Title: Who has hit a bird or animal at speed?
Post by: DuciD03 on May 22, 2009, 10:29:45 PM
I was on a long sweeping off ramp doing about 100 km/h (60 mph) where 4 lanes merge into 2; light traffic, but a car was merging from the right so I moved to the left lane ... saw a little tan and gray sparrow swoop over the car; and then coming at me; I ducked but the little fella hit me in the upper chest; looking back in the mirror he was swirling in the backdraft on the road ... rip ... little fella ... I felt bad.  It didn't hurt at all; but did scare the crap outta me.

There must be some other stories out there; I recall hearing some bad accidents where a guy hit a turkey and knocked him out & off the bike ... other care to share ...

I have a pretty good story... but it wasn't on a Duc.

So, I was riding on my '84 Nighthawk 650 on a rural 2 lane highway in Minnesota in the summer.

I'm the only vehicle in sight, riding along at a leisurely 65 mph, and I see a sparrow ahead of me flying around.  It swoops down ever so gracefully, in the blink of an eye...

And completely IMPALES itself on my clutch lever!

I'm in utter shock.  The bird is sitting there, upside down, utterly dead, with my clutch lever sticking straight through its chest!

Since it was rather disgusting and I was not thinking clearly, I decided to try and speed up and hopefully the wind resistance would knock it off my lever and I could move on.  After I surpassed 100mph I realized that the sparrow evolved to not have any air resistance and so this was a stupid plan.

I slowed down and batted at the mangled bird with my hand... in a very scared and wussy way.

The force of my blow caused the entire torso of the bird to tear away, and all that was left was its ass and two little legs sticking up, stuck to my  clutch lever, traveling at 60 mph!!

After another swipe of the hand, the bird's ass fell off, and I wiped the blood and guts off my clutch lever... in shock as to the chances of the bird hitting my clutch at 65 mph.  I'm also glad it wasn't the brake lever or I may have been in a far worse situation!

That's a disgusting story, filterban. :-X

I was riding the 900 up a freeway on-ramp and a bird (a pidgeon or dove, I believe) jumped up to start flying and get out of my way. The bird ran square into my right hand. It didn't hurt, but it did startle me. I was only going 50-60mph at the time. The bird dropped down to the ground, not sure if it was killed or just stunned. No gore, fortunately.

Not a very interesting wildlife run-in story, I admit. Sort of hope I don't acquire any "interesting" stories. :P

Apparently Mother is pimping the evening news. What a tease.

You could at least say "details at eleven," and then wait a while to tell us the rest.

I smacked a blackbird with my throttle hand at highway speed once, killed the sh_t out of the bird and made my hand bleed a bit through my glove, which were fairly light summer gloves.

I took a crow to the upper left side of the chest at about 80mph. Big cloud of feathers, but did not see what happened to the rest of him. Pretty good thump, kind of set me up out of my normal crouch.

Not on my bike, but i once flew into a bunch of seagulls.  Most of them whizzed by, but one unlucky fella met his demise at the leading edge of my left wing.  I watched as his body wrapped around the front of my wing, with his entrails sliding towards the back.  Moments before touchdown, what remained of him was no longer being held up by wind-resistance, and he slid off the wing.

Once I drove just out of town speeding up when a young owl on the right just got started its last flight.
It started with a dive and tried to get some air when it suddenly turned left and crashed into me...
It flew off to the side and I stopped to check it out...
Seems it broke vital parts of its body and I couldn't help myself and took it home.
The poor bird died that night from it severe injuries...
My mother took it to the pet stuffer and since that day it sits proud with spread wings in our hallway.

Coming home from work one afternoon in my work van. I'm driving, an employee in the passenger seat, both front windows open. We stop at a light. Out of nowhere, a pigeon flies thru his window, straight across, and out my window past my face. Didn't hit anything.
Took me a minute to realize the light had changed . . .

