If you're looking for 1098 parts why not just contact him and ask some questions?  Shouldn't take too long to discern.

I don't live near astoria, so if you do just make a quick phone call to the local police and see if they have a stolen 1098 if they do refer them to the seller and maybe you will help out a fellow Ducatista.

say youre looking for a 1098 swing arm. If it was stolen they probably wouldn't want to off the frame right away bc of the vin number.

Im not looking for a 1098, i just have craigslist ducati on my hotlinks (looking for a 749s).

I was posting since it looks like hes selling everything but the frame. I dont know, could be legit or not, could be stolen. Should i ask the popo if they got a stolen bike? I mean ,its plausible that its a race take off. But the email is what made me go why would someone make a new email just to sell something on CL?

Amazing.   The Ducati Monster Forum detective service.  Some people are making a lot of assumptions.

Before I get flamed, let me explain my thinking.   Say you are selling some parts on Jethro&Elliemaeslist.    You start to get emails (a lot of people create an email address just for selling their stuff, just look at Ebay), someone posted on a forum that they think your stuff is stolen.   The cops call, they want you to prove that it isn't.  Would that piss you off?   How about a bunch of emails from people that you don't even know calling you a thief?  What if your stuff is perfectly legitimate?   Would that bother you that someone is spreading some crap about your stuff, and quite possibly killed the sale of some of it?   Look at the prices.   I would think that stolen stuff would be like $40 for a set of wheels, not $1550.   Would a thief have the stock rims and the aftermarket?   Or stock and race tanks?

Just my .02 cents.

Hey mods, you're watching.  What do you think?

craigslist has the email anonymizer built-in.. you don't have to create a new alias for any reason.

My point is that it isn't a very good idea to label something as stolen, and that's exactly what this is, when there are no indicators of it being stolen, such as an owner that is missing a 1098 around there, the cops, looking for a stolen 1098 (I've heard that when they aren't on Myspace looking for sexual predators, they actually look for stolen stuff there), or abnormally low prices, as is the norm for stolen stuff.   Just someone broadcasting that they think this stuff is stolen.

Does anyone else have a problem with someone making accusations without knowing anything about the actual parts?  Why don't you email the guy, or like someone did to me when I was selling a Toyota truck they thought I was asking too much for, keep flagging it?

He Man is asking for people's opinions about whether its stolen and what he should do. No one is saying "ZOMG its definitely stolen! Go get the guy!!!".

People have posted that it seems kinda fishy with the email the guy gave. Also, you have ZERO idea if there is an owner missing a 1098 in that area. There very well could be, just as there very well could be cops looking for it.

Are we now not allowed to voice our opinions? Can we not say that we think it may be stolen and can we not try to give some advice?

You're right, I have ZERO idea.   Neither does anyone else here.   And you want to say, you think it may be stolen.   Where do you get this idea?   It might be stolen.  But I might be Perry Mason.  I might not.   But it appears that some people are trying to interfere with the guys sale by saying they think his stuff is stolen.  Any particular reason?  A funny email address?  Kind of like Corndog67?   Why would he have all the original parts?

In my opinion, you don't call someone a thief unless you have some kind of evidence to the fact.   I don't see any evidence.    As for what the OP should do, in my opinion, nothing.  It's not his call.  It's not my call.  It's not your call.   If it's stolen, it will probably catch up with him.  If it's not, this is a major disservice to him trying to sell his parts.

What harm would it cause to check in with the police? If the guy didn't steal a bike, then whats the problem?

And do you honestly think one thread on this forum is gonna ruin his sale? Anyone who actually reads the thread (and anyone with common sense) would be able to figure it out on their own.

Christ.  [roll]

Oh and I think "corndog", even when in reference to food, is a slur to LSU fans. You should change your handle.

Christ.  You're defending calling someone a thief, with no evidence.

Never mind.

Hey Speeddog, Painter, Bigiain, do you think this is fair to the parts guy?   Do you see any reason to label the guy a possible thief?

Has anyone actually called the guy a thief? Most people say "it looks fishy" or "this sounds stolen". NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE, hence why we "think" it might be stolen. As for the prices being too high for it to be stolen, maybe he's not your typical make a quick buck thief. Maybe he actually knows what he has and knows what the market will bear. Thieves can't do research?

Lighten up, everyone.

from an admin position I thought of moving this to parts for sale section, but as nobody here is looking to buy or looking to sell it was just a 'sit around and talk about it' sort of post.  I tried to steer it away from where it went early on with my comment in a polite way.

from a personal position, I think whether intended or not, it comes across as a little craigslist boyscoutish.  If I lost a 1098 or I were shopping for plastic I'd be interested, but absent that I've got other things to keep me busy.

yea, but some spammers just take the craigslist email, which directly forwards to YOUR email for a period of time, and bomb the shit out of it on a daily basis with cheap viagra knockoff emails...

i had zero spam in my inbox until i posted something up on CL... Now i have shit daily...
Blows.

the craigslist alias dies when the ad dies or you remove the ad.

i use the same email for CL postings and have very little spam issues -- have used the same email for years.

If you are getting viagra bombing then remove the ad -- alias dies immediately.

have you ever emailed someone on CL and never gotten a response back? it could of been a post to collect emails, thats how most of them work, except you reveal your email and get continously bombed.

and corndog, i only have 2 posts on this thread, and i think the 2nd one is pretty clear on my intentions. Jbubble never defended anyone calling him a thief because NO ONE CALLED HIM A THIEF OUTRIGHT! [bang]

IMO i think the parts would be priced lower if stolen.  Also there seems to be parts from different bikes on there.  There are 2 fuel tanks and a ohlins rear from an "S" model and forks from a base model.  I don't think it's stolen.
