I've been uncharacteristically relaxed about having all my paperwork in order (although my insurance is always current). Every time I went out I was on the look out for [leo], I felt like I was riding around with a kilo of heroin taped to my chest. I had put off renewing my registration and the safety inspection was waiting for a left turn signal to get fixed. Took care of it all today and now I'm rolling legit [moto]. Now with current registration, safety inspection, insurance and my brother's [leo] courtesy shield I'm ready for any check point.
Now if I could only slow it down enough to shake this feeling of having heroin filled balloons stuffed up my . . .
Get your paperwork in order if you haven't already guys, happy motoring
where are you located? I would hate to have to worry about checkpoints
What about loud pipes? It seems like most people hereabouts talk about taking their baffles out.

I'm in NYC and although I've read some stuff about loud exhaust legislation I've never been approached about my exhaust (I did the hooker headers exhaust mod from TOB) and my bike is LOUD! It's an '03 620 but I get asked if its a 900 all the time.

Here in NYC they are stepping up "safety" check points. Last summer I got pull over 3 times and they checked all my paper work, one of the time the [leo] even gave me a safety inspection (my inspection was still valid) and went through my lights, signals, horn etc. . . He gave me a warning instead of a ticket (thanks to the courtesy shield) because I had my license plate on with velcro.
I drove past a check point on the opposite direction, [leo] stop traffic on the highway right by an exit and pulled over every [moto]. They had a flatbed truck with about a dozen bikes, if they pulled you over and your paper work wasn't in order you got towed. All you saw was people on the shoulder helmet in hand speaking into their cell phones (probably trying to get a ride home) while walking towards the exit ramp.
thats the cost of living in nyc. ive been stopped twice and got a ticket for no inspection sticker once. they didnt tow me because of a courtesy card.
What's a courtesy card/shield? Is that a badge? Am I to assume that cops let other cops go for the same sh_t that I get a $300 ticket for? That's bullsh_t.
I can see where this is heading. [roll]

It's even worse, cops let other cop's family and friends get off with a warning where they would otherwise give'em a ticket. It doesn't seem fair but I'm not complaining [roll]
I'ts called a PBA card, Police Benevolant Association, a charity for widows of fallen cops. I got one for being a EMT at 911. Immediate family get a shield to put in their car that's literally a get out of jail card.
IB4TL:
PBA card, etc. No such thing in CA. My favorite line is "Do you know Officer _____?". I always say, 'Yeah, I hate that guy." [laugh] Last girl that showed me her father in laws business card (Lieutenant) got a correctable violation turned into a non-correctable.
I will let anyone go that has a DMF sticker. 8)
Yea, we're in the meat of spring here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the road blocks are out. Went through two in the car in the last couple of days.
Last year this time I went through one and my MC permit was expired and I was charged $150, but got it reduced to $77. Every year I have to get my permit renewed as it is good for one year. I have gotten away with just a car license or had a MC permit for 39 years. This state required a MC license in 1970, but pulled the requirement and then reinstated it and went back and forth for the next couple of decades. I've had MC licensed in other states, but never in my home state.
If I could pass the drivers test my insurance would go down some too. ;D

What state are you in LA?
TNHP likes to put checkpoints around Deals' Gap ~

This barely seems like its legal, how can the fuzz just pull you over for no reason. This arent DUI check points. Do they have to announce to the public where these check points will be? Just seems like they are messing with [moto] for no reason. [bang] ???
I think in TN they have to be published in a local paper ~

Sunny/rainy South Carolina. [thumbsup] Far Northwestern corner off Hwy 28 about 25 mi. south of Highlands, NC and 15 mi. from the "WarWoman".

The squids situation gets a little out of hand during the summer here in NYC. Guys get bikes and ride with no insurance, moto lic., registration, etc. You have guys in high power sport bikes hauling major ass down streets and pulling wheelies and endo's. These guys get one bike and share it between 2 or more guys and more or less terrorize certain neighborhoods with ripping down side street WOT. My bro was hit by a bike ridden by a 16 yr old with no lic. I don't like or agree with check points but if they get some of these squids off the road then I can live getting pulled over in a check point or two.
Just down the hill from me. I'm in Waynesville, NC. I've hit that section of 28 before, nice stretch of road ~

Why don't you just take the MSF course? It's fun, you will learn something, and passing it exempts you from the DMV road test.
I can see why they put the checkpoints out there. There are some goobers out there screwing it up for everyone, and shows like Superbikes, while I agree it is a motorcycle show, and gives a bit of publicity to the bikes, also seems to focus on the gang aspect, with all the gang handsigns, the guys in Atlanta that say you need to go 120 mph for 20 miles to join their club (pretty smart, huh?), they guys that take over a whole 4 lanes of freeway, that sh_t makes up all look bad, even though we don't hang with the same people, to the guys doing their stunt stuff on the street. It doesn't help us a bit with PR with the 4 wheel crowd.

There are people who will claim a 4th amendment violation, but they've been doing it for a while. I've gotten stopped at one DUI checkpoint ever. Since I don't drive drunk, it didn't bother me. The guy stopping the car isn't the one ordering the checkpoint, so I didn't let him know my feelings on the constitutionality of such a stop.

You could let him know all you want. They have already been ruled to
not be in violation.
A common misconception regarding the 4th Amendment is that it protects you from ALL searches. If people would learn a little bit about their own Country they wouldn't have to walk around all pissed that their "rights" are being violated.
As for illegal searches and what not, "Anonymous citizen reported a motorcyclist/motorist was brandishing a firearm." They can do what they want then.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
The right was worded this way because of a British practice of random searches in Boston. The courts have upheld it, but the courts have also upheld separate as equal (Plessy), corporations as people with civil rights (Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific), etc.
I'm not saying checkpoints are unreasonable, but that they lack probable cause because they are not targeted toward specific individuals.

I agree that on their face these checkpoints violate the 4th amendment. But wiser minds have researched and contemplated the issue ad nauseam and they have upheld it numerous times (dozens) both in State and Federal Supreme courts. And the issue isn't probable cause, it's the word reasonable. The courts have deemed in the interest of public safety to allow the stops. They feel it's a minor inconvienance that benefits a greater good. If we would only quit finding drunk drivers during each and every one of them we could probably stop doing them.
You know it is funny.
A lot of people have them but only a few feel they need to brag about it.
