Title: Above fork clipon's
Post by: caperix on May 28, 2009, 01:39:27 PM
I'm getting ready to tackle the suspension on my '04 620.  One of the mod's I am doing is 998 forks.  I plan on using clipons mounted above the tripple when doing this
mod as I do not want to space the bars up.  My question to those who have dones this, how far does this lower the handle bar possition?  I don't want to go any more than an inch lower than the factory settings, so I am wondering if I will still need riser clipons when mounting above the tripple.

When I did my clip on mod, this is what I found out.....

Even if the clip ons are installed in front of the fork, because of the sweep back angle, the base of the grips are about an inch closer.
I got Swatt clip ons with 3.5" risers (under the triple) and my calculations told me I would end up about stock height. I didn't.
The measurements I took before and after showed me that even if the bar pinch position is "close" to stock, the base of
the grips are almost two inches lower. This is because of the downward bar angle combined with the sweep back.

Your bike has the 22mm bars with some rise, right?
If you use my estimate of a two inch drop, only because of the different angles - then you would have to find out which clip ons can provide a bar pinch position an inch higher than where your stock bars are. "My" two inch drop will then put you an inch lower than where you are. Ask again if I'm not being clear.

I have near-FHE, as I haven't put the parts together yet, so YMMV...

My forks are 900SS Showas, and they'll extend above the top triple about 2.25".  From what I recall about the SBK forks, they're somewhat shorter than that.  Like you, I will be locating the clip-ons above the top triple, and also want to approximate the position of the stock bars/grips.  I considered Tomaselli adjustable clip-ons, but wound up getting a set of Swatts with 2.5" rise (thank you Jeff at Monsterparts.)  Swatt measures from the center of the fork clamp to the center of the bar, FYI (this is from Bill Swatt, not hearsay.)  My calcs and measurements indicate that the bars will angle back slightly deeper than stock, but otherwise will be very close, a shade lower than stock.  This is assuming they are mounted flush to the triple top surface.  I have some adjustment room vertically - you may or may not with the 998 forks.  I figured I could tweak the vertical location to get close to the stock position.

The 3.5" rise Swatts will, I believe, put the grips quite a bit higher than the stock bars - if mounted above the triple.

Good luck!

I have the MotoWheels clip-on's with the 1.5'' rise mounted above the top triple tree.

With the bike lowered around 1'' up front and then the clip-on's above that the riding position is almost stock (maybe alittle lower). Gives a better look then with bars (my opinion) and covers up the fork tubes if you do want to lower the front (over if the clip-on's were below the tree)...

i had those same ones on my old 620  - it's a bit lower than stock, but not too bad
i still have the clip-ons if you want them - they aren't mint condition, but still usable (i sold the bike) - PM if you are interested

I had the same Motowheel clipon's on my 2003, 620 but with no rise. They felt awesome.

They are somewhat thin so it doesn't drop the front end all that much..

I believe that the SpeedyMoto high-boys end up at pretty much the same location as the stock bar. They do mount below the triple so the suspension is not altered. Two good things about these are that you can easily lower them and it cleans up the top. My plan is to go with the SM triple and high clip-ons as soon as I get some extra cash.
