Title: Bent and cracked front rim
Post by: RC Fan on May 22, 2009, 10:55:57 AM
Hello!

Should hitting a pothole result in a bent and cracked rim?  It was my first ride on my '09 696.  I was doing about 60 kms/h.  I have hit the occasional pothole previously with my '07 Bandit 650 with no issues.  Are the Marchesini rims known for this?  Thanks in advance for your advice.

I think it also depends on the type of tyre on it as well. I would be surprised if many wheels survive a relatively high speed encounter with a good-sized pothole.

It is the stock tire for the bike, whatever it is.  Sometimes you have to hit the pothole, so I guess I was surprised.

Sorry to hear about your rim.  That sucks.

The damage is not because of the Marchesini rims or even something Ducati-specific (though it would be different if you used to have front forks with a whole lot of suspension travel).  Some potholes will bend and/or crack a motorcycle rim.  It's a crapshoot when it happens.

OK, thanks.  I feel slightly less idiotic now.

Check your local and state laws.  The government might be responsible.

FYI-- In CA, it's Govt. Code Section 830 and 835.  Most public entities (regardless of the state) have some sort of procedure where you can file a claim with the governmental entity.  If you go to your local government entity's website, they may have some information.  If not, call the department of public works or department of streets or department of transportation and ask if there is a procedure to make a claim.

OTOH, if you don't think taxpayers in your town should reimburse you for your rim, don't make a claim.

No, I definitely won't be making a claim to the province.

Hi RC Fan,

I am not sure where you live, but the "KMH" and the "province" leads me to believe that it is outside of the US.

If you do not feel like buying a new rim, you might like to look into a service like this one (see http://www.rc3d.fr/roues.htm (http://www.rc3d.fr/roues.htm))

Cheers, P

check you tire pressure too; if there too low the tire is prone to squish to the point of contact with the pothole; of course it also depends on the size & depth of the pothole ....

There are a number of service to fix motorcycle rims; theres on in New York that charges $50; plus shipping; worth doing some reserch .... heat and mild bending from what I hear ...

I'm in Van ... Greens rim repairs ... but I heari ts pricey .... 250?  Where U located? ... Cheers Dave  [moto]

what size is that tire?
i know my bike was spec'd to come with a 120/60...
a 60 series tire provides a bit less protection than the standard 70 series that most people use..

I do believe the 696 stock tire is a 120/60.
