Title: Need help from an older monster owner
Post by: 4DoorSi on May 26, 2009, 11:16:48 AM
This should be an easy help for anyone with an older monster, or maybe a newer one.

One of the previous owners of my bike, which is a 99 M750, managed to pull the wires for the low fuel sensor out of the wiring harness.  So, I have two wires hanging from the tank with no connector on them.  Then I have the connector which goes into the bikes wiring harness.  I probably won't get a new harness, just bypass it and connect the wires together with some butt connectors or something.

What I need to know is which wires connect together.

If anyone can peek at their bike and let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

It's only a float switch so I would think it doesn't matter which way around they go.

I'll also second that opinion.

I've got a '99 M750.  I'd be happy to look, might be able to post a pic or something.  It'll be this evening though, I'm at work and my bike is out in the rain.  I'll +1 the comments though ~

Here's the only place I can get to where you can see the wires.  I don't think this was what you needed though ~

your thumb is in the way.

I have the white and black coming from the tank, and the brown and blue going into the wiring harness.  Does Brown connect to white or black?

My pleasure.

The sender on my 96 hasn't worked for years.

Don't be surprised if yours doesn't when you get it hooked up. ;)

Well, that's exactly what happened.

So, how hard/expensive is it to fix/replace the fuel level sensor?  And where can I find one?

Last I checked they were about $100 and available at the dealer only. It's been a while since I checked though. The price probably went up

The tank needs to be empty and the thing just unscrews.

Most people just figure their mileage and use the trip meter to know when they need fuel.

I go by odometer and consider the light a back-up in case, for some reason, my fuel economy is less than expected.  If my sensor failed I'm not sure if I would replace it.