I hit a squirrel with my front wheel doing about 85.  As I continued zipping down the road, my thoughts quickly went from "wow, I'm glad that didn't cause me to crash" to "wait...I felt a big thud under the front tire but nothing under the rear".  Then I started hearing this odd noise from the front area, kinda like sqeauling.   Crap, did something get damaged?  Wait, maybe the reason I didn't feel a second thud is because there's now a bloody rabid squirrel clawing his way up my forks and any second now he's going to leap out and have giant fangs and go zombie on me.   I freaked myself out pretty good, deserted Sierra road and alone, so I stopped.  No squirrel to be found, but there was a new big tear/hole in my exhaust wrap just back from my front wheel.  Guess he fell off before he got to my neck.  Whew.

I hit a blackbird at 60 this week, to my right arm.

Even though I had my Vanson textile jacket on and that bird probably only weighed but a few ounces, it smacked pretty hard and definitely got my attention.

Last Summer, I was riding a different bike.  Doing about 115 on a very long deserted straight away.  (West Texas, doesn't have a whole lot of anything but straight roads, and flat land).  When a large group of small brown birds darted out of the brush by the fence line and over me.  One particularly scared little fellow, shit on face.  Luckily the Visor was down.   I missed him by inches, ducked expecting to take a sparrow in the helmet, and when I looked up All I could see was bird shit.

Second story:   Years ago I was  doing about 120 in a squad car when I was struck by a sparrow.  Directly in front of my face.  I swear he had a little look of fear on his tiny bird face and was trying to back paddle with his wings. He imploded right before my eyes, it was like he turned inside out, and disappeared.  When I stopped all that was on the wind shield was a couple of feathers a trickle of blood and a little poop.  I don't know where the rest of him went, because it happened so fast.

Yea, in 1982, a great big friend of mine took a goose in the chest (yea, one of those big Canada Geese) at about 60 mph as it made a  vector across his path at some speed.  Damn near killed him.

I always thought his size helped.  At 325 lbs. he looked gaunt - big as they would let an a submarine at 6'8". Great big red cheeked bowl haircut, just like he'd stepped off the front of the Hansel and Gretel story book - just big.

He road a RT1000 Beemer.

In 2000, I bought my Triumph Sprint ST in LA, did 600 miles while I was working there so I could have the original dealer do the 600 mile service, then I flew back and picked it up and rode it to SLC.  Somewhere in the desert along Hwy 93, I'd hit the magic 1,000 mile mark so I could use all the revs (according to the Triumph break-in regimen)

I opened it up and was probably doing about 120 when something appeared in the road ahead.  As I got closer, it started moving and I rolled off the throttle a bit.  As you know, you cover a lot of ground at 100+ mph and before I knew it, this big-assed bird was going into take-off mode.  I think I was doing about 105 when I had to duck to avoid it.  Big Birds take a LONG TIME to get airborne.   ;D

Yeah, someone posted a link to an old thread on this board a few posts ago. I told my story there. I don't feel famous. [laugh] Just damn lucky and blessed. Just wasn't my time. Had I wadded up the bike right after impact or hit something solid like a tree or guard rail I would be dead... or at least paralyzed from the neck down. My head wasn't really attached. Some angel somewhere had control of that day. Damn sure wasn't me. Friends tell me it was the turkey's time not mine. Personally... I take it as a warning. [laugh]

A couple weeks ago I had a hawk fly out from the trees and damn near swoop right into my head.  I didn't hit it, but it had a squirrel or something which it dropped right in my path. Luckily, I was only going about 45 and was able to avoid it.  I guess we both had an "oh s@#$" moment at the same time.  It was more bizarre than scary.

on 5/1 I was out for a ride through the country side during midday.  Nice road, lots of twists not a whole lot of traffic, speed limit is 55.  Was probably 10 miles from town in the middle of a tree farm, and 3 deer came off a hillside, 2 doe and a buck.  The 2 doe were smart and stopped at the bottom, buck not so much, and crossed.  I hit him right in front of his rear legs and high sided (probably because I was unconsciously on the brakes, loading the front suspension).  Landed on my left shoulder and rolled for a while.  Had all my gear on so had a few roadrash marks.  Have an AC Joint tear in my left shoulder.  Other than that i'm fine, Duc is totaled though.  I hate deer.

