Title: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 11, 2009, 08:13:26 PM Okay, the old thread will be dead since new bikes come along and im not eying any specific.... heres a good one, but im afraid no title = no way to register it. I always loved the old school BMWs! anyone think i should jump on it? were the engines reliable then?

Old BMW's were notoriously reliable. One doesn't buy odd looking bikes for no reason. I'd lay money with an oil change, plugs, and fresh gas, it would start right up. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 12, 2009, 12:00:09 AM what about the whole title thing? id have to find a spare frame to title it... shouldnt be a problem right?
how were these things on gas? are parts easy to find/cheap? do you think its worht $500? Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 12, 2009, 12:38:19 AM make the beast with two backs, I FORGOT TO TAKE THE NUMBER DOWN THE LISTING EXPIRED. any of you guys might have it in ur cache?
edit; PHEW! thank you google. 1972 bmw r75/5 needs restoration no title i have the vin# to prove it was never stolen engine ran fine when parked 2 years ago. call me 501 593 8315 ... newyork.craigslist.org/brk/mcy/1205172680.html - Similar - got lucky that they cut of just after the number. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: Bun-bun on June 12, 2009, 04:59:52 AM You shouldn't need to buy a frame. The DMV can do a title search, and provide you with a title.
It's a royal pain in the ass, and takes a while, and costs a bit, but you will end up with a clear title, and the knowledge that no one can come and claim that it was their stolen bike. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: yamifixer on June 12, 2009, 05:34:00 AM THE /5 beamers are great bikes and run forever. The parts aren't cheap but if you have a Ducati you are used to it. They have a few electrical issues but not Lucas bad. buy it and have a good time with it.
and we want pictures. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: ducatiz on June 12, 2009, 11:22:11 AM That could be really hot. Old BMW's were notoriously reliable. I'd lay money with an oil change, plugs, and fresh gas, it would start right up. except when they weren't if you have a blown magneto on any old R bike, then you better hock the kids to get it rebuilt, or God forbid a blown crank. i had the magneto on mine rebuilt, wasn't cheap. plenty of parts gone, but it is from 1951, what can you do? Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 12, 2009, 12:07:44 PM time travel?
the 72s didnt have kick starts did they? i woudlnt even be able to tell if the engine was siezed or not. im still waiting a return call to go see it. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: ducatiz on June 12, 2009, 12:10:51 PM time travel? the 72s didnt have kick starts did they? i woudlnt even be able to tell if the engine was siezed or not. im still waiting a return call to go see it. most of the 72s i know of did. easiest way to tell if hte engine is siezed on a non-kickstart engine is to put it in 2nd gear and roll it. the gearbox will turn the engine. loosen the spark plugs to make it easy to turn (or remove them) i don't think they started deleting the kickstarters until around 79 or 80 Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: dbran1949 on June 12, 2009, 03:37:54 PM much better deal than the honda 450
Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 12, 2009, 03:49:38 PM you obviously havent seen the bike.
the bike is $500, the seat has been eaten away by weather and the guages are IZ_ from acid rain. the tank is a bit odd. if these things come with removable side tank panels then this bike definately doesntt have them. still no word from the seller :( well, i called him again, his mail box if full so i doubt he actually listens to them. further more, it never rings, just goes straight to voice mail. Im going to try and text him, but thats it. i dont think theres much more i can do. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: Langanobob on June 13, 2009, 08:03:19 AM Quote i dont think theres much more i can do. I'm thinking that's probably a good thing. It just looks to me like that bike needs too much time and money and your time and money could be better spent on another project. Unless you really have a strong feeling for that particular bike in which case logic doesn't matter. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 14, 2009, 07:25:24 PM since i cant find that BMW anywhere at all, even if i go as far as 300 miles :(
this thing popped up http://newjersey.craigslist.org/mcy/1221444022.html (http://newjersey.craigslist.org/mcy/1221444022.html) lauramonster was kind enough to give me a hand on finding a title for it! 750s were popular enough to get parts for no? i think i may of hyped myself too much for that BMW R75/5 ive seen an r60 in person and damn did thye look good. :( Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: Langanobob on June 15, 2009, 01:36:53 AM The "iconic" Honda looks like a lot better starting point than that rotten old Beemer. What exactly would be involved in getting it re-titled in NY? That seems like the only real issue, bringing in an out-of-state untitled bike and trying to get it all legal.

