Just a heads up for those of you with weekend rides, 84 between 35 and 280 has a lot of sand in a large number of places, no doubt due to the recent rain. The road is downright dangerous, both going up and down, so be careful.


The rest of 84 and pescadero are all clear though, save for the massive amounts of deer.



We need a dangerous roads sticky.

Is it stinky with  [leo] down there like Marin and SF these days?

They're like starved jackles these days.

I've seen no cops in the Peninsula twisties for a couple weeks. They seem more prevalent during the nicest of days, when there are more squids out.

I took it a week ago and it was fine, except for a paving project with one way traffic control going on about halfway up. :P

I've seen a few but primarily on the weekends only.

Another warning - there is a bicycle road race on Saturday June 13 in the morning.  The route consists of Pescadero Creek Rd., Stage Rd., and 84 between Stage and Pescadero.  Expect lots of bicycles on those roads between 8 am - 1 pm that day, I'd recommend avoiding that route during that time.

Also this weekend is the La Honda fair. The area is already FULL of cages, and there is a significant LEO presence. 84 looks pretty jacked up this weekend.

Looks like the lower part of 236 (from Jamison Creek south) will be closed for a few weeks.

Not bad, really.  Just the usual junk in some of the turns.  Keep your eye's out for ranchers pulling trailers slowly.  There were some sections where the road needs work so be advised.

84 East of 35 in the twisties.

Seems to be A LOT of new tar filling the cracks that gets pretty gooey in the Sun.
I hit an abundant patch of it in a not particularly aggressive turn and my rear tire stepped out enough to cause me to say, "Woe Nellie." :o
Recommending missing the big patches of tar.


84 West of 35 to the Pacific remains one of the finest pieces of riding available to man. The bottom near the coast is newly paved  [thumbsup]

For whatever reason there seem to be a lot more tar snakes heading downhill (towards 280) than uphill (towards Skyline).

Stage Rd has several large piles of loose gravel (I'm talking a few inches high) as well as fresh chip seal.  Most of them are in the corners.

There are a few small warning signs but they don't cover every spot.  Be careful.

84 West from 280-35 about halfway up, major spillage, it continues up from there all the way to 35. I would avoid the road, or take it realllll easy-this one is fresh folks!

84 from 280 to skyline is LEO infested today. Also there is a rodeo going on in La Honda, so there are a lot of large pickups (rigs, if you will) with large horse trailers. These guys cut the double yellow often.


Plenty of ploice on the bottom of page mill as well, for you goat trail peeps.

Upcoming roadwork/delays on Hwy 84:

They put up signs yesterday, there will be roadwork and possible delays through Sept 28 on highway 84 from 6 am to 6 pm. This affects a section of road between Alice's and West Old La Honda Rd.

I expect there will be one-way traffic control for some of that time.

Oh lordy, this is like the Bay Bridge closing for squids. They'll all be in Marin and on Mines now.  [roll]

There are now also signs for roadwork/delays through Nov 1 on the east part of 84 (6 am - 6 pm), this affects the section between Alice's and the 15 mph hairpin a bit west of Portola. [roll]

I haven't seen anything affecting traffic yet but I doubt that will last. :-\

On a positive note today they put up "Cross Traffic Ahead" signs and re-painted lane markers at the Pescadero/Alpine junction. [thumbsup]

101 between Santa Rosa and Windsor is undergoing major work and is VERY dangerous at the moment...in fact it made the front page of the local paper last week.  The worst hazard I encountered is pavement that is uneven by about 2 inches in the slow lane and the seams run diagonally to the right at a slight angle in many places so it is tricky to cross and impossible to avoid.  Old Redwood Hwy is a good alternative in the meantime but if you must take 101 the fast lane was much safer this weekend...but the situation changes daily of course.

Yikes! There were diagonal pavement height changes when I went through there a while back, but they were only a half inch or so. Hitting a 2 inch "edge trap" the wrong way can seriously dump you on your butt. Hope they get that fixed soon!

Probably will be cleared by the time anyone else here gets there, but there were two fallen trees on Alpine this morning, fully covering the westbound side and partially covering the eastbound side.  I had to ride over part of one of them. :o

Dang it woman, this is a thread for road reports. Alpine ain't no road, it's a damn goat trail they spilt asphalt on.