Thanks! Yeah I'm definitely lucky considering the speed and nature of the accident.  They had to argue with me to get me to go to the hospital in an ambulance but I did, glad I did tho.  My jacket survived and definitely did its job, and seeing the marks on my helmet kinda freaks me out a bit.  I find myself noticing much more when I see guy out with no gear.  It bothers me,  I'd still be in the hospital with skin grafts if I wasn't wearing my gear.  I see guys with no helmet/gloves/jacket, and wearing shorts.  Dumb.  Now I gotta figure out what I want next, I'm a mechanic so I've been off work for a while.  I've been browsing around, Def want to stay naked.  Thinking Ducati SF or maybe Aprilia Tuono, or an S4RS if i can find one close enough. Decisions decisions.

Not very dramatic, I know, but last year I was riding along minding my own business when a squirrel started running across my path, and stopped. I was pretty happy about that, because I didn't need a furry speedbump, but then the lil bastard bolted out in front of me! All I felt was a little *bump* out of my rear tire... I'm glad Bullwinkle wasn't following him!

Last week was a bad week for me and wildlife on the road. 15+ years on a street bike and never had a critter try to take me out. Then last week I had two in two consecutive days. The first was a robin that thought he could obviously beat me across the tracks in heavy traffic. Came from my right rear and glanced off my headlight. I don't think he died immediately but I'm sure he got smooshed soon after. The second was the fattest groundhog I've ever seen. This bad boy came full throttle out of some long grass and ran right under my front tire. Braking didn't seem feasible with fuzznuts in the F-150 tailgating me. I simply got my weight back and cracked the throttle to lighten the front wheel a little to kinda loft over him. If years of freeride and downhill mountain biking has taught me anything, it is that if you can get your front wheel over an obstacle, the rear will almost always follow. Translates well to running groundhogs over on an S2R. The rear wheel simply mashed him flat right through the middle. I turned around to check out the damage and he was laying just like I left him. Deader than a doornail. I hope the size cycle breaks with him. I'm in no mood to plow a deer.

I was hit by a bird twice in the same day. The first bird was hit by a van driving in an opposing lane. I saw it about 30 meters in front of me. The bird bounced up in the air and it hit me in the hand on the way down. It hurt a bit. The second one was on 95 south between Baltimore and DC. I was doing the usual 80MPH for this section of HWY. The bird was just flying a bit low and got me in the face. It almost took me off of the bike. That thing rung my bell!
A few weeks later a friend of mine hit a bat and it got stuck in my frame.

I've hit a dog, a cat, and a bird on my monster...

The dog, a fat Boston terrier, was chasing me and ran right into my front tire - smacked it hard and tumbled a bit. no harm to either of us.

The cat, same owner as the dog! Ran out in front of me, it was really strange, the cat was hiding in the grass on the side of the road and like
a deranged, possessed demon animal - darted right under my front tire! I hit the binders hard but it was too late, ran him over and killed him. I had to take the cat up to the guy.
I felt really bad but there was nothing I could do. ( didn't tell him I hit his dog a month earlier...)

Bird was a little sparrow, splattered down below the headlight and wedged parts into the forks and triple and guts and stuff all over the front cylinder. What a mess!

i've hit a small bird (robin i think), and a couple of squirrels, and baby rabbit.
one of the squirrels fell out of a tree over the road and either bounced or jumped up into the toe of my boot.

the rabbit i didn't even realize i had hit until i came back down the road. it was a gravel road and i was on a dirtbike. that little rabbit didn't even make a little wobble.

i've come relatively close to hitting black bears 2 times now.

My brother is a pilot for XTO Energy out of  FT. Worth, Texas.   I was visiting him recently, and his boss told me he was riding his BMW (I think)  and T-Boned a Deer doing about 55.  No gear, No helmet.  Totaled the bike.  Spent like a week in the hospital, broke an arm I think and scraped up his head, but he's fine.    Couple of the guys went to look for the deer, there was no sign of it.   They found it a couple days later in the top of a tree near the crash site.

