorker Monster with 10k so she has seen the asphalt a couple of time, something might have jarred loose. I was hoping for a simple fix since times became super tight for me and I wanted to avoid any expensive fixes. I'm just worried that if I take the gauges apart I may mess with the immobilizer and I would be worse off. I'm not very mechanically inclined, I've always been better at taking things apart then pitting them back together. I guess I'll do alittle more tinkering before give Dave at Chronic a call. Any more suggestions just keep'm coming, as well as advice on opening the gauges (wihout using a hammer).
Thanks again, I don't post often but I'm a super lurker, I've been reading the board almost daily, mostly on my iPhone at work, since TOB.

really weird. you might have a bent connector pin or one of the wires were severed on your harness.

have you checked the right fuses closely see if any are blown?

I currently have my own gauges apart ('02 620) and am in the middle of some significant upgrades that have been keeping my bike on stands so I could look at it if you wanna swing by (I'm in Nassau county).

Thanks for the offer to take a look at it, my brother is a  [leo] in Nassau county and I ride up there every now and then. If I can't get this sorted by the weekend I might take you up on your offer but I will have to pay you in  [bacon] &  [drink]
I opened the gauges and they don't have any water damage, as a matter of fact they were bone dry. Nothing was loose (before I started pulling things apart). I'm convinced it has to be a wire in the harness. I connected the circuit board and started the bike up. The LED's around the tach light up but the ones around the speedo don't. The speedo and tach don't sweep even without the needles so it's not the needles being stuck it has to be an electrical problem.  I'll keep tinkering but if anyone can give any inputs I would appreciate it.

hmmm. I would double check fuse 36 that's the fuse for the instrument cluster. the fact that half your gauges light up makes me think that you might have a cracked board or that one of the solders on the board broke from the bike falling over.
