Title: Incident in Bologna Post by: goldFiSh on June 08, 2009, 04:17:10 AM Hi All,
Last Friday whilst riding in Bologna, Jukie was involved in a motor vehicle accident, which has resulted in her needing surgery to remove her ruptured spleen. She is OK, and on the road to recovery, though she will be hospitalised for another week in Bologna, and will hopefully have the green light to fly back home in a fortnight, but they're not really too sure yet. I don't have the complete details, but I know that a vehicle decided to cross four lanes to get to an exit in front of her, and then stopped. She tried to evade as best she could, but really had no where to go, clipping the back of the stopped car. Mark recalls that she didn't fall too heavily but thinks she got caught up in the handlebars on the way down, causing her injury. Mark goes on to tell us that she's made a good start on the road recovery from surgery, and that her spirits are starting to lift. Apparently she's (more than) a little fired up about not getting to the factory and museum, so we'd all agree that's a good sign of the Jukie we all know and love is on the mend Our thoughts and very best wishes go out to both Julie and Mark. Being involved in an accident is bad, no question, but watching it happen to your partner in front of you; well I can't even begin to imagine. Julie, all the best for a speedy recovery to get you home as soon as possible. Of course, we're offering anything we can do to help. Mark's suggested that the best thing we can do right now is to use this thread to let her know that we're thinking of her and cheer her up. We're working out how to get the info to her bed - they don't have internet access in the hospital, but we wont let that stop us! As you can well image, Mark is run off his feet dealing with everything, and he's asked not to try to call. So the best way to offer your support is through this thread, which well get to both of them in the next day or so. (oh, and apparently she wants a big BBQ on her return, Dock, time to fire up the portable webers I think!) Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Big T on June 08, 2009, 04:19:15 AM Big T sends big big hugs to Jukie and Mark.......
Thinking of you both and a speedy recovery Julie..... [thumbsup] PS: The Virgins send lots and lots of hugs as well...... Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: goldFiSh on June 08, 2009, 04:22:10 AM Hey Jukie, Nemo's hanging out for you to return, he needs more cuddles!
All the best for a speedy recovery [thumbsup] Lots of love from goldFiSh, Broni, Nemo and Dory Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: mattyvas on June 08, 2009, 04:34:56 AM Jukie I heard about this under hushed voice just this afternoon (Monday 8th June).
I feel terrible for you but am happy to know you are recovering well. Do know we are all thinking of you both and will all be here to welcome you back. Best wishes for your return. Matty... Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Grug on June 08, 2009, 04:35:58 AM That's awful. Glad to hear she's on the road to recovery. For what it's worth I'd strongly suggest Mark visit a few of the bakeries in the middle of Bologna - they have the tastiest little cakes and pastries you will ever try in your life (helpful stuff for anyone cooped up in hospital).
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Andy55 on June 08, 2009, 05:11:21 AM Oh man , upsetting news! Julie all my best wishes to you mate , hang in there. My thoughts are with you. XOXO
Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: heatherp on June 08, 2009, 06:00:28 AM Hiya Julie & Mark
Bit stumped for words. Whether to be pissed off at the driver or just glad to still be alive I guess is the question. I gather you were enjoying yourselves immensely up until that point. (if not, why not!) On the positive just means another trip to be planned sometime in the future. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and back home soon so you can both relax. Cheers Heather Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: craigo on June 08, 2009, 07:29:16 AM OMFG! Unbelievable news. I had a terrible sinking feeling as soon as I saw the thread title, I'm just really glad to hear that Julie is still kicking and on the road to recovery (as it is). It would be hard enough dealing with something like this if it was local for Julie and Mark, it must make it an order of magnitude harder being overseas. I guess at the end of the day even though this is an awful thing to happen, you have to remain positive (and it sounds like you both are); If anyone can tough something like this out, it's you two..
Let us know if there is anything we can do from down under to help out with recovery (want us to urgent courier Vegemite or something?). Gah! I don't even know where to start! I know I feel a little helpless here on the otherside of the world right now. Anything that we can help out with, let us know. Steph and I send hugs and our best wishes and look forward to seeing both you guys get home safe and sound ASAP! Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Betty on June 08, 2009, 11:57:47 AM Guys ... thank you all for the warm wishes and offers for help.
The Boss is doing pretty well - she has been allowed to eat something for the first time today ... the little things mean a lot in situations like this. One of the doctors suggested this evening she will back on the bike in no time. The whole belly region is pretty sore but as she improves she is starting to notice a few more of the minor bruises ... hip, elbow, etc - luckily she was wearing her new custom made leathers (for which she is vey grateful). We have a Ducati bandana tied to the overhead thingy that she pulls herself up on over the bed ... I have dubbed it 'the single sided swingarm'. With certain members of staff it seems to have eased the language barrier a little. She said to say Hi to everybody and also to thank you for the support. It means a lot to know that such a loose bunch of misfits care so much. I will try and use this thread to keep you up to date but forgive me if I am not quite on the ball. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: CairnsDuc on June 08, 2009, 12:27:05 PM Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, to see a rider down thread is never good thing.
