Title: 999 Showa on S2R1k
Post by: He Man on May 26, 2009, 03:28:16 PM
Some install notes

-Need to cut of the rear coil mounting bracket off. If you're not willing to cut that tab off your frame, this mod isnt for you.
-You will need to remount the regulator.
-You will need to find a solution to the crank case breather problem since the breather box is in the way.

The crank case breather tube connects to the crankcase breather box. the box is actually hollow and has a positive vacuum caused by the intake breather    box tube. Any crankcase fumes that gets spit it goes directly into the intake and back into the system. You can either delete the crankcase breather box and add a filter. In my case, i cut the breather box up and epoxied the two nipples together and connected the two tubes directly. the idea behind it is.... if people run a filter directly off the crank case, then whats wrong with a direct connection to the airbox?

I just need some help setting the shock up and test riding. the 999 Showa features 3 settings you can adjust, preload, and 2 other knobbies. One should be a rebound dampening and the other compression dampening, not sure which one is which and maybe someone here can point me in the right direction to adjust it. It would also seem that the 999 spring is stiffer than the stock S2R1000 spring. which might be perfect for my weight (165lbs geared up)

I havent ridden it yet since im still waiting for this epoxy to cure. Im hoping this shock will cure the unsteady feeling i get on my rear. seems to feel wobbly and always backing out.

It has been my experience that compression is adjusted w/ the top adjuster and rebound with the bottom one in nearly all suspension systems with a similar setup for dirt bikes, atv's, snowmobiles and motorcycles.

Preload should be pretty obvious.

Nice mod BTW.

okay, im trying to dial this thing in, the spring is defintely softer then the monster, by a lot. im going to try and pick up a stiffer spring for it tomorrow. Does anyone know where i can find an accurate spring calculator?

600 lb/in should be good.

i *think* the swing arm on the sbk is shorter or at least the distance between the axle and shock mount is.  therefore a softer spring is used to get a similar wheel rate.  you could just swap your stock spring onto the new shock, or go aftermarket.

Speeddog, do you know what the stock rate is on the s2r 1000?

Ill call up the shop tomorrow and see if they have any 600lb springs, theres not much difference between ohlins or ebiach in these cases right?

Do you guys know how you're suppose to remove the spring after you compress it?

OEM spring is progressive rate.
I don't know what the 'rate' is.

Not sure which brand of spring is going to fit, never had a 999 shock to work on.

After you compress the spring, you remove the retainer, then slowly let the spring extend, then remove it.