What exactly would be involved in getting it re-titled in NY? That seems like the only real issue, bringing in an out-of-state untitled bike and trying to get it all legal. it's not crazy hard, it is just $$$. for certain aged vehicles, you'll get a title bond, swear that it was bought legally, and a few other gyrations. you transfer it to the title company, they do some background searches to make sure it's not stolen, and after a few months, you get a title. i got a quote on a bike a while back -- $800. really have to decide if that is worth it for you. I think that is the going rate +/- a few hundred. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 15, 2009, 07:32:14 AM got your PM.
I think it might be easier to just find a spare frame with a title. ive seen them pop up from craigslist from time to time for a 100 bucks. I would just swap out the frame. the CB750 seems popular enough. Though from the photographs, it seems the bike is in rather good condition. One has to assume the possibility of it being stolen. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: dbran1949 on June 15, 2009, 08:06:40 AM Check out this guy if you want to know about CB750

http://www.ibmwr.org/market/adlist.php?cat=abs (http://www.ibmwr.org/market/adlist.php?cat=abs) I didn't browse any, but I'd imagine many of the bikes you'll find on that list will be a little out of your price range and probably won't be fixer-uppers either. I'm pretty jealous though of your "tough decision" though :) I have an 88 R100RT that I took to St. Louis this weekend (prepare for a rave about Gateway BMW in another thread) and they had the exact same year and model of my bike minus every ounce of bullshit the bike didn't need to run and it was GORGEOUS. I can't say I'd know what to do in your situation either. On one hand, the 750s I'm sure will have an abundane of cheaper parts and support. On the other hand, it's an airhead BMW :). I think it's two opposite spectrum examples of time and effort. Oh, and like Mr. Inc said, old Beemers are indestructible. Mine has 120k on the clock and I have no doubt whatsoever it will give me many thousand more. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 15, 2009, 07:01:12 PM actually the CB750 and the BMW r75 were competing models. THe BMW was much more power and faster for its time, however it was nearly 1/3 of the cost more then the BMW.
I have the knowledge and ability to make parts for the bike to make it run. what i dont have are frabricating skils, such as making fenders etc. But hey, i can learn. :) you know whats a bigger problem then deciding? I CANT FIND A BMW!!!! oh and heres what dcuatizz was talking about http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/mcy/1223602924.html (http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/mcy/1223602924.html) lol how ironic. Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: He Man on June 17, 2009, 11:24:30 AM Man, ive called and emailed so many ads on CL that are litteraly 1-2 days old, no one seems to want to reply.
on the other hand, look at what i found, looks very busy. but way way out of my price range. http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/mcy/1225666841.html (http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/mcy/1225666841.html) (http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/990/cafe736hq6.jpg) Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: dbran1949 on June 17, 2009, 11:34:12 AM ** From Craig's list *** Not for wimps. Located Long Island. $5500 and don't even think of low-balling. DOH the first thing I thought of was low-balling, hope I don't get into trouble Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: El Matador on June 17, 2009, 11:39:05 AM I have the knowledge and ability to make parts for the bike to make it run. what i dont have are frabricating skils, such as making fenders etc. But hey, i can learn. :) But you know people who do ;) Title: Re: Search for a summer project Post by: elephantrider70 on June 17, 2009, 05:25:59 PM dont fear the lack of a title !
ive used the broadway title co. for titles at a cost of appx 150$ and they will get you a title by means of a transfer cof ownership. i believe they do bike's ive onlky used them for cars ! good luck .did you call al w/ the cb 350? he may want more than the bike is realisticly worth. but i dont have the heart vto tell him!
