Title: My Powdercoat gun sucks!
Post by: He Man on June 19, 2009, 08:37:13 PM
Powdered my rims, rearsets, some other odd stuff. Must of not been used more than 15 times. POS crapped out on me. Either powder isnt getting charged enough or, the grounds not working. Cant open it either cause it voids my warranty. Ive read about this issue, and i was hoping it was going to happen, but it did. :( People have said eastwood will back the warranty up, but it barely saw use!

Don't spend the extra $$ to buy this thing, just get the Harbor Freight one for $30 cheaper.

Fixed it for ya.

Sucks that it crapped out on you. Good luck with the warranty.

Pffft-when I was your age I used to powder coat with a campfire, a 9 volt battery, and a modified kazoo (as the gun), and things came out just fine.

Theres only 2 options, the harbor freight one, and the eastwood one. (in terms of sub $100 powder coating guns) And I didnt return it cause i was crunched for time since i need my bike, and it was working at the time. One of the biggest annoyances of this thing is its inconsistent spray pattern. it tends to throw out large chunks no matter how well you unpack the powder, and ofcourse, the stupid gun isnt made to last long at all. Ive found quite a number of threads talking about how many some people go through a year. The transformer also weighs less than 1/4 lb. there's something to be said about that in itself.

See "I'm too poor to buy cheap".

Buying cheap tools will never help. They're cheap for a reason. If you want to do it right, go buy something professional grade. If you can't afford it, make do, or wait. It's really the only way.

You're right, but the entry level Eastwood Hobby gun isnt marketed as a cheap gun. Its marketed as the best entry level hobby gun you can get.

The next gun im looking to buy, hypersmooth pony is getting great reviews for a $260 unit. Ill just get this replaced and sell it on ebay.
Pro guns are in excess of $1500. :o

Yeah but if it lasts you ten years, it sort of works out, no? I know it ain't feasible now, but there's nothing like having the right tool for the job.

oh i agree completely. But im not going to using the gun for 8 hours a day 200 days a year for the next 10 years. I figure "high quality(oxymoron)" hobby gun would suffice. Needless to say, it didnt.

When i picked up the transformer box for this thing, i was EXTREMELY disappointed.  Thing is made out of plastic, and is probably not even an actual transformer. Its probably a bunch of capacitors working together. The "transformer" itself is about the size of a large hamburger, where the cheaper chinese made harbor freight one is about the size of a portable SMAW welder .

It's a hobby gun.

If you want longevity buy a pro unit.

No...

All I'm saying is eastwood is a hobbyist company and most hobbyists use a unit once or twice a year.

The gun is guaranteed and as you said they'll take care of it.

If you don't want the aggravation of the inconvenience...

buy a pro unit.
Title: Re: Eastwood Powdercoat gun sucks!
Post by: ducatiz on June 20, 2009, 06:47:51 PM
how much was it?

divide by 15, that's how much it cost you per use.

I do that all the time.

I bought a table saw at Harbor Freight for 75 bucks -- 11 years ago.  I've used it literally thousands of times.. Have built all kinds of shit with it, have gone thru a few dozen blades.

I could have bought a pricey one, the SawStop one is like $600.. ANd I doubt it would have cut more.

Some things aren't made to last long no matter what you pay -- plus, if they are replacing it, then don't worry about it.  IF you don't need it SELL IT.

once or twice a year isnt much of a hobby. Anything hobby should be fine for light use as long as you treat it right and dont demand to much of it. I PC'ed 15 items, and the whole unit probably didnt see more than 30 mins of actual trigger time.

That's your opinion/perspective of  hobby use.

So if you use the 'formula' the gun cost you less than $6.67/ use and it will be replaced.

What's the issue? You want more quality for your hundy.

Welcome to the 21st century.

M ost people might do a set of valve covers and a waterpump, then nothing much for a while. Most car parts don't fit in an oven, or their wife catches 'em at it.

Like 'tizz said-divide cost by uses-so $100/15uses= $6 and change per use.

Now think about what it would cost to send those things out for powdercoat. It's not a bad deal, but really, hobby stuff is *not* meant to hold up.

im not disagree with you guys, i didnt expect this thing to hold up for longer than maybe 100 parts. but 15 is just sad. its not an overly complicated thing either.

I just dropped $300 bucks on a new gun, once and if i get a replacement for this, im jst going to ebay it.  great reviews on durability and consistency!

$300 isn't bad.

Have you ever priced top of the line liquid guns?

nope, i dont think i want to. I know the top of line powder guns are around $1500-$3000, im sure those HVLP guns run in that range to. I dont even know how it can manage to cost that much.

i hope so to :(. but that $100 is mostly recoverable. If eastwood approves of the warranty claim, then ill get back atleast $70 bucks. so it offsets it.

Hello... I work for the Eastwood Company & was forwarded your thread this morning.

I was wondering if you have had the chance to contact the Customer Service Dept @ Eastwood yet about the warranty on your gun? We stand behind our products & I know if the gun is less than 1 year old, it would be covered under warranty & you would be entitled to either a FREE replacement or a REFUND.

Electrical items can be funny when it comes to durability/longevity... I know people that have bought a BRAND NEW TV/radio & had it crap out in 2 weeks & others who have the same unit they bought back in 1993 still going strong...

Considering the # of guns we have sold since their introduction 10 years ago, we have had VERY few issues with these guns & MANY satisfied customers. I hope we can turn this negative experinece into a positive one for you & that we can better serve you with your future projects.

Customer Service can be reached @ 1-800-544-5118

Have a GREAT day!!!

Touché! I didnt expect this to happen! I may not like the gun, but i sure as hell like a company that stands behind their products, especially one that goes the extra step like this.

I did get in contact with the ebay representative since thats where i purchased it from. I'm in email contact with them, and they said that it may be moisture build up inside the "tranformer" box. and i can press the ionizing triger on and off for several minutes and see if that helps. It certainly did, but the powder isnt building up nicely. i tried shooting the gold i had (which i know works cause i shot my wheels with them) and it was much better ( the white must need a higher kv to shoot). I tried to shoot again this morning, but the gun became very inconsistent, kind of like i was messing with the ionizer as i was shooting.

It has been raining for the past 3 weeks in NYC.  but the item has also been sitting in a box in my room since then. ill call the hotline to see if i can get to the bottom of this thing.

and NAKID, yes i have a in line moisture filter right before the gun.

I have nothing but good stuff to say about them. Really down to earth guys and are genuinely willing to help.

I found this thread pop up on google searching eastwood powdercoat, and it kinda sucks that at first glance im bad mouthing them, but really they've been nothing more then helpful, and im sorry if it comes of that way!

and thank you Keith Morris for taking time out of your day to register and post up in support of your product!

Perhaps i should delete the thread? or should it stay as proof of a company that actually stands behind their product!