Hi All, did a ride from S.F. to Mendocino and back again yesterday, the "Edge Trap" is very real, (just before Airport Blvd. exit Southbound 101) and extremely dangerous, my front tire got caught in the very same spot, call it an act of Devine providence, or just dumb luck, when I got stuck in the trap, it violently bucked the front-end and wobbled radically, so much so that I thought for sure I was a goner... Well, I'm still here! I wish I would have read this thread before making my way. The lanes are loaded with potential "Gotcha's" Be careful all.....my two point three cents worth.

Side note.... 128 is under construction in spots.... be careful there, too!

There is also a bad edge trap on 101 northbound starting at Peninsula Ave (San Mateo), not sure how far north it goes.

It's in between the two left lanes, is all new pavement and would probably be difficult to see at night.

Pescadero Rd
North after the township has multiple construction zones that continue all the way to Alice's @ Skyline. They are cutting trenches across the road in several spots. Both directions move into single lanes in several spots.

I haven't seen any work being done on Pescadero in a while, just the little bumps they left behind.  84 east of Skyline seems to be done too.  There's just the little bit with the traffic light left on 84 west of Skyline (between Old La Honda and 35).

Edit 10/26/09:

The traffic light was turned off and both lanes opened today. [thumbsup]  

There's still some crud on the road in that corner, so just be cautious.

Highway 84, heading east from La Honda, about the 3rd or 4th left-hander after leaving town, there is a spot where there is always water running across the road.

In the last few days that spot has become deceptively slippery...my car with dynamic traction control slipped on it yesterday and today, and I wasn't even pushing it.  I think there must be a bit patch of moss growing.

It's not nearly as bad going the other direction.

There was snow in the mountains this morning.

There is now moss, perpetual wet, and quite a bit of gravel in the corners on western parts of 84 and Pescadero.

Riding out here should probably be avoided.

There are occasional patches in the centerline in parts of west Marin. Keep sharp!

Lots of roadwork on Laguna Honda Blvd in SF, basically between Clarendon and the Woodside/Dewey intersection.

In places the surface is really broken up. :P  Be careful, especially at night.

Hey gang, what with the likely break in the weather tomorrow some of you may be doing the Marin loop. I just got back from a quick Stinson loop and you're better off taking the coast. Tam has the usual water running across the road in the normal places, some gravel, a bit of mud in one corner, and a bunch of tree bark and other crapola on the centerline.  The coast route is much cleaner and more likely to be dry - there are still a couple of places with running water, and a bit of gravel, but nothing really annoying.

BTW, I had the traction control on the "Big Pussy" setting and the thing was flashing like the self-destruct sequence in Star Trek.  I'm still not sure if that's good, or just a big distraction, but hey, I didn't crash.  ;D

There is snow and ice on skyline. Enough to actually accumulate. There is so much debris on Pescadero one cannot verify pavement still exists. I'd avoid riding out here.

This same corner is now coated with mud and is extremely slick, even for the XCountry.

Most back-road twisties have fresh green grass growing in the cracks and crevasses with a thin layer of dried mud over everything.

all that and also some slimy green moss out on the edges on the shadier roads (like St. Helena RD)...

84 is nice and clear now. Dry too. Just past La Honda as one approaches Pescadero Creek Road, they are doing some lane work-the road now curves differently, so take it a bit slower'n normal.

Pescadero Creek Road is wet and green with moss, and still very slippery. Overall, Peninsula looks rider friendly again, though it is still cold.

Pescadero /Skyline

the first thing I saw was a BMW getting fished out of the weeds and a guy in his torn T-SHIRT  :o standing there looking stupid. 

Dry but dusty and still quite slippery.  A couple of moving water crossings to watch out for on both roads. I lost traction a couple of times on all the dust and dried moss on the roads. 

The construction on Pescadero is done but they left grooves in the road.  >:( 

I went for a ride for the first time in months after the European part of my 'round the world in 80 days' trip. Man was I rusty. I stopped by Mr I.  and Somegirl's place on the way through but they hid In the basement as usual.   

Jeez, beemer guys riding in t-shirts? What is the world coming to...

Was that on Sunday?  We thought we saw you riding by as we were walking the dogs.  I had waved but no response.

You know on weekends I'm in the garage out back right? That driveway goes for like, a mile-ride around back  ;)


Roads seem to be all clear these days. Current issue is a lot of police presence around 35/84 and the squids.

Lots-o-mud at the end of Redwood road, Oakland side.

Anyone see the flipped Honda today? (4-17-10).  Wondering if the guy lived, from what I saw on the tow truck it did not like good.


Also, -1 for the twenty million flares and the ashes left behind all over the road from the 8 CHP I saw.

You know....the bay area is big and all-location would help?

