QuoteWASHINGTON - The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.
"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."
During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.
"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.
"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."
Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.
Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."
Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

The guy has nuclear launch codes and they're sending him a non-lethal flyswatter. GREAT PERSPECTIVE, PETA!!
I sometimes think they're funded by the meat industry to make vegetarians look like morons.

groups like peta really make me want to start my own activist group that admonishes people for wearing the color yellow or some equally illogical act.
I generally agree with the core of what PETA is about, but as an INTERNAL choice for myself. I'm not a mission to change everyone else through the power of illogical arguments and failed analogy.
[bang]
When people find out I'm a vegetarian, they often ask if I'm a PETA member. It's really too bad that association is so prevalent.

I'd join-I don't really like yellow. We'd have to make up reasons though.
"Wearing yellow detracts from emergency vehicles-when people don't take them seriously people die!"

"yellow is the color of the sun. are you trying to say you are more important to life on earth than the sun is?"
Depends, what if you live in Seattle? There is no sun there already...
Any press is good press for PETA?
Now lets eat some [bacon]

they get sun, it's just more limited than other places on the planet.
they of all people should hold the sacred yellow in higher regard than to show such disdain as to wear it's color for clothing.

So then fishermen in yellow slickers would be the equivilant of a satanic cult to your group?
and to PETA. they slaughter those poor innocent fish!!
[cheeky]
My bike is yellow. ;D
the more PETA folks open their mouths, the more people think they are idiots.
they are their own undoing..
if you have a coworker who thinks highly of them, show them the sea kittens crap and the statement about the fly swatting. if they still think highly of PETA, that person is a moron.
period.
flies carry disease, they serve no purpose except to carry disease from place to place and to feed frogs.

It was bad...I'll have to see if I can find the letter and Ben & Jerry's response online and post it up here for you to read.
Something about how it's inhumane to farm milk from cows and they should instead farm humans... ???

i think the reasoning is that the cows don't have a choice, but the humans do.
i always love it when people put the lives and well being of animals above that of their fellow humans.
If you want to discredit PETA, it isn't hard.

QuoteAnimal-Rights Activists Release 71,000 Cows Into Wild
December 16, 1998 | Issue 34•20
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WIâ€"Members of the radical group Animal Liberation Front swept through a 900-square-mile region of Western Wisconsin Monday, freeing an estimated 71,000 cows from their human captors.
"These cows are finally free to run wild through the wilderness," said ski-masked ALF member "Brent," loosing a 200-head Guernsey herd from Milk-Rite Dairy in Reedsburg. "No creature should have to live in servitude to humans."
Within hours of the cows' release, police departments throughout the area began receiving reports of bovine fatalities.
