Title: Cable Ties and Cable Tie Alternatives
Post by: Speedbag on June 06, 2009, 05:36:53 AM
Anybody know when the cable (or 'zip') tie made its first appearance?

And, are there alternatives to them out there?

Here's the deal. I'm entering the final stages of a bike project that needs to look like it could have time warped out of the late 60's/early '70s. It's about as minimalist as it gets, and everything is very visible. I'm going to need to keep wiring in check and since it too is very visible, I'm having trouble bringing myself to use boring black cable ties. Unless they date back 40 years....

Wrap the harness with black cloth tape.

It'll be like the old "friction" tape they used before vinyl electrical tape.

I think velcro should be that old too but I'm not positive.

Damn Dave...you mean that thing actually might see the light of day sometime soon? Won't that cause your garage to fall into some uncontrolled spin that will throw off the balance of the universe and cause a black hole to develop where you garage once was??!!

And on topic, I like the fabric tape idea...

Idk what they did on the old bikes but on all of my ancient cars, I've had metal spring style C-shaped clips you could slip the harness through. Would be period, I suspect.

Velcro is a WWII era fastener.

Stainless steel zip ties can look retro.

If you really wanna go way back you can use waxed lacing cord for the looms, can look pretty neat if you're careful, the looms in the old telephone exchanges I used to work in had this.

Yes, and I'm terrified of the potential consequences.  [laugh]

Hmm, I'm sorta liking the lacing cord suggestion above....
