Title: Ducati Featured on TLC's American Chopper Last Night - RANT
Post by: Monster Dave on June 05, 2009, 08:08:27 AM
Ok, so last night I was channel surfing and saw a preview for last night's new episode of American Chopper and it was going to highlight the Monster that they modded and the opening of their Ducati dealership.

So the episode started and the first (and beautiful scene) shows the Duc Truck in all it's glory parked out in front of OCC. Cut to the unloading and uncrating of the Monster 1100.  Mind you all of this took place in a matter of about 60 seconds on the show. The first words out of Paul Sr.'s mouth were "Wow, what is that, Ducati....is that Italian or something?"

[bang]

...I kid you not. That's almost verbatim what he said. Then they just highlighted in about 15 seconds what they were planning for the Monster and that was the last you saw of it until the last minute or two of the show.

There I was, looking forward to seeing the actual fabrication that would be done on a Monster when I found myself waiting and waiting only see a chopper built for BIC pens.

You know, sometimes you know what you should expect is probably what you'll end up with, but I had honestly hoped to see some actual work done on the Monster; even if (IMHO) it wasn't done very tastefully. I'm sure that fabrication was all outsourced.

At least out of the few short minutes with Ducati coverage, they did in the end say that Ducati is and I quote "One of the best, if not the best at building sport bikes."

IMHO= [puke]

Oh well. That's just my morning rant.

the reason for no fabrication coverage is that it was all bolt-ons [bang]
the only thing that looks fab'd is the hideaus cowl and paint

I think this is a good thing. It tells me that Ducati wont be a large part of the show going forward.. Maybe they'll never even mention them again and we can all pretend to forget this travesty happened...  [drink]

I would have been bummed too...I think you are also correct that they probably didn't do any of the work, they basically just put some aftermaket bling and a paint job, nothing really fabricated like they do to choppers...and what is with that ugly tail, looks like a Suzuki tail from a busa..I'm with you  [puke]

Yep, I saw it too.  It seems like a strange partnership to me.

As far as the bike, aren't those all DP parts, perhaps with the exception of the belly pan, and that hideous seat cowl?

I always expect the worst, and usually I'm not disappointed.

I guess that I was just really looking forward to something that was impossible.

Next time, I'll just go hang out at the local Duc shop here and watch maintenance work be done on my own Monster.

to expect more of poo is nothing more than wasted energy.

The Bike was horrible, the show last night was horrible and at the end the two reps from Ducati seemed way out of place.

Instead of trying to make it look as if though Ducati is welcome in their shop, can't they just come out and say they are hurting for business and that is why they are a Ducati dealer.  I see OCC going out of Business in the near future. Once Vinnie left the show took a major downhill turn.

Nah, Pops and his real crew do some pretty nice structural fabrication work, that's where the money to start the chopper thing came from.  Always room in the industry for good fabricators.

I'm thinking the chopper building thing has just about run its course.

That thing is terrible to look at.  Though I didn't like all of the 1100s that were done for the M1100 dealer challenge, none made me say 'Ick' out loud, like this did.  Lame concept (spiders?  Really?)  Slap-dash bolt on work.

I do like the silver AMG one cruiser they did.  It's a complete and thought out job.

Paul Sr. said "Ducati what is that" in jest... He was kidding... As they were uncrating he also stated that Ducati is pretty much the only Sport bike manufacturer that he likes, because they make the best bikes or some blasphemous statement like that from such a Triumph lover that he is... Also the Spiderman bike was a build for Marvel Comics, they wanted a Venom bike made out of the 1100s...

considering they only had about 3-4 days I think the Venom or "black spiderman", as they kept calling it,  bike came out pretty good.

Is the other guy in the banner on that site the kid who was on the show around the same time as Vinnie? I think his name was Cody?

...never mind, I answered my own question:

Funny how they dance around saying that they started with OCC.

I always wondered what happened to Vinnie.

3 or 4 days?  That's all?  Hmm ok.  Not so much can be done in that little time.  So what was the rush?

I could be wrong, but from what I got out of watching the show last night they were given the bike on wed and the unveiling/ dealer opening was on sunday.

I watched it too in hopes of it being a primarily Ducati based episode. Opps.
My biggest complaint was when Paul Sr. says, “well Ducati isn't really my cup of tea, but then…” Well then Paul, why, as the owner of OCC did you decide to get a Ducati franchise? Guess the lucrative chopper market and all the free hand outs from the corporations are drying up now? No matter how many times I see that show he always comes off as a big, loudmouthed, bulldog. No personality, no class, and certainly not the kind of guy I want to buy a bike from and support his business.

I went on a group ride that they held a few weeks after the big anniversary party and I can tell you the guys I met from there are nice guys who are into bikes and ride well. The “venom” bike has it points, and in person it's not too bad, but certainly not a beautiful bike by any means and essentially, in the end it's just a catalog bike, not unlike a lot of the choppers they've built.

The showroom there is nice and new and has all the neat goodies and bike and signs, but… I'm still not sold on the OCC-Ducati marriage. I can see why Ducati did it, but, well, it just didn't feel right standing in that showroom looking at Ducs surrounded by the 10 years of gaudy, non functional choppers that they've built. It looked like the guys from Dcauti NA felt the same way watching them in that final clip.

The worse part  is dealerships like this can, and do, hurt well run smaller dealerships who have been carrying the brand since they were nothing more then a very tiny spot on the American market. Please reward the people who've stood by you and helped build the brand that Ducati is today. Don't bend the rules to allow new kids to play in the sandbox at the punishment of your old guard.

Oh well.

Having done some design work and metal fab (not motorcycles) I can say it's harder than it looks. That being said these guys (OCC) are mediocre fabricators at best and could benefit greatly from hiring a designer (no thanks, not fishing for a job). They have had a few inspired ideas but how many times can you role out that same old frame. The show is more about them than the bikes. Too much disfunction and too little of the bikes for my taste. Of course Superbikes and the New American Thunder don't really satisfy either. I don't begrudge these guys their success, good for them, I'd just like to see other builders get a similar treatment.

At this point I'm more interested in the Boutique Paul Jr. and his sweet looking Girl toy are building.

is it just me or are those newer 1100 pipes the ugliest thing since Rosie Odonnell?  I had been wondering what happened to cody, I hope their shop does ok.
