Title: left side tipover - leaking gas
Post by: Privateer on May 28, 2009, 09:12:03 PM
2004 m620, 20600 miles.

so this afternoon I had a sidestand incident and the bike fell over while I was straddling it.  Frame slider and bar end mirror took almost all of the weight, as well as my left leg, with my foot pinned under the rear set.  Thank God I had friends with me or I don't know if I could've gotten out from under it.

No damage other than some scratches on the napoleon mirror and the frame slider, probably the left exhaust.

I got home and didn't think anything of it, but a couple hours later the wife was complaining of a gasoline smell in the garage.  Now, another 3 hours later it still smells like gas.  I propped up the tank and found some some gasoline dampness on the wire harness that connects to the low fuel sensor (592.1.015.1A in the parts diagram, fuel system, drawing 036).  I wiped up what  could reach and figure I'll check it in the morning to see if it's damp again.

I figured maybe some gas sloshed out and down the overflow or something on the tipover.  The tank never impacted the ground.  This had happened after about 4 hours of riding, another hour on the highway home, and now it's about 6 hours after I parked in the garage.  But 7 hours seems like a long time for that fuel to work its way out.  No gasoline drips on the garage floor, but the house from the breather to the airbox had some dampness as well.

Anything to be concerned about?

thanks in advance.

well this morning the garage and even the downstairs reeked of gasoline.  Stuck my hand up underneath the back of tank where the hoses and such are and came away wet with gas.  propped the tank, same thing, gas on that wire harness and can't figure out where it's coming from.

this sucks.

propped the tank, turn the ignition key to ON. This will start the fuel pump pumping. Try to observe if there is any leak from the hoses.

If the tank was full when the bike went over you may have cracked the weld at the hinge.  If that is the case you need to get it brazed to stop the leak.

thank you both.

wasn't a full tank of gas, probably 2/3's.

Propped tank and turned key, no spurtin fuel after two attempts.  wiped down everything with a towel and let it sit for 30 mins.  Just went back out and sure enough looks like the hinge is leaking.

Pretty much how my life works.  Everything has been going great so it was about time for life to kick me in the nuts.

great.  just make the beast with two backsing great.

little help, please.  to drain the tank, which hose do I need to disconnect?  Is there an easy way to do it without spilling gas everywhere?  there's a lot going on under there and I'd rather not just pull stuff apart hoping I'm doing it right.

thanks

Easiest way to do it is siphon most all of the gas out, preferably with a squeeze-bulb siphon, commonly available at boat shops.

The delivery line (marked 'M' for Mandata) won't leak much when you pull it off.

The return line (marked 'R') will flow like gangbusters.

If you make a 'plug' with a short piece of plugged fuel line, and are *quick*, you can pull the line and then plug it without spilling too much.

well I siphoned off most of the gas.  Removed the overflow lines and going to try and pull the others after dinner.  I can't make out which is marked M or R, so just gonna pull them off and hope for the best.

First time I ever siphoned gas, tfs.

Should be a sticker on the bottom of the tank, and little white plastic rings on the lines, that are marked.

anyone know if there's a trick to getting the supply/return fuel lines off?  I can't seem to pull them off after loosening the clamps all the way.  I also didn't want to tear them or make matters worse.

thanks.

Try giving them a twist before you pull

hmm ok, tried that but I'll keep trying.

Oh, Nick, thanks for the tip on the delivery/return.. I finally did find a white rubber band with an M on one of the lines, it was just down a ways on the line so it wasn't immediately evident.

alright.  progress.  Seems that letting them sit overnight without the clamps on them let them loosen up.  The delivery line was pretty easy.  The supply line I had to coax a little bit.  Didn't spill too much gas.  Getting that little bit of gas out that won't drain seems to be the next challenge.  Tried turning it upside down and that got most of it, but not all.

Good times, good times.

Now that it's all apart, I wish I had more projects to do.

I sometimes put a little WD40 on tight lines. Otherwise, using a flat blade screw driver and putting the side of the head against the nipple and using the screw driver to kind of pull the hose back, alternating sides your pulling on to get it off evenly. This can kind of chew up old hoses though.

well tank is off to Nick/Speeddog's more than capable hands.

my bike looks sad with the tank and seat off of it.  That said, the seat is off getting re-upholstered.  Pics when it returns.  Decided not to do the oil breather tank removal.

DO IITTTTT. The rear shock looks so awesome without that big turd there.

with the jury still out on the benefits/impacts of removing the breather tank, I'm leaving it for now.
