Title: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: mstevens on May 19, 2008, 04:27:15 PM It's clear I don't know about this stuff, but I'm trying to figure out what the advantage of coffin reservoirs could be. The only thing that occurs to me is that they must be cheaper. I just can't figure out why they'd be cheaper. As far as I can tell, "regular" round reservoirs with screw-on tops are less prone to corrosion and leakage, and they appear to have fewer parts.
So what am I missing? Why are coffins cheaper than round reservoirs? Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Why are coffins cheaper than round reservoirs? A one piece casting is likely cheaper to buy than a casting, the reservoir, and the hoses and clamps. Add assembly costs and you've saved 3 lire. ;) Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: mstevens on May 19, 2008, 05:28:41 PM Because they're old technology. So the savings aren't in the reservoir itself but in the couple of extra piddling parts to hold it on and connect it... Quote Add assembly costs and you've saved 3 lire. ;) Kewl! So that means I can convert to round reservoirs for mere pennies! Right? Right? Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: ducpainter on May 19, 2008, 05:30:12 PM Ah. I can see a slippery slope all the way from here to bankruptcy! The coffins don't bother me. Much. I just wondered if there were any reason for their continued use other than cheapness. Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: mmakay on May 21, 2008, 05:19:55 AM I have to say, I think the coffins are much better looking than plastic cups. I've wondered why you can't get higher-end levers with integrated reservoirs.

I swap the Multistrada ones onto my Monster, I really wanted something different for my bike. Not better looking but at least different. My economic stimulus check won't do the country much good if I send it to England, though! ;D Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: Capo on May 21, 2008, 09:10:41 AM ISR are made in Sweden, I think there is a dealer in the US, but be warned they are not cheap.
Juan, that is a nice clean look. Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: Juan on May 21, 2008, 09:12:36 AM Thanks Capl..!!

Post by: MotoPsycho on May 23, 2008, 09:58:18 AM screw the plastic cups, get the rizoma cups, that's what I did. And you can get pazzo levers which are pretty damn nice with my FHE with them and they make them to fit the older large pivot pumps. mu remote rez and coffin pumps, take the same levers.
Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Post by: krista on May 23, 2008, 12:53:58 PM pazzo levers Aren't those the people that copied CRG? A great all metal master cylinder comes off of a Kawi ZX6D. It was the 2nd generation after the original ninja 600. You can go to a motorcycle salvage yard and look for bikes with all metal master cylinders, then double check there are 2 calipers with 4 pistons each. And/or look at the bottom of the master cylinder for either 16 or 5|8 meaning is 5/8" bore size and will work with the brembo calipers. (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/771/images/300x200/KAWAZZR600X5-0806-01.jpg) I had one of those on my 900ss and really liked it. And then it went onto Zina's 900ss: (http://ducatigirl.com/inventory/cr_rightside.jpg) (http://ducatigirl.com/inventory/cr_dash.jpg) :) Chris Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? I'm a poser, and I copied exactly what Chris just mentioned already. I like the look of the coffin's on the monsters better than the goofy round or quadratic plastic doo-hickeys. Works great, looks good, and is super cheap. Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? Are there large pivot levers for the newer bikes? I can't seem to really find any except for CRG and have to wrangle the doohickey to hit the clutch switch. andy Title: Re: Why coffin reservoirs? This is where I got mine at. http://www.motomummy.com/store/product.php?productid=16140&cat=357&page=1 (http://www.motomummy.com/store/product.php?productid=16140&cat=357&page=1) Follow the drop down boxes and find what you need. I like the short ones since my gloves bridge the 3rd & 4th finger and makes it hard to hold on and operate a lever at the same time. |
