Title: I want to record while I am riding... suggestions? Details inside
Post by: MsTek on May 25, 2009, 05:21:38 PM
Hi guys... I have another question.

I know  you all get boners wanting to record the rumble of your exhausts but what I want to record is some of the running commentary I have inside my helmet.  Yes, sometimes I am talking to myself in my helmet about what is going on the road.  I realized a while back that it actually might be interesting to some people, esp.  some of my friends who have recently gotten into motorcycles because of me.  Ultimately, I'd love to record what I am seeing and have my commentary in my helmet recorded so I can post it.  Sometimes I get some interesting traffic that well- I'm sure newer riders would be interested in some Chicago riding and what comes out of my mouth when I encounter a taxi.

I am trying to figure out how to do this without wires all over the place.  Do any of you have any cool suggestions on how I might do this.  And no, recording the video then me dubbing over it will totally miss the point.  Its only interesting what flies out of my mouth on the fly when I'm pissed/amused.  I can't recreate that.

Thanks a ton! :)

Oh thanks... but the throat mic got bad reviews.. and I still need the camera... not just voice by itself...  the camera mounted on bike or helmet, mic picking up what I am saying.

Does that make sense?

I would worry if I did illegal things.  I do not.

i came up with those in about a minute and a half on google...
there are plenty of different systems which you can combine to get audio/video while riding. really just depends how much you are willing to spend, and what kind of quality you are looking for.

A few of the local guys have the camera used in this vid (ignore the shitty soundtrack)

You can hear the engine a bit over the music, but I"m not sure if there's a port for an external mic on the camera itself (doubt it).  The guy in front in the vid has the same camera that he mounts right to the front of his helmet below the visor so if you put it there it may pick up your voice, but I dunno.  I'll have to check with the guys next time we go out.  As far as cost goes I think it runs sub $300 and it's about the size of a small digital camera, runs on normal batteries (AA or AAA, don't remember) and takes SD cards.

I was at my local Costco today and for $75 ( new instant rebate) was a mini sport digital camcorder. was advertised for sport use, It even came with a water proof case and helmet mount. I'm unsure of the quality though.

There are youtube Moto Vloggers that run a digital camera inside their helmet, in front of their noses... This doesnt seem like a great idea... Imagine crashing with a camera in your face.  Also, digicams typically do not have ultra-wide lenses, so you'll basically get a jumbled image that doesnt do a good job of capturing your field of view.

There's also the gopro.. But I dont like this idea either cause the quality sux and mounting it on top of your lid is horrible for aerodynamics.

I just found out about ContourHD, from www.vholdr.com (http://) (http://) (http://) . Looks like a smallish lipstick cam that you mount to the side of your helmet. It's simple to operate, just slide the switch to start recording. It has a 135 degree field of view, and the image quality looks great. The downside is that it has internal mic only, so you wouldnt be able to record yourself talking. You could probably get a mic, and hook it up to a voice recorder to record your voice. Just manually line up the audio and video in your editing software.

Anyways, just my 2 cents. I want one of these to record travels and trackdays.

I wish my helmet wasn't so tight- then I could get it inside the helmet (and when I crash, it will go into my skull and I will become one of the Borg).

But some good ideas here.  The one I like best is of course, $600. =/

The best helmet cam (and mike) on the market is the Vio POC 1.5.

I just picked one up from REI, and the video rivals DVD quality.  Of course, you will need rechargeable batteries or you should wire it onto your bike.  The microphone is half way down the camera cord.  With a 4 GB card, it shows I can record for 322 minutes on mine.
