Title: Oil leak
Post by: Cucciolo on June 05, 2009, 08:14:37 PM
Hey Guys!

My bike has developed a tiny oil leak from the left side of the starter. Easy fix by the Tech ! FIXED!

I cant tell much from your photo.  I would suggest cleaning the area so you can see where the leak is from.  If needed an aerosol powder will help.  As far as repairing the leak yourself, welll, without knowing your skills and what tools you have to work with, dunno.  The leak from the black plug is more a nuisance than a real problem.  If it bothers you enough, you can either buy anew O ring for the stock plug or an aftermarket plug

There's a gasket between the engine case and the starter.  Sometimes, it leaks.  I wouldn't buy another one, but put some grey silicone sealant on the existing one.  Good enough.

There are 3 bolts which hold the starter on.  So yes, there is one behind the left hand engine cover (as you're sitting on the bike).  Not much fun to replace...

I would think about two hours labor, since it took me about that long to change my ignition pick-ups.  When I changed If you are bringing the bike to a shop, let them tell you where the leak is.  If you tell them what to fix and you are wrong, you pay the second time.  They make the mistake, they pay.  The reason why I suggested you clean again is oil leaks can originate elsewhere and travel.

I guess I never really looked at the starter, What where the engineers at Ducati thinking? That would be a real PITA if you have to pull the case just to pull the starter.
