Title: The Street Fighter....
Post by: Big T on May 23, 2009, 04:21:28 PM
Okay somebody has to do it so here it is..... The SF thread.

I make no secret that I'm interested.

BUT I have to see it, feel it, smell it, taste it, ride it, touch it.

So in the mean time lots of surfing the web looking.....

This forum has some good stuff in a dedicated SF thread:
http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=55 (http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=55)

And especially this thread:
http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14353 (http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14353)

Lots of "expert" SF riders / testers from the mags (Latest Aus Motor Cycle has a review) out there. I read all their reviews with a grain of salt.......

Talking to Frasers (Sydney) they are expecting the release to be round the 7th June with a ride day to follow some weeks after (yep my name is down).

Price for the SF "S"..... No one is committing but expect to have $34,000 in the bank and this will give you some change to fill it with fuel and enjoy a beer with the boys.

My first desirable mod...... Under seat exhausts or like my Zards on the S4RT.... None yet. "It won't happen over night but it will happen".....

Let the fun begin......  ;D

PS: I like the Red one.......

You'll buy one Big T, I have no doubt about it. It's just a matter of when.
I do like the look also but I have a new to play with right now.
SBK is the next thing for me.
I'll join you for the launch and following ride day, just for shits and giggles.

I can see the plate SFS BT.

The First thing I would be doing is removing the White LED's from the little lights under the headlight, and changing them to red.
Evil red eyes!  [evil]

any idea what the S package is going to cost...difference between the two.

the traction control, for those with the skill (like you Big T) sounds simply amazing from the 1198 reviews I've read.

Spider some purely pluck out your bum pricing that is unoffocial from Farsers...

SFS = $33,500 on the road with all rego, ins (Comp & 3rd Party), dealer delivery (The real price).

SF - $28-29,000 as above.......

"All care take but no responsibility"

And I like the data logging thingie..... Come home and download and see what you really did......

Just a bit more candy for you Big T.

I don't know if it's photo-chopped or real. But it looks pretty mean with that shorty pipe and nothing under the tail.

Do my mirrors look big on me? First thing that would need to go.... Still not a fan of the headlight, but mebbe....

And the lack of fairing gives yor hair that "straight from the salon" look, esp when ridden without a hemet  [cheeky]

Also, matty not sure about the single shorty in the pic before, the stockers are low and big - how can one shortly deliver the same flow, who knows...

Well,... don't want to keep you all waiting.

So, Ducaty Streetfighter, about to come out for $32K

Looks like this,

Rated at about 120 SCP's from the factory. 150/155 is the maximum a mass production bike could earn in SCP's.
So yes high score. Particularly for the gold frame, black body, termi package.

Mods,
1. well first would be the plastic tail/plate bracket & remove reflectors. +2 SCP
2. Accessorie Virgin hair colour needs to be real, bottles dont count, otherwise -1 SCP if fake, +25 SCP, if she/he is real.
3. Single shorty Exhaust pipe, similar to GIXXER/R6 Setup. +15 SCP
4. Remove rear pegs and have a genuine MonoPosto seat. +10 SCP
5. Carbon skinni (similar to original monster) front fender. +10 SCP
6. Carbon lower cowl. +5 SCP*
7. Under top tripple Clip on's. Ride it low baby +20 SCP
8. Exposed clutch, nice custom piece, with lots of inbuilt rattle! +15 SCP
9. Accessorie virgin must ride their own^. +20 SCP
10. Accessorie virgin stays at home and lets your friend borrow the bike +100 SCP

* Carbon must be real, or - 20 SCP if fake.
^ If accesorie virign can ride in heels, +10 SCP to them, but -10 SCP if you can't... so choose wise.

Alrighty, was never a big fan from the pics (as in it looks incomplete with part fairing, etc ... bit like S4R fridgey thing).

But the other day, something caught my eye, it was mostly obscured by a riding buddy on a HM, but it looked a lot prettier in the flesh than I had expected even though it was just a passing glance.

So I have seen one, but might get a better look towards the end of the week.

OK so my next viewing of the SFs was when I went to the tyre shop to pick one up. Yep, that's right ... I was standing there in shorts and t-shirt when the offer was made ... and I was a very naughty (I believe the word is) squid.

Rode the bike back from the shop to the garage, only a couple of kms ... but I am probably lucky I can't afford one. Seems to fit me pretty well as a midget - so I don't know how you will go Big T. As my little 800 is the most powerful bike I have ridden (or had ridden to thet point in time) it was just too different to really provide any meaningful advice to you 'big bike guys'. Also a a couple of kms in city traffic is not the best guide - I definitely had plenty to think about.

So I just might be the first Ozmo rider to take one for a spin  ;D

You certainly are Betty.
They are in store this week at Frasers but only to look at.
Won't be one to ride until July sometime, so Big T you're gonna have to wait.
Fancy a trip over there one afternoon this week Big T?

I think I got a couple from the dealer but I have no way of downloading the photos at the moment.

Sorry I have been a bit distracted.

Oh and another thing a have a couple of photos on the camera: one of the guys had already converted his 1098 to a type of streetfighter ... as he says it 'without the compromises', but I'm afraid you will have to wait for that too.