Get well soon Jukie [thumbsup] Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: brimo on June 08, 2009, 01:06:17 PM What a thing to happen and on your holidays too. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Crashes SUCK.... Get well soon girl.... :-* Ita Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Betty on June 09, 2009, 04:27:41 AM Just another quick update.
Julie said to say Hi and thanks for all the love and best wishes. She said it will be hugs and kisses all-round when she gets back. Not sure she will be running and jumping into the arms of the unsuspecting (which some of you know is her usual greeting) but I am sure you will all know when she is back. Anyway Julie is doing well - they gave her a vaccination today for general immunity and she had the male nurse laughing as she kept saying 'no not in my bum'. They recommend that without the spleen she should get a booster every 5 years and a flu shot every year but other than that she should be fine. With all the drips that she has been given she is starting to fill up with fluid a bit I reckon ... but she does get up and walk the halls now so hopefully that will help. She is also carrying a bit of air ... she is learning to fart again and has been passing the time with rating her achievements on a 1-10 scale [clap]. As you can tell she is getting back to normal [laugh]. I may bore you all again with more gory details later, but thank you all for your support. Mark EDIT: Oh yeah and please don't be offended if I don't respond to all your PMs personally I have received quite a few (thank you everyone!) Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: techno on June 09, 2009, 04:29:17 AM Damn. Sorry to hear of your crash but glad to hear you came through OK. Get well and get back home soon.
Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Big T on June 09, 2009, 04:40:13 AM Hi all
Hey after talking to Goldfish and liaising with Betty I have organized a cake to be delivered to Julie in hospital from all the Aussie DMFers. Was going to send flowers but Betty said she suffers from hay fever so the last thing we wanted was Jukie bursting her stitches with a sneeze. So cake has been ordered for delivery through Interflora. As for cost I have it covered. But if you want to donate just PM and we will sort it out. Big T PS: Betty get a piece of cake into your good self as well..... Got to keep your strength up to handle that cage tigress till she gets back on the Monster... [popcorn] Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Ita on June 09, 2009, 04:58:08 AM So it's true....

Are we surprised by that! Hmmm no, but we are pleased it's happening. Means she is on the mend for sure. Big T, top job will buzz you to pitch in so $$$ Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: goldFiSh on June 09, 2009, 05:38:50 AM Same for me Trev. In fact, I'm just going to PM you about an arbitrary amount of cash, and anything surplus to what you need can go toward the BBQ she wants us to throw upon her return. Hows that?

paul. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Betty on June 10, 2009, 03:30:36 AM Thanks again everybody. Another quick update:
A certain little package arrived today which was a huge surprise for her. The fruit cake was emblazoned with the words 'Greetings from Australia' along with the southern cross and federation star. The cake and card made her a little teary and she admitted to missing you guys heaps. When I got to the hospital this morning she had already been up and about making a nuisance of herself (no surprises there [roll]). Then came the good news ... she is being released (I me discharged) tomorrow - so the cake was timed to perfection. Bloody brilliant Trev, well done mate! She has been sharing the cake around with the staff who have thankfully realised that she won't tolerate polite refusals. The cake was quite a novelty for them ... fruit cake with a super sweet icing ... but the initial apprehension quickly dissipated on tasting some. From what I have seen Julie has managed to soften up quite a few of the staff over the last few days ... their English has improved a lot more than our Italian [cheeky] Now we just need to sort out where we go from here. The travel agent has tentatively booked flights for Friday week which will hopefully allow enough time for her to recover for the flight. The hotel I have been in has had free internet (we have stayed in 10 different places in Italy and this is the first to offer that) so it has been awesome, particularly under the circumstances. Internet access may be bit harder to come by from now on ... we may be headed back to a place where we saw an internet cafe advertising €1.50 for 5 mins (approx. $A36/hr at that rate :o). Julie just wants to get home and see everybody, I reckon that barbie will become a high priority on her return. Thank you all once again for your support. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Big T on June 10, 2009, 04:08:34 AM Great news Betty...... [thumbsup]
And glad the cake was a hit...... Your never quite sure how a "cake" will turn out in some foreign land.... [popcorn] Give Jukie a big Big T hug and the Virgins send you big hugs as well........ 8) Looking forward to having you both back home for the barbie...... [thumbsup] Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: goldFiSh on June 10, 2009, 04:10:16 AM That's great news Mark. Glad that the Oz Monster crowd do a little to help the situation.
