it works for him, because he knows the result before he hits search

excellent point
perhaps this was not the intention of this thread...but....the search function seems to be lacking the "quote" ability ...like Google. In Google we use "quotes" to keep phrases together. but here it doesn't seem to work that way, i thought TOB had this function.
My example comes from a search i just tried....."K&N" or k&n...return very strange results.

Maybe suggest it to the SMF people.

No offense, but this kind of sounds like whining - this isn't google, and never will be.
On the plus side, there are a lot of other search modifiers to get what you need:
User - probably not likely to remember, I know I don't
Date - I use this, and can typically remember how about many months ago I read something of interest
Which Board - This also helps, 98% of useful DMF information comes from tech and acc & mod.
Your results may vary...
mitt
Also, remember, you can sort threads without using search by clicking on:
Number of views
Number of posts
Last post date
at the forum home page.
This can help find a popular topic that has slipped a couple pages back.
mitt
Also don't forget that you can set Google to search within a specific domain if you prefer their search tools.
Not whining, just trying to be helpful. I know that SMF makes a Google search plug-in, but i am not going to ask our flounderers to modify the message board to accommodate this function(if they did want to , here is a link to the Google search mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1930).
Actually i was hoping that someone would have suggested a different type of 'keyword' search then i was doing in my example above.
I already use the suggest sort functions, and that is very useful, the only time i actually use the search function is when i can't find the topic or i have never seen/read a thread with the information i am looking for as i am not reading every thread/post everyday as i actually enjoy riding more.....OK that was a bit sarcastic.
Either way, thanks for the suggestions.

Here's the results if you do it, a bit better than the SMF results for this particular search.
K&N search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=K%26N&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fducatimonsterforum.org%2F&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images)(http://paularickert.net/albums/userpics/dmf-google.jpg)

Thanks for the link.
We may try it, but if the google logo appears on the forum it will piss me off.
I personally really don't feel like advertising for them.
I know it's just me.

that is funny, because i just read a thread on how to remove the logo....and add your own.
Let me know if i can help. But again, i don't want to be the squeaky wheel, i am sure you folks have much more stuff to focus on.

Send one, or both of us the link...we'll check it out.
I've uploaded the mod, but haven't applied it yet.
If we can use the google search function to make the user experience better, because let's face it the forum search function sucks, and not advertise for them, or cause a nightmare doing software upgrades I'm all for it.
DP,
will do...but it may be a few days....stupid job(in my best homer simpson voice)
