Title: Lexus SC400
Post by: ZLTFUL on May 18, 2009, 01:21:34 PM
So, any opinions?

I have an opportunity to buy a 93 with low miles and in incredible shape for $4000...

It's got a pretty stout and reliable engine from what I've heard...

Long time ago before I worked for Porsche I worked for Lexus. Good cars but if something breaks it can get real expensive real fast. Air conditioning comes to mind. An AC compressor is 1200 bucks just for the part. They can be money pits when they break.

That seems to be my only sticking point...I know the owner and that the car was babied its entire life...

Of course there is the 1999 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro with 76k for $4500...

Really fun if you stuff a twin turbo supra motor in them.  [thumbsup]

those are actually pretty good.

biggest problem you'll run into will be leaking camshaft, and camshaft adjuster seals.

have it done with the timing belt. probably run you about $1500, but, you'll only have to do it every 100k miles.

might need a ABS control module too, but you can get them reman for a hell of lot less, or $600 new.

the turbo ones were a little more problematic and way more picky, but the 2.8 was a tank. I have a customer who smashed the oil pan open on his, then drove 2 miles down the road with little to no oil. I was hoping it was engine time, nope, cam tensioner made noise for about 2 minuets, but nothing after that, no metal in the oil, no nothing.

Back in the 90's, they built cars much more solid than than the "Lexi" of today.