Now tell us, how can we help getting the pair of you to the factory tour and museum? I need to see pics of the pair of you next to the line of Bayliss and Corser SBK's and of course the famous Imola green frames etc etc etc... Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Betty on June 10, 2009, 04:38:52 AM Glad that the Oz Monster crowd do a little to help the situation. Nothing little about it. Thanks again. Now tell us, how can we help getting the pair of you to the factory tour and museum? I need to see pics of the pair of you next to the line of Bayliss and Corser SBK's and of course the famous Imola green frames etc etc etc... We will see how we go. The bike tour we were on officially ends tomorrow too ... we need to get in touch with those guys and see what we are going to do. I suspect it may depend on the insurance people, we were due to fly out on Friday ... Julie will be in no state to fly for 20+ hours though. So it depends on where we will be set up for the recovery. As for the photos: * I have one of Julie with a Bayliss edition 1098 at Ducati Pisa if that counts * one of her working on a 999s before we started (she couldn't stop herself from getting her hands dirty) * green frames, meh, been on a few rides with one of them back home (and yes it is a real one) Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: goldFiSh on June 10, 2009, 05:00:18 AM Cool.
All I know is that you guys will LOVE the visit to the factory. Broni is no Ducatisti (just married to one!) but after visiting the Vespa factory in Pontadera and the Duc factory in Bologna, she hadto relunctantly concede that the Ducati had it all over her beloved Vespa in terms of showing the love to their fans and showing off their history - the museum is done _very_ well... I know I've talked it up to death, and I know that if you have half a chance you'll be there, so I'll let it go now [thumbsup] Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: BribieDuc on June 11, 2009, 03:36:59 PM Sorry to hear about the accident...happy to hear you're okay.
Take care and get back safely. John Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Super T.I.B on June 11, 2009, 08:02:25 PM What's a spleen do anyway and what happens if you haven't got one?
Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: craigo on June 11, 2009, 08:37:12 PM http://wikipedia/wiki/Spleen (http://wikipedia/wiki/Spleen)
\snip The spleen is an organ found in all vertebrate animals[1]. In humans, the spleen is located in the abdomen of the body, where it functions in the destruction of old red blood cells and holds a reservoir of blood. It is regarded as one of the centers of activity of the reticuloendothelial system (part of the immune system). Until recently,[when?] the purpose of the spleen was not known. It is increasingly recognized that its absence leads to a predisposition to certain infections. \snip Had to look it up myself when I heard Super. Got some good news, i will be going to the ducati factory on Wednesday so im glad i haven't missed out [thumbsup]. You're both going to F$#kin' love it - if you can try to do the factory tour in the morning, so you get a bit of time to spend in the museum (if you're up for it, of course!) Oh, and go have a coffee in the factory caffeteria - the coffee is not great, only OK, but having little sugar satchels with ducatis on them, and wading through the bowl to find one of your bike makes up for it! Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Betty on June 22, 2009, 03:18:27 AM So the Aussie Doc is checking your blood to see if it's Ducati Red still. Ducati red is a bit cliche for Jukie :P She did get acknowledgement on the factory tour though. When the guide was explaining the changes in protective gear over the decades and the dangers/injuries/deaths that can result from 'incidents' ... a certain someone couldn't resist the "tell me about it" comment and pulled up her shirt (luckily the injury had reduced her flexibility enough to maintain some ... umm ... modesty). I don't know ... the lengths some people go to to make an impression [roll] [laugh] Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: heatherp on June 22, 2009, 11:52:28 AM Well what's the point of having a war wound if you can't show it off huh. My son injured his little face when he was about 18 months old. The macro cream has healed him up so well, you cannot even see the scar on him now (he is 3 now). It also worked on a scar my 70 year old mum was left with on her hand. Seriously, its the best. Plus, Betty can rub it in for you [evil]
Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Jukie on July 01, 2009, 05:36:05 PM thanks ducsport ill get some

I know that no words on a thread could ever fix what you've have to put up with. Best to you; I can't be at your bbq, but do know I'm wishing Jukie a speedy recovery and Mark a pat on the back for being so supportive through it all. Hope you scar turns out better than mine Jukie. My spleen was removed 25 year ago after ruptured in fall. Looks like they used a chainsaw to open me up, your scar is quite thin. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Jukie on July 11, 2009, 02:55:49 PM looovvvee the scar dukez, you also have the drain hole too.
yes but i do hope my heels a bit better than yours. if not then it just proves how tough this little jukie is. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: DukeZ on July 11, 2009, 03:45:03 PM The ' Drain Hole ' ouch. should be the PAIN hole... each day they'd withdraw some of the drain hose, there must have been 30 cms of hose inside :'(
Going thru the same pains again, had a double hernia operation on thursday, keyhole surgery but its still a killer. Can't stand up straight, cough, laugh ect - it feels like your guts are going to split open. Title: Re: Incident in Bologna Post by: Jukie on July 11, 2009, 03:50:14 PM yes yes yes i know the feeling, still having the stand up thing, and the hurt from the scar pulling.
