Title: carrying a visor?
Post by: MAXdB on May 22, 2009, 02:12:02 PM
Has anyone thought up of a way to keep an extra visor with them without having to carry it in a backpack? ... btw I do not feel like changing to those weird helmets that have the flip down tinted visor under the clear visor... they look weird.

if your're skinny enough, you could tuck it in your jacket, by your hip... I've seen folk do it.

I always have a backpack on me anyway...

I never carry an extra visor but I do carry a pair of sunglasses with clear lenses - that way I ride with the tinted visor up and wear the clear lenses.

Funny that I never thought of that! Sometime I feel really stupid about my inability to notice the obvious. I do notice all of the trees though...

Sure.  I keep it in the left hard bag, wrapped in an old Shoei helmet bag so that it won't get scratched.  It's in there with the first aid kit, flat tire repair kit, reflective vest, Buff, cable lock, and a few other things that make my ST2 weigh an extra ten pounds or so.  ;D  [moto]

I dont know why I never though of just carrying it with me like a sling... that's a good idea.

I wonder how most riders can stand it when riding with visor down.  I almost never use mine except in dusty situation.  Even in rain, I leave it open as much as possible.  I always wear clear glass and keep the visor open.

My helmet does have the vent and all that but I just feel suffocated and besides I want to feel the wind.

My jacket has an inside pocket made to hold an extra visor. It wraps around your ribcage.

ditto, I just put around my rib cage under my jacket. Doesn't move, don't feel it.

that's funny you say that.. cuz I've felt the same way and even thought about ditching the full face for a half helmet but I'm not too sure about that since there have been one too many occasions where a half helmet would have left me with half a face..

I'm the opposite... even with sunglasses, I can't go faster than maybe 20 MPH without my eyes tearing and generally being uncomfortable.  My OGK helmet vents really well though.

Oh, visor is always up at stop lights and in slow traffic.

...to address the OP though, I have tinted tear-offs that work very well.  They take up almost no room when it's off in a pocket or pack.

Same here. +1

As for the OP, I will usually carry an extra visor with me when I have a backpack or tail bag. If I don't have a bag, I'll usually take a old pair of sunglasses with me to remove and stash in my jacket when the light gets too low.

I never needed to change out my visor during the course of a ride.  I use a tinted mirrored visor all the time even at night.
I know it isn't recommended to use a tinted visor at night, but where I ride at night has plenty of light from street lights and other sources, so I see everything just fine.... In fact, the tinted visor is actually more comfortable to my eyes as it keeps out the glare of headlights.
If anyone wants to argue with me, I'll tell them I see better through my dark visor at night than drivers on cell phones do during the day.

Only when I plan to ride at night on some back roads or dark canyon roads, which is rare,  will I switch to a clear visor and will do that before I leave my home.

If I have my clear visor on,  I keep a pair of sunglasses in my pocket/backpack  just in case.

If you're going to use logic like that, what is the point of arguing with you?  [roll]

What in the world do drivers using cell phones have to do with your ability to see road hazards through a tinted visor? ???

I have been stuck with only a dark visor once or twice after dark and want to avoid ever experiencing that again.  Even on well lighted roads it greatly reduces your ability to see potential hazards.  The last time it happened to me I rode the freeway home, so only had to keep in my lane and keep a proper distance from cars.  Riding on a two-lane road with no lighting would have been very, very dangerous.  The last mile or so between getting off of the freeway and being home were ridden with the tinted visor up.

I would strongly recommend against ever riding in the dark with a tinted visor if you can plan ahead and find a reasonable alternative.

I'd have to agree with scott.. even though you may feel you can see just fine, it's still a huge difference between a tinted visor and a clear visor at night. Even when driving a car with headlights on, if a person runs across the street in the one portion that isnt lit up by streetlight they are almost impossible to see until only a few feet away..

I ride without gear at night.  Cuz I'm more cautious on the bike without my leathers on.  In fact, most of the time I ride buck nekkid at night.  The chill keeps me alert.  Besides, it's safer than all those guys in 18 wheelers, jacked up on meth and doing 85 mph while getting road head from a 300 lb truck stop hooker.

