Title: The where should I eat dinner/lunch thread (Austin to SA, TX edition)
Post by: Le Pirate on May 20, 2009, 09:52:06 AM
Tomorrow, I'm going to be driving from the far north of TX tomorrow to Austin, then San Antonio, then back all the way up to the OK border (isn't work fun...16-17 hour days  [roll]). I thought it would be fun to get some local dinner recomendations.

my only requirements are:

1. not too far off my given route (I'll be traveling up and down I-35...and 37 in SA). I'm in a rather large truck  (f-350) w/ 250-500 gal. tank on the back to be navigating too much city traffic...but if it's really good food, I'll sit in stop lights a little.

2. a place I won't look too funny eating alone  [laugh]

3. I'm a state employee, so keep that in mind budget wise  [cheeky]

I'll eat anything, so give me your best  [thumbsup]

oh...and directions, or atleast an address to punch in the GPS

15-20 minutes out of your way: The Grist Mill, Gruene, TX. Roast tenderloin is incredible. Nice deck with a view of the river. NO traffic  ;D

+1  on Grist Mill.  Any Bill Millers BBQ in San Antonio is a cheap but good stop.  Don't really know whats on that side of town.

Any chance near Amarillo?

A friend swears by the Big Texan Steak Ranch (http://www.bigtexan.com/).
Not sure if because of getting his name on the wall in eating their 72 oz steak.  :o

Going the other way. I pass by there when I have to go to Amarillo, though. Make that trip pretty often. Eating 72 oz. of steak, then driving 4 hours home just doesn't ever seem like a good idea to me though  [puke] [laugh]

It'll probably be closer to dinner time...I think I'll get there around 1...unload part of my fish at walter E. Long lake, take off for SA....meet another crew and give them the rest at lake braunig...Think I'll meet them around 3...should take about an hour to transfer their fish over, and dump the rest. Then I have to stop in San Marcos and pick up some equipment.

Think I'll be free sometime around dinner time. If your free for dinner I'm all for meeting up...that goes for anyone. I just can't drink any  [drink]....state truck.

Cool! Even better. I only have a few minutes for lunch. I'll go in earlier tomorrow for work, go to gym and then meet you. Too bad it wasn't tonight. The weekly meetup is at Mings.

Depending on where you are in Austin I would highly recommend Threadgill's - homestyle food that is not expensive, and hits the spot after a long day.  There is one just south of the river and one further north on Lamar.

While you are in San Mar don't forget to stop (or at least drive slowly) by Sewell Park at Aquarena and Sessoms - excellent scenery  ;)

hopefully around 5-6....that is my plan at least....it could be earlier, if everything goes well

I might end up not driving all the way back....staying at a hotel somewhere, or driving back to waco and staying there (my parents live there)

Took a couple days to get back on here....

Thanks for meeting up with me IZ...had a great time!

I've had a couple days to think up some interesting and funny way of making fun of how short he is, but in the end...I decided it'd be best if I didn't say anything about his ankle bitter stature  ;D

no...no...seriously, IZ is a great guy and I hope you all have a chance to meet him in person.

And the way he moves around, I'm sure you all will!
