Title: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 17, 2009, 06:18:12 AM For the last several years, I have made a trek to a favorite spot in the back country of Colorado near Buena Vista. This year, while I was originally going to go to Laguna Seca for motogp, I realized that spending a few grand while trying to start a new company in a down economy isnt so bright.
So again, back pack and tent in hand, I am headed to the land of paradise, and extend the invitation to you all to join me. From camp: (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0261.jpg) (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake/IMG_0795.jpg) (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0280.jpg) (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0333.jpg) From the Harvard climb: (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0340.jpg) (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0352.jpg) (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/ducducgooseme/Anglemeyer%20Lake%20and%20Harvard%20Climb/CIMG0367.jpg) Here are the details as they exist thus far: The hike begins in Buena Vista toward Mt Harvard. You dont need to be a star athlete to get there, nor do you need your own equipment. Like Keith and his bikes, I have enough back country equipment (tents, packs, bag, stoves) for a small invading army. You will be hiking uphill, so yes, you will get a workout. But you can do it at your own pace. You do NOT need to be Ed Viesturs. The hike itself takes a moderately in shape person 3-4 hours with a moderate pack. I am willing to take multiple trips and sherpa anyone's gear that needs it. Without a pack, it will take 2 hours for you. The lake is about 1/4 mile from the marked trail, and I know the way very well.. The cost will be minimal (your gas to get to Colorado). I will dehydrate all the food needed for as many of you that wish to come, on my dime. if you have your own equipment, great. If not, I will provide it. Only rules I ask is that you treat the area like a sanctuary. If you pack it in, you pack it out. We take nothing but photos, we leave nothing but foot prints. The location is perfect for those that wish to try a back country camping trip for the first time or those wanting to summit a 14k Colorado peak as it is between Harvard and Columbia. The 14'er part of the trip is optional, and should only be attempted by those willing to leave early the day of the summit climb and are in shape enough to handle it. While not hard, as far as 14'ers go, it is a long hike. I am doing this trip either way, with or without company, but would love to share it with you. My thoughts are to meet July 3rd in Buena Vista and return the 6th. If you are interested, I will provide a list of clothing, etc you will need. RSVP is necessary so I can get the food prepped. Looks nice DDGM, but I'm afraid I'm kinda a weenie when it comes to back-packing. More of a let's go fishin' and camping guy. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: Kawboy on June 18, 2009, 10:29:54 PM Shaazaaammm! That would be cool, BUT, can't do it. I'd have to take time off from work and I already am scheduled for a week off later in July for a trip to CA. Don't have a backpack anyway. :( But do have camping gear. :)
Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: Diavolo on June 19, 2009, 12:15:49 AM My idea of camping is a hotel with a number for pizza hut taped to the desk. Still it looks nice and, if I had an inkling of faith that my back with 5 ruptured discs could take a hike and come back down on two feet, I would make reservations with you...
I can't imagine having the rest of the crew draggin my fat ass down that beautiful hill... :-[ Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 19, 2009, 05:14:35 AM You bunch - o excuse havin pussies.

Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 19, 2009, 10:08:27 AM so back on topic..looks like im the only one who can make it?
Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: dusty on June 19, 2009, 10:17:53 AM Not necessarily...still working on making it happen. I think it would be a blast. :)
BTW...Bonfy! Where are you?! Will you be working? What up, girl? Sorry ddgm can't make it I guess i'll be az for the 4th :-[ Does that mean Jim and Seana can't go either?? Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: bonfy on June 19, 2009, 12:10:56 PM Well, the deal is that I am scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights 3rd shift, so I am usually dragging ass come Sunday morning, but if you guys were staying through till Monday, I could make a quick zip up to catch you before you break camp. I haven't seen my schedule for that week yet and they have been riding me like a rented mule, just plugging me in anywhere and anytime they feel like it, so I am not very optimistic about being able to get away.
I climbed Harvard and Columbia in 1996 so I know the area is very beautiful (unless the weekend warriors with no hiking etiquette have trashed it - doubtful as most backcountry folks are of the same mindset). I will definitely try to come if I have Sun and Mon off. I'll need really REALLY good directions to your secret spot, DDGM, since our history shows disconnects are a distinct possiblity. ;D In fact, maybe you should leave a trail of red flags up the trail. Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: Zaster on June 19, 2009, 08:12:40 PM so back on topic..looks like im the only one who can make it? What time in Buena Vista? I would have to be back Sunday night.Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 20, 2009, 05:02:55 AM whatever time you wish my friend
Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: Count Desmo on June 20, 2009, 04:57:25 AM I really, really wish I could make it DDGM. July 3rd is Hannah's 5th birthday, and we have family coming into town. It wold be good to see you, and I'm always looking for an excuse to go to the mountains...but I can't make the date this year.
I hope you all have a great time! Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 25, 2009, 04:49:43 PM Ladies and gents...I need a final headcount for next weekend. If you can make it, I'd love to have ya. If not, next time!
cheers Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: bonfy on June 27, 2009, 05:01:56 PM I'm off Sunday and Monday so I have pencilled it in as a destination. It is not carved in stone. When you see me I'll be there . ;D Don't calculate me in on your headcount because I have my own gear and provisions. I could use some directions from the trailhead if it is not obvious where you will be camping.
Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 28, 2009, 04:04:29 AM well the bad news is that i will be heading out on Sunday bonfy cuz of work on monday. got a gps? I will email you coordinates

I think we'd better just plan on a ride one of these days. I finally broke down and bought a Tracfone (for my ferret sitter). A GPS is right out. I'm still doing the compass and orienteering deal while traipsing about. Wish they had an old fart emoticon. ;D Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: kingbaby on June 28, 2009, 06:26:18 PM You (http://smileydatabase.com/s/766.gif)'s never change.

Truer words never spoken, matey! 8) The tracfone was major for me, dude. If it weren't for ailing ferrets, I still wouldn't have one. Guarantee ya a GPS will NEVER happen. Just ain't my thang. Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 29, 2009, 07:40:54 AM Well it looks like it isnt in the cards this time bonfy. :'(
If it makes you feel any better, gps is my back up. Im a topo and declination guy (how i found it in the first place). Just figured I would save you some trouble. But, given that we are leaving the day you can get there....a rain check it is. Title: Re: Join me for a July 4 weekend in Colorado Paradise Post by: ducducgooseme on June 29, 2009, 12:01:52 PM So the final.... my friend Stephen is meeting me friday AM in BV.
