Title: 883 and me
Post by: 1313 on May 26, 2009, 10:44:14 AM
A friend picked up his 09 HD Iron 883 last week. I think it looks good for what it is. We went riding around today. That is all.  [moto] [beer]

I don't know, I would have to settle for the XR1200.  Although I think that buying a Crossbones would give you instant acceptance into the hardcore harley crowd.

I kind of like it. Though I would black out those shiny pipes and maybe opt for the 1200 Nightster instead of the Iron.

XR1200 could be fun.  A Nightster 1200 (my local dealer has one) looks like it could be a fun ride too ~

Looks good, but I woulda gone with the 1200. Not sure that 883 has enough power to get out of it's own way...

I had the last generation 883 sportster and it was god awful. No handling, no acceleration, no braking, no suspension so every bump was absorbed by my lower spine.

The only nice thing was all the respect I got from gap toothed rednecks at gas stations........now that I think about it, there were no nice things....

The Duc is much better.

Not the Hardcore biker crowd.   The wannabe hardcore biker crowd.    You know, the guys with the fringe on the handlebars, and the gloves with no fingers.   When it's 35 degrees out.   No wait, scratch that, they don't ride when it's 35 degrees out.

a buddy of mine got one, i think the 1200 big bore kit is cheaper than getting the nightster, and it has the all black engine. anyways, its ok, i like my 696 better.

I don't think Harley's crank under 80 degrees.  From about June to August, the motorcycle parking at work looks like an Hell's Angels reunion.  The rest of the year it is my Duc and an old Goldwing.   I am not sure if it should be labeled as pathetic or pitiful, but some of these guys even start growing beard about February to look tougher during the "ridin' weather".

Its still a Harley. My biggest issue with a Harley is that they are just everywhere. Old guys who all of a sudden have a midlife crisis go out and buy these things along with all the gear and then talk smack about any other bike. The mystique of a Harley is long gone. I'm not saying dont go buy one cus that is your prerogative. I just wouldn't be caught dead on one.  There are plenty of other cruisers out there that are way cooler than a Harley, IE Triumph

We did some wrenching today and installed a Vance & Hines Shortshots exhaust on his 883. It's freakin' mean as hell. The mirrors were also moved under the handlebar. Personal preference thing...

Hint: that rear center reflector comes off in a matter of seconds. So do the ones under the fender struts. ;)

Definitely looks better with the new, blacked-out pipes.  [thumbsup]

Tell him not to throw away any stock parts. He may need them later to get the bikes inspection renewed. They are cracking down in Delaware including reflectors!  The 883 is a good bike good (reliability wise) and gets gas mileage . It does beat you up though.

Enjoy the ride Tim,