I have a fieldsheer visor bag, which wraps around your ribcage. You hardly notice it and it is extremely useful for those rides you know you will drive at night. I always wear a dark visor but at night I can easily switch visors. It is great and it is only like $10.00

Check it at http://www.fieldsheer.com/site2009/ff/productspage/VisorBag.htm (http://www.fieldsheer.com/site2009/ff/productspage/VisorBag.htm)

Let me explain for those with slower minds.

My point is that I pay attention to what I'm doing and where I'm looking while looking through my tinted visor while people with cell phones aren't always paying attention.

If you can still see, then why not?

I  am able wear a tinted visor because I have decent night vision.  Just because many other people are blind at night, doesn't mean I am, so don't judge my opinions or what I do  just because I may have have better night vision than you.

You may have decent night vision, but that doesn't stop the fact that it's illegal in most places to wear a tinted visor after sundown. Same reason it's illegal to tint your entire windshield on a car...

Just a side note here about riding naked - Believe it or not, a few years ago as I am passing by downtown around bar closing time on a Saturday night, I passed a bunch of bicyclist butt - naked riding and screaming.   It was disgusting (they were only dudes) and admittedly funny as hell at the sametime..........  Don't do it....   [laugh]

You're not from Eugene, Oregon, by chance?

We saw this shocking sight (https://www.flickr.com/photos/calalily/3357313732/#) outside our house, in Eugene, a couple months ago.

I have what is basically a camera strap with velcro closure on the ends. Both my Arai and Scorpion visors have holes large enough to feed the strap through and close the velcro. It has a quick release snap and is easy to tighten so it is very convenient and pretty comfortable. I just strap it around my waist and it works much like the Fieldsheer bag, but it isn't a fanny pack!

I too have extremely good vision, both night and day alike.

So if I can still see, then why not?

B/c even though I can still see with a tinted visor at night, I can see much better with a clear shield.

I'm not gonna do anything to hurt my chances of seeing a car getting ready to pull out in front of me b/c some asshole's busy sending a text message while behind the wheel.

Do whatever you want to, but I'm not going to.

Do you wear sunglass while you're driving your cage at night?

I have 3 visors, dark, light tint, clear.

I use light tint for cloudy days, dusk, etc.  I use it most nights too.  If in the city I can see great.
Clear for night mtn rides is a must (a lot darker in the mtns at night).
Dark for sunny days where I know I'll be home in time.  Been caught a couple times with this and I can still see, but it about the same as riding at night in a good rain storm.

I highly suggest getting a light smoke, works wonders for sun, night, etc.

It's so weird to me to carry an extra visor, but then again I've never used a tinted visor so maybe someone could chime in on which they think is better:  visor up/clear visor and quality sunglasses vs. tinted visor.  I almost never get on the bike without a pair of sunglasses, plus I adjust my visor so frequently that a smoked visor wouldn't do that well in town anyway because I usually have it cocked about half way.  Sunglasses and clear visor.  It gets dark?  Sunglasses go in the pocket.

As far as air going around sunglasses, you should get a pair with the foam surrounds, they just have to fit well.

http://www.riderseye.com/ItemDetail.asp?c=Cat_Riding&Style=73 (http://www.riderseye.com/ItemDetail.asp?c=Cat_Riding&Style=73)

I've ridden 80mph with my visor up with no air leakage at all, yet they're comfortable to wear all day.  Just don't let your 5 month old puppy get ahold of them  >:(

Edit: ^^^^ someone could chime in on which they think is better for SUN PROTECTION :)

That works fine unless your sunglasses have polarized lenses, then it doesn't work very well at all.

Unfortunately, my prescription sunglasses are polarized (better for driving), so they don't work well with a clear visor.

Is there an "I'm an idiot" smiley?

I must have misread.  I used to buy good glasses for when I rode my bicycle a lot, but the expensive ones have a tendency to have less material in them (lighter) and therefore break more easily.  Now I just find the cheapest pair that still fits well.

Sometimes I wear my polarized Revos with a clear visor and haven't had any problems.  What problems do you experience with them?