TBH, if you would have seen this make the beast with two backsing honda, you would know what I was talking about.

Someone ran into a rock face on a.....scooter....today.

Also, I think the accident count from the limited time I was on that cop infested road was 6.  Ride safe.

They've repaved Hwy 1 in Marin in a coupla key spots.  Heading north, just past Bolinas, there were deep drop-offs on the right side of the road that were kinda hard to see.  Total ball-crushers.  They're now smooth.

Also, just north of Pt. Reyes, heading North, there used to be AWFUL pavement on the uphill right hander (about 1 mile up the road or so from Pt. Reyes).  If you didn't know it was there, it was easy to get caught out.  They've smoothed it over as well. 

tunitas creek road, decending from skyline.. beware..

gravel in the worst place and decending from skyline, there are no warning signs if you go west.. only ascending from 1 near the junctions.

blind turns into large patches on the down.. does not get any worse.. it is almost like they were left there intentionally.

most of the road looks fine, just patches here are there make it appear solid... nope.. wheels sliding all over.. even straights.....

road report 12/27/2010

Hwy1 Marin pretty dang good actually, though places in the trees like Dogtown is full of leaves and pretty wet.
        On the way there though, Mill Valley is wet.

HWY 1 south peninsula quite good as well.

84 pretty wet and draining

35 piles of pine needles and draining roads. Slime and dirt. Many section you must ride in the car tire tracks to avoid large sections of gravel and foliage.

On Panoramic hwy (Mt. Tam, Marin) there was a slide just past the Pantoll intersection, heading west. It has been cleared, but there was a huge mud patch yesterday. Hopefully the rin this week will wash it away. (and not cause any more slides!)

On a positive note: Skaggs Springs Road is warm and dry, litter free, and the tourists have all gone home.  I was out there on Monday at lunch time and I could have had a sammich on the asphalt. Beautiful out there.  I'm sure the weekend will be another story altogether.  Oh well.   ;D

Cummings Skyway and Crockett Blvd in Contra Costa are getting repaved 10/21 to 10/31. Probably chip seal, mind the gravel.

It is now raining. That is all.

There are deer. Everywhere.  :o

Highway 20 on 7 mile hill (just east of willits)

Resurfaced and man is it smooth! No bumps at all and you can lean it over till the foot pegs scrape.

Better get on this before it starts raining or caltrans decides to dig up the pavement and patch it all up.

If gravel is your thing. If you just get enough sliding out in the curves, this is your chance to ride Skyline BLVD. crapped out with gravel under construction from 92 to 84.

It still sucks but its rideable. Big patches of gravel still here and there. Watch it.

Not quite the road report but more of a ride report. The road (Mendocino county Hwy 1) was wet in a few spots but mostly OK. Two mior traffic delays, ie Red stop lights at road construction sites, they are rebuilding a bridge at Irish beach and a road realignment abot 10 miles north.



I've been down in Mendo the last few days. Yesterday an old riding buddy lent me his 900 Super Sport to go for a ride down to Pt Arena. Three of us rode down there together, Mitch and Tommy both rode Cagiva Grand Canyons (which also have the Ducati 900 2V engine but with 750 heads). We paid a visit to Dave @ The Zen House (http://www.thezenhouse.net/)
(Who also owns a Cagiva grand canyon) and talked bikes.

He has an old 125 Moto Guzzi in there and an old Triumph that we were looking at. After that we rode back up to Mendocino. The Super Sport is pretty fast on a public road. I miss shifted about a dozen times though because Mitch has all of his bikes set up for GP shifting, so I had to think about what I was doing.

When we Arrived at Pattersons Pub (http://www.pattersonspub.com/mendo_home.html) for lunch, a guy came up to us and asked if something was broken. He had tools in his truck and was willing to fix the Dry clutch on the spot.  ;D I showed him the open clutch and he was mesmerized.

Next time Mitch says I should ride either the Paul Smart or the 996. I gave that some thought as I rode home on the old K100
I think I may keep the monster down here and get something else to ride up in Klamath Falls. My thoughts have been on the soon to be released Hyper Strada but that Grand canyon is exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for so I may look for one of those instead.

The weather can't be better.

Last weekend did a loop from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos, Morgan Hill, over Hecker Pass to Moss Landing for lunch.  Group included a Hypermotard, 999R, 749, BMW GS and a 997 Carrera.

Roads are clear and clean with traffic at a minimum as we are outside of tourist season.  Still some damp/shaded sections on the leeward side of Hecker Pass but easily identifiable. 

Great time to get out and ride.
