Title: House Fire = No More Monster
Post by: thejsnide on May 24, 2009, 06:45:08 PM
So my garage caught fire today, and unfortunately I have lost my house and Ducati.... I will post some pics of the inferno here shortly along with pictures of the roasted Duc.  It's all kind of surreal still, but I'm hoping the home owners insurance will cover the bike since I only had liability on her.  The fire inspector has ruled the cause as an electrical fire, so hopefully the insurance company will be kind to us.... hopefully.  It's been a sad day, but I'm safe as are my dogs.

House fires suck!  To a quick and painless as possible insurance settlement and rebuild.

Yeah, it's really something special when you get to see your pride and joy (house and motorcycle) blow up in your face.  I literally watched the Duc blow the F up from about 50 feet away.  Something special I tell ya..

Sorry to hear.  But don't worry, house can be fix, and you can certainly get another Duc for sure.  Maybe even an upgrade!

Most important things are safe, you and your family (including dog).  =)

As the house goes, it's pretty bad...  Wait until I post some more pics of the aftermath...  Unfortunately in the third pick, the garage door, when it came down, is being supported by my brand new toolbox and the Duc is right in the middle.

WOW! So sorry that happened to you.
As long as you and your loved ones are safe, everything else is gravy. That's why they call it insurance. Homeowners should cover all loss, including toolbox and [moto]
Now let's see, you had the new streetfighter with the full Termi setup, right? ;D

I agree. Total f#@king bummer on a biblical scale. Glad all are OK. Things can be replaced but that's easy for me to say when they weren't my things. You aren't human if you don't get attached to stuff. Especially if it's family stuff, pics of the family, childhood crap, maybe something of your Dad or Mom if they have passed on...

A big house fire like that is a big concern to me. Don't know how I would handle it. Certainly not as well as you. Again, really sorry for the loss. Memorial Day weekend will never be the same for you. This defines heartbreak. :'(

Glad you and yours are ok dude.

I'm with fastwin on this one, it's easy to be objective when we're not directly involved. While it's definitely true that you saved the most important things, losing a house, bike, etc really is horrible.

Keep us up to date with insurance.

Dude, you lost the mini van too!! Well, now you can rebuild the garage with a bike bay, get a new Monster, and ditch the mini van for something less, well, mini-van-ish!

Just trying to add some humor to the grim situation. Hey, as most have said, you and the dogs are ok, that is what counts!! Material things come and go, but loved ones just go!

So sorry to hear about this. What matters is that you and your pets got out safely.

On another note, and I hate to be the one to mention this, but homeowners does not cover vehicles. At least in pa. They have their own policys. I found all this out when talking to my State Farm agent after I almost burned my garage down.

Dude, what a great article!

The margarita part of this tale of woe is that you are now immortalized as a badass!

It makes you sound like Chuck f-ing Norris. New Ducati in the garage, exploding. You, leaping through the flames, pistol in hand.

The only thing missing is you roundhouse kicking the fire into submission!

Just got finished talking with the insurance adjuster and they DO NOT cover motorcycles under the policy we had.  This REALLY blows...  I'm out of a home, my mother is out a car, and I am out of a motorcycle...  It's my own fault for not having anything more than liability on our vehicles.  I bought the monster for $3500 cash, and since it was my first bike and my driving record wasn't that great, full coverage and compensation would have cost me almost $2000 a year... So I opted for liability which was about $500 a year.  I was pretty devastated when he told me it wasn't covered.

What can you do though... life will still go on and I still have my pups.  They are going to rebuild our house which should take about 6 months and I will be saving, again, to buy another bike in the near future.  Thanks for everyone's help here, over the past year or so while I was new to the bike and riding and asking typical newb questions... you all helped me out more than you know.  [thumbsup]  Hopefully I will be back on two wheels in the near future...

Never believe or take the first offer from an insurance adjuster. I would have a lawyer review your policy prior to accpeting any type of settlement. The motorcycle should be covered the same as any other possession.

Unfortunately that's not how it works.

Cars and bikes (vehicles) have their own policies to protect against fire and theft, or if you crash and it's your fault.

Liability only will only help you if you hit someone else.  If the bike/car is stolen, crashed, burned etc, it's gone.  It doesn't matter that it was in your garage when it happened (in the case of the OP)

Homeowners covers things that don't have their own policies.

Im thinking of calling my agent to see about protecting my track bike against fire/theft since I read this thread :(

You should it is very cheap my brother went into the army and took his bike off the road.  Since he owes $$$ on it he had to keep fire/theft insurance on it.  It is only 80$ a year.

Sucks to hear about this, but as you've heard from everyone else, at least the important and really irreplaceable things are ok.  I just marvel at how easy it is to get caught up in petty everyday bullshit, and how little it all really means when something like this happens.