Well I had to go visit a customer today and went the long eerrr short way and swung past Frasers for a look at the Black SF (sorry no camera)....

Interesting......  [roll]

Sitting on the bike it is a classic Hypermoto style position. Upright and feels like your over the front wheel. Seat is higher than the Monster but not an issue for me with long legs. Had to adjust the family jewels. Bit like the 1100 with them resting nicely against the tank.

The front LCD display looks like it is half way down the forks and the lack of front screen would lead to lots of wind blast at speed.

This was the SFS and had some nice CF bits but I was surprised at all the plastic still present.

The Black isn't my colour either as I like the red (Purely personal preference).

The pipes are "big".... The Termis would be a far better option.....

My overall impression...... I'm a little disappointed. Not quite what I thought it would be.  [roll]

But I am still booked for the test ride and it will be on a Red one in mid July.....

If any Sydneyites want to see it it is a Frasers till COB Saturday.........

The pipes are "big".... The Termis would be a far better option.....

... and a common criticism so far has been that the exhaust routing forces your right foot to stick out at a funny angle if you ride with your toes on the pegs. Unsure as to whether that can be fixed with aftermarket pipes ... a few of the comments were indicating an underseat exhaust (such as the 1098) would not be possible  :-\

Wow, great minds think alike. I accidentally found I had to swing past Frasers today as well..  [thumbsup]

My camera battery was flat, so there are a few more (poor) random shots on FlickR (http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigeaux/sets/72157619540465774/), but you get the drift.

Overall, I actually *really* like it.

Things that I could like better:
* I agree that there was a little too much plastic in some sections (rear right exhaust guard etc, rear hugger, front radiator covers).
* The pillion pegs were welded to the rear subframe, so there is no removal option that doesn't involve an angle grinder.
* All of the rubber pipes for the oil cooler and the Radiator look pretty average (braided lines would fix that :)) and the stock pipes suck ass.
* make the beast with two backsing Mirrors from a 696 .
* Plastic Clutch and Brake Reservoirs look cheap IMO
* Full Termi system, add $5K!!!1!!

But sitting on it something just felt right..

* It was a little more sportsbikey than a monster, but not enough for it to be uncomfortable. The bars didn't feel as wide and were a little bit swept back relative to the monster.
* Narrow tank was easy to grip with my legs and the foot felt position felt great.
* It definitely feels like a better fit than the 1100 or the 696 Monster form factor for the Larger Gentleman©.
* The wheels looked TOPS.
* Ohlins everywhere.
* Black irradescant body with gold frame looked looked a lot nicer IRL than the photos indicate.
* The rear brake is bigger than my S2R's front brake.
* The front brakes are bigger than my cars brakes.
* Traction control std: you need it for 155HP stock (allegedly 170HP with a full termi system!)
* $33K ride away for the Streetfighter S, but if you have to spend 15K on bling you end up looking at $50K for what at the end of the days is a naked bike. I'd much rather a second hand S4R and a track bike and a traily and change.

Matty I didn't get that same "feeling" as when I first saw and sat on my S4RT.......

And agree with Craig in that you would need to spend $40Gs minimum (Bike & Bling) to get it to a stage where it was acceptably "blinged "....  8)

I like my Monster.....  [moto]

Title: Re: The Street Fighter....
Post by: Betty on June 10, 2009, 04:28:13 AM
Nice post Craig. I didn't really get the chance to give the thing the critical eye, but a few of the things you mention stand out.

* Those 696 mirrors break easy apparently  :-X (don't mention the war and all that)
* Go full custom for the exhaust  ;D

* I admit to being a little surprised that it felt right for you. That was exactly my first thought when I sat on one ... and remember thinking I don't know how this will go for the big blokes
* New style Monster would not be on my list if I was in the market
* 155 HP make the beast with two backs me, lucky I didn't know that before I jumped on (what are our 800s? less than half that?). Our little bambino (Fiat 500) only has about 18HP to give you a different perspective ... the Lammie far less than that. And there was me in shorts and t-shirt (at least they lent me a helmet and gloves)  :-[
* $33k is certainly more attractive than mid 20s for the M1100S I reckon, but once you've had bling, there's no turning back

talking to ducati guys here and there saying a lot of people are just going to hang on to there currant model cause they reckon the new monster range is shit and its reflected in there sales with more people buying a 1098 in stead , so jukie and betty can you fix up the design department while your over there cheers bazz

Title: Re: The Street Fighter....
Post by: craigo on June 11, 2009, 04:31:33 AM
Leaving the old monster/new monster argument aside, I reckon the SF is a different beast altogether. It isn't trying to be a monster. It's a Streetfighter. There is no.logical.reason for wanting a 150++hp bike with no fairing to ride on the public road. This bikes target market is the insane. That in and of itself is part of it's attraction for me.    [moto]

Title: Re: The Street Fighter....
Post by: mattyvas on June 11, 2009, 04:47:13 AM
Was over there today and have to say that I'm no fan of the headlight arrangement.
In person it didn't get better, maybe in red or maybe in better light. It was sitting right in the doorway with
sunlight making hot spots all over it.
The seating position was not bad for me, lots of leg room around the tank cut outs.
As for the cans and asking $5k for Termi's and ECU making the S model almost $40k that's a lot of coin
for a neeked bike in my book. 150hp aside, I do see attractive items on the bike, a good tail tidy will open up a really
neat looking rear section.
I see what Big T is talking about with the dash, it's pretty low and could be hard to find a warp 1 or 2 or 2.5

I had a quick look in frasers and the pillion pegs didnt look to be welded but bolted to the subframe . But hopefully the termis would have there own bracket so you dont have to run the pillion pegs .