Came up to the top of a little rise this Sunday at about 50mph only to see a buzzard in the middle of the road feeding on something he didn't want to abandon without a fight.  Slowed down a bit and moved off to the left since it didn't seem like he wanted to move, only to have him take off at the last minute right into the nose of my bike.  He just kind of bounced off and flopped down on his feet on the other side of the highway.  I raised my arm in victory and rode on... 8)

I did once have some sort of wasp or bee fly up the cuff of my jacket once and sting me several times on the forearm. I was only a couple of blocks from works, so toughed it out, but did an entertaining little dance for everyonew while I tried to get my jacket off.
Another time I was cruising slowly with my visor open and got stung just over the right eye. Again, another little dance on the side of the road trying to get my helmet off. Damn eye almost swole shut.

Once in deep west Texas I almost hit a family of wet backs running across the road. They jump out when you least expect it and can really mess up your day.  :P

I had two close calls today - one with a smaller deer and one with a big wild turkey.

Bird hit me in the face, almost knocked me off the bike.  And I ran over a possum last summer. Poor guy.

Raccoon, in a corner at about 55 mph, AT NIGHT!

This was a few years back on my FJ, it waggled ferociously for a moment then straightened out.  Just enough to grease my shorts!

i've hit a small bird (robin i think), and a couple of squirrels, and baby rabbit.
one of the squirrels fell out of a tree over the road and either bounced or jumped up into the toe of my boot.

the rabbit i didn't even realize i had hit until i came back down the road. it was a gravel road and i was on a dirtbike. that little rabbit didn't even make a little wobble.

i've come relatively close to hitting black bears 2 times now.

-Did you say 2 black bears!??? Holy crap. That would not be too pretty.

Glad to hear you are ok...I hit a deer this past Saturday, my gear did its job too...just sore and bruised, gear is done and so is my '06 S4R...thinking Tuono or S4RS too...let me know what you go with...problem with Aprilia for me is no dealership nearby to service.

stay safe, and ride hard [moto] [thumbsup]

I haven't hit a bird but my buddie Clint did last year.  I was about 100 feet behind him when it happened.

Hit a deer on my old GS1100e. Silly thing hopped right in front of me at about 45mph. Lucky those bikes have HUGE headlights so she didn't come over the bars. I rode about 50-75 yards with her wrapped around the forks. I was trying to figure out what to do. Afraid to stop because I've watched to many "When Nature Attacks" programs. I kept invisioning her getting off the front of my bike, dusting herself off and opening a can of whoop-ass on me. My dilemma was finally solved for me when she was pulled under the bike by her trailing hooves going under the rear tire. Most morbid ramp eva.

On a side note, had a very cute gf at the time and played up the sympathy card well. She was a message therapist, she brought over chinese a movie, popcorn and worked on my neck and shoulders for an hour or so. Very nice.

Wish I had a picture like that of me holding the turkey that crushed my vertebrae! Today is the two year anniversary of me coming home from the rehab hospital. I seriously need to give up dove hunting and focus all my efforts on turkey hunting. [laugh] Wonder if someone makes a Benelli Super 90 mount for Ducatis? [thumbsup] [moto]

I was following a buddy on his honda 599 when he hit a decent sized bird doing about 50mph. I wasn't too far behind him and rode through a wall of feathers. It was pretty funny. Hit his bike square on the headlight.

I've never hit a bird myself, but I have had a bee hit me in the neck, slide down my jacket, then proceed to sting the shit out of me. Mrs. MN thought I was make the beast with two backsing nuts when I all of a sudden started freaking out and slammed on the brakes to pull off the road.  [laugh]  It must've been quite the sight.

Especially after you started doing what looked like a really bad version of an Irish Jig on the side of the road. I couldn't help it, it was funny to watch.

I had a run in with insects, but it wasn't a collision.  We had stopped at a rest area and I set my helmet on a wooden picnic table.  Apparently my sweaty helmet attracted fire ants.  They didn't start biting until I was a few miles down the road  [bang]  I had about 20 bites on my head.
