Title: Do you loose bottom end with open airbox?
Post by: lwszabo on May 28, 2009, 05:40:01 AM
I love the sound of my open airbox, But do you loose bottom end power with it?

I believe you gain power throughout the range if the fuel is right.

I have the short DP box w/BMC filter. You do indeed gain power across the band, IF the fuel is right, which mine ATM is not.
But the sound and power surge is seat of the pants fo' sho'!

When I opened the airbox on my 1997 M900 and rejetted, it increased power everywhere.  I didn't exactly put the bike on a dyno, but compared its ability to get and keep the front wheel in the air at various engine speeds.  You could possibly attribute the added power to the jetting, but the important point is that it did not lose power anywhere with the open airbox.

I also did some experiments with different pipes - Gia.Ca.Moto carbon, totally stock, and lightly cored stock pipes.  Other than up above 7000 rpms I couldn't tell any difference in power at all.  But it sounded faster with the louder pipes.