Sorry to spoil your hope Feral but you gotta use the same hanger.

Wasn't the S4Rs $21,995 +ORC and Tri Coloure $23,995 +ORC
That would make it about $23,500 and $25,500 that's still about $10k less than the SF.
Or am I mistaken on the price of the S4Rs when it was new?

I was planning to buy one at the end of the year and thought this bike would be everything i wanted from a bike.

I had a look on Friday and didn't like the black at all.

I hated the riding position.

I hated the fact i will be blown off the bike above 130km/h.

The sales guy is getting me in for a burn next month as, maybe a ride will change my mind. Obviously a lot of people love this bike, i feel like a traitor LOL  [bacon]

33K onroad ride away Dock for the S. +5K for a full termi system (or whatever other 3rd party pipes end up costing). + the rest of the CF you need to buy to replace the cheap plastic looking junk on it (hugger, chain guards, exhaust heat shield, radiator covers), + your other generic bling (levers, mirrors, drips, clutch cover, etc).

Hmmm. Maybe I should stop typing now in case I talk BigT out of this any further.  :-X

Quick side note regarding the pillion pegs. A pommy bloke on his honeymoon took one out the other day, she lasted 4 corners before getting off ... they moved to the M1100S for the rest of the day.

I haven't checked out the fixings but pillion pegs seem a bit superfluous ... you'd wanta hope they come off clean and easy.

You still need to mount the pipes to something.
So why was it they got off the SF, bad ergo's I guess for pillion riding.

maybe the implied meaning was "she lasted 4 corners before 'getting off'"?  [cheeky]

No, no ... poor ergos for the pillion.

But I have had a chat to the guys from Ducati Tours who have spent some time on their SFS (one is a Superbike guy ... think 1198S, 1098R - the other had created his own SF from a 1098 before the SF was released). So, some random comments I remember from our discussions:

. The exhaust routing is a real problem, riding with toes on the footpegs was causing knee pain the way it kicks out your heel and keeps your leg at the wrong angle
. 155 HP is according to them ... ahem ... bullshit. It may be the way the power is delivered but feels nothing like a 1098 and they suggest maybe 100-120HP would be more accurate
. They didn't rate the body positioning ... but bear in mind what they normally ride. They find the 'old-style' monster posture just wrong and too different to all the 'other' bikes. I liked the positioning better than the 'new-style' monsters which they say are more like the 'other' bikes if that gives you an idea of viewpoints.
. If you want more power the SFS is not really the bike ... buy a 1098/1198. They had two guys ride the bike who were looking at buying ... one had an S4R the other a HM ... having ridden it, neither were interested. Apparently the power doesn't feel as good as the S4R - the S4R has more low down.
. The thing is too docile. It is (so far) impossible to trigger the traction control system whereas on the 1198S with a reasonably 'free' traction control setting the system seems to light up with gay abandon  [evil]

Other things may come back to me, but what I suggested and got some agreement:
. Ducati are catering for the US market ... big written down power number, probably only used for highway riding or posing around town (sort of Harley with Ducati pedigree if that makes any sense).
. It would probably be the right bike for someone like me looking for an upgrade (S2R 800). Because I could really notice the power difference and the ergos are probably closer to my Monster than they are to 'other' bikes.
. The headlight and instrument cluster (discussed above) ... I didn't find the instruments that low, it does provide better forward visibility. So you need to look a little lower ... we shift by feeeel remember  ;D. I like the low-ness of the headlight - it flows with the tank better (something I hate about the Sport Classics is the direction the tank takes your eye).

We installed a Termi slip-on system for now.

Quat D is making a very interesting modular system for the Streetfighter that will allow you to use the same cannisters in three different configurations: STD position, Higher position with new midpipe (where the top pipe will be mounted above the current top pipe) and a full system with one cannister on each side using all new pipe.

It does look better with underseat exhausts. Dont like those cans much (needs say, Zards or LeoVince).

They just don't seem to photograph well at the best of times. I see 'em in photos and go "meh", but when I see them in real life they make me happy in my pants.

And I still reckon 35K+++ is too expensive for what you get.

white bikes rule  [bow_down]

at the point of what they've done with the exhaust (the $ spent)....would have been cheaper to buy a 1098 and sell the fairings on ebay to someone who's dropped/wants to race theirs.

Mmmmmm saw a red one today at Frasers Wollongong and well it just didn't grab me! I kept going back to the 1198.

IMO way tooooo much plastic. Kinda makes an FZ1 look good!

Robs 2 cents.