Replying via iPhone until Monday when we move into our temporary home. I also get to fight it out with the adjuster on Monday to see how much money we will get for our personal property.
Guys, I really want to thank you for the offer of donations towards a new bike, I just can't accept. It means so much to me that people I have never met could be so gracious, but please understand. The main reason is that financially, I can't justify a new one. Last July I was laid off from a really decent job where I made great money as a chef. My new job is paying me about 40% less than the prior... but hey, at least I have a job.
Second, next summer when my gf finishes med school we are planning a move out west which is where all of my money is directed. I'm also about 5k in the red from when I was on unemployment for 5 months. To me, it just seems like the bike will have to wait about two years until I get back on my feet.
I can't thank you all enough for the continuing support of me and my family. I know everything is going to work out for us in the end.  [thumbsup]

Sounds like it's going to a good cause, even if not another bike.
Use it in good health, and pay it forward when you can.
Jeff

Just consider my small contribution a "Red Cross" disaster relief $$.

Use it for whatever you need

DP, why no cc?
because it's my personal account and if many people use cc they'll turn it into a premier or biz account...

and take their cut on everything anyone ever sends me.

[thumbsup]

You don't get to refuse. ;D

Maybe you should just let us do what we do and get your life settled...

We'll talk later. ;)

If he won't except money, why not give him this http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=16106.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=16106.0) ?
And then give money to MrIncredible.

Win-Win  ;D

It's a clever plan, but let's just see whether the pending sale for that beauty falls through first, shall we?

:D

Hello DMF...

We moved into our temporary home on Saturday which was two days earlier than expected, so that's good.  It's a really nice place in the neighborhood across the street from where our old house was.  I went and spoke with the insurance adjuster earlier today, and he couldn't have been nicer.  I have begun making a list of everything I owned that was destroyed by the fire, this will be fun!  [roll]  The restoration company has pretty much moved everything out of our house to begin the cleaning and restoration process.  My clothes were returned to me today free of the awful smoke smell.
Things are starting to finally turn around. [thumbsup]  For example, I won tickets to go see POISON on the radio today, which was rather comical.  [laugh] Anyway, I have received some donations from some of you, and I cannot express in words how thankful and appreciative I am.  It still blows me away that people I have never met (and may never) can be so courteous and helpful, I really can't thank you all enough for the support and for letting me vent a little. I will keep you guys posted on any new information I receive and on how the process unfolds.  I'll say it again, I really just cannot thank you guys enough for the support...

Jordan

It's what we do here. I have been on the receiving end of the generosity here and will do what I can to help out fellow riders in their time of need any way I can.

I guess its better seeing poison than say... Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Roof_Is_on_Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Roof_Is_on_Fire)  or Talking Heads and hearing "Burning down the house".

I'm glad you are ok and as long as you have that you can get back to where you were.  Stay in good spirits.

I hope things turn around for you, and only thing that matters is you and the lady are ok.  Congrats on her getting out of med school, it'll all be worth it!  The new bike will come, and about the donation thing, it's all about passing it along  [thumbsup]

Thanks,

It makes you sound like Chuck f-ing Norris. New Ducati in the garage, exploding. You, leaping through the flames, pistol in hand.

Cooler than fighting a mountain lion with a chain saw (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,533420,00.html?test=latestnews)?

Maybe.

I just read your post, and i hope everything keeps going well for you!

I know how much time it takes and how incredibly difficult it is to get your life back on track after losing everything in your house. (mine was a flood Jan 09 and still trying to recover $$ from the insurance)

I was recommended a Private adjuster to itemize all of your items and make sure the ins. does pay you for what your entitled to. It's possible to list out all the upgrades and components of the bike, and get reimbursed for the parts. I didn't know about these Private Adjusters, so i thought it might help someone to pass it along.

Looks like this group is really amazing! you guys really are awesome.  [bow_down]

Its been awhile since I have posted so I apologize for that... I will post some pictures of the rebuild, which is going really well so far with no delays.... fingers crossed.  The donations that were given to me were handed over to my mother, who owned the house, for her to put toward a new car.  All in total she received about $7,000 in donations from the DMF, the school's she has taught at, and just other friends and family members in general.

I can't express in words the look on her face when I gave her the money and told her where it came from... And for that I am in the deepest gratitude to all of you who helped us out.

So after $55,000 worth of dry cleaning, one lucky dog who was saved, a new car for my mother, etc. it's all turning around for us, and hopefully for the better...

Thanks again to all, and I will put some new pictures up in the next few days.

Jordan

Hahaha....  Definitely not another minivan... She got a Toyota 4Runner.  At least you couldn't see the license plate that said "MOMRULZ," which she's had since about 1993 and was transferred to the new 4Runner.  All I can say in her defense of the van was that she never bought one.  They were always handed down from her mother when she wanted a new one about every 5 years, so I guess you can't turn down a free car.  We are hoping to be back in the house by October at the latest.  They have been working non-stop and have really given us a tremendous effort on all parts.
