Yes so some time in the past week my brake light has stopped working when the brakes are depressed front or rear neither works. I have done a couple of searchs with a few trouble shooting ideas so far I got nothing to work. The running light works when the bike is on, bulb is good, I changed it just in case with a new one, and it is in the correct position. Fuse is good I did not replace it but it seems to be in good shape and contacts are clean. The micro switches front and rear seem to disengage fully like they should I also depressed them manually. They only thing I have not tried that was sugjested in another post was to loosen the micro switch screws a little and reposition it and use a multimeter to test the wires which I am unsure of how to do that. I have not made any significant changes to the electrical system. I was working on the lambada sensor but only stripped the wires and installed an amp connector none of the wires are touching. Any ideas on what I should do? I don't think both of the micro switches could have went bad at the same time atleast one should work. The bike is an 06 S2R1K. Thanks in advance
My S4 ate the rear brake light switch right when I bought it. They replaced it and it's been good to go ever since. The front has had a problem.
Since neither brake operates the light the problem most likely not a switch, but checking the front switch is easy. Follow the wires from the microswitch down to the connector. Disconnect. Place an ohmmeter across the wires from the switch. When the lever is applied, the meter should show continuity. No meter? Just jump the two wires that the switch connects to. With the key on, if you now have a brake light, you need to either replace or adjust the switch. No light? Bulb, socket, fuse or wiring. A fuse can look good, but still be bad. Check it with an ohmmeter or replace it. Extra fuses are good to have anyway. With the wire still jumped, key on, there should be battery voltage at the tab that contacts the filament. If so, the problem is either the bulb or the tab is not making good contact with the bulb.
Are you sure it's the parking light that is on, and not the brake light that is stuck on?
When I had a switch go bad, the brake light was stuck on. Ended up being the front switch was not disengaging properly die to a bent switch mount (on my old coffin master).
This also happened to a friends SC with the rear switch, but that was due to a improperly adjusted/bent rear lever.
Darkstar: Pretty sure it is not stuck on only one of the filaments is on and it is not very bright.
Howie: Thank you for your advice I will try the suggestions new fuse, and will test both connections with a multimeter I tried adjusting the front switch today no dice
I just had this happen to me too. I took my light off for a track day and when I put it back the brake light stayed on. It ended up being the back brake switch. I just disconnected it for now since I don`t use it very often. I`ll look at it later to see if it`s shorted or needs adjustment.
mine has done similar things, and it was the rear switch and the contacts for the light had actually been bent out a bit somehow and needed to be cleaned and pushed back in place.
Well the fuze was bad so I changed it but still no workie. I tested everything for resistance correctly I think also tested new fuse. The hareness seems good, both switches tested out ok, all the wires for the light were ok, I cleaned all the contact points on it as well. Blinkers work some shoddy connections there so I added new quick disconnects. The left prong seem like it was not contacting the bulb so I adjusted it in some. Hope I am doing something wrong I really don't want to take it in for something so simple blinkers work, running light works, plate light works.
This is my procedure for testing the wires I set the meter to 20k ohm resistance disconnected front switch and rear tested them by attaching meter then applying brake. While at rest no resistance when brakes were applied it showed resistance.
On my 97 M900 the bulb will go in wrong and cause the brake light to stay on. Look at the contacts and make sure they are touching the bulb.
So the issue was a bad ground in the hareness and the filaments were switched problem resolved thanks for your help guys
