Title: Help! Tie Rod Broken - `07 m695
Post by: deo.888 on May 20, 2009, 02:09:45 PM
I live in NYC, the land of potholes.  I was riding up Allen St. after work yesterday and the rear tie rod snapped at the top part after hitting a less than threatening pothole. I heard a snap, the tail on my bike dropped, my exhaust pipe scrapped the ground.

I need to replace the tie rod, but would like to know which tie rods can fit my `07 M695.  This would allow me to have a greater chance of buying a used part from another model monster. Also, if anyone can recommend an aftermarket tie rod.

Thanks for the help.

What is this "tie rod" of which you speak???
My 620 rear suspension is held up by the shock absorber.

i assume he is referring to the linkage rod with the two spherical bearings that links the swingarm to the rocker, often called the ride height adjustment rod on other bike with adjustable ride height.

i believe any rod from any monster '02 and newer will work, im sure someone else can confirm this.

Deo post up in the NYMMC forum with this issue.  There are cases were the city will reimburse you for damage to a vehicle caused by potholes.  A couple of the NYMMC members are very knowledgeable in this area.

If the pot hole has been reported ? hours or days before the incident, the city is liable.  Here is a link for the form:
http://www.comptroller.nyc.gov/bureaus/bla/auto_damage_claim.pdf (http://www.comptroller.nyc.gov/bureaus/bla/auto_damage_claim.pdf)

It will be many months before the city decides if you are eligible, so you will want to pay now and hope to be reimbursed.

Thanks for the responses everyone.  The internet at my apt stopped working for a few days and my work recently blocked access to many websites, so I have been neglecting my post.

If Ducati won't replace it under warranty (still good until 8/19/09) I will try seeking reimbursement through other means.  I never knew that NYC would reimburse money for damage caused by potholes!!  I will find out tomorrow if Ducati will help me out or if the guy at Ducati will give me his old rear tie rod from his 695.  If both options fail, I'll make sure to send you guys a pm for your extra tie rod.

Once again thanks.

In the meantime check out some pics of my new lowrider.

Surprise, I never heard back from Ducati SoHo, so I have decided to take things into my own hands.  I figure I can roll my bike to the local bike place and have them do it for me, which the owner already told me it would take at least 2 hours ($85/hr)!! or I can buy some tools and do it myself.  Anyone know how long it should take to replace the tie rod? It seems like if you have a decent set up you can do it in an hour.

I received a m695 tie rod today in the mail and want to install it tomorrow.  I have a general idea in how to do the job and just need to buy the tools tomorrow.  I am definitely not a mechanic, but am mechanically inclined. I used to have a 2002 WRX, which I installed the turbo, up pipe, turbo-back exhaust, fuel injectors etc. I don't think this job is outside my capabilities, but if anyone can give some advice it would be excellent.

I'm using this as a guide. [www.ducatimonster.org/faq/faq_adjustable_height.pdf]

Does it seem OK?

Mine snapped on a nasty pothole on the on-ramp to the Lincoln Tunnel, Jersey side.  Warranty doesn't cover road hazard, as I found out when I tried to get Marcos at Soho to do the same.  You might be able to file an insurance claim, or just wait for NYC to reimburse you.

I'm sorry to hear that there are others out there like me who have to deal with this sort of annoyance.  Did you need to file a police report to get reimbursement from NYC? How long did it take for them to process your claim?

When you get the new rod, and if you are taller than 5'-8", get the adjustable one. I used to have a M620 and changing to the adjustable rod made a huge difference to how the bike rode. Also, the tail can be lifter about and inch higher and makes the bike look much better. That is the first thing I did to my s2r 1000 when I bought it.

The City paid for two wheels and tires on my wife's car about four years ago.  They weren't speedy, but they did pay.  No police report filed.  You will not collect if the pot hole was not previously reported.

Certain time constraints have pushed me to take my moto to the local garage, Moto Grrl, and have them do the work.

One thing I noticed from the tie rod that I ordered online, it's 272mm long, eye-to-eye.  The guy I bought it from told me he took it off of a M695, but isn't the one from the M695 only 267mm?  Can anyone confirm this?  Is it going to be an issue to install the 272mm tie rod on the M695?  The mechanic at Moto Grrl expressed concern that it was too long.  I know the part has a part number on it, but I only managed to think of referencing the part number now - at a time when I already dropped off the bike... [bang]

It'll fit, if the rose joint hole diameter and width is the same, but the 5mm difference will probably raise the rear ride height by over 1/2".
Okay if you want quicker steering, not okay if you are vertically challenged.
You'll find a lot of monsterers (including me) like to have the rod up to 10 mm longer than standard to get that quicker steering.

My M695 link was 272mm eye-to-eye.  I just looked for my original one to physically confirm, but I couldn't find it.  However, prior to installing an adjustable link I set it to the standard length and took a pic against a ruler...272mm.  I think you have the correct length link.

Also, the link in your pic on p1 looks like an aftermarket adjustable version, not the stock non-adjustable piece from an M695.  No way Ducati will help out with that.
