What major differences are you experiencing, good and bad.

I sat down to figure out what I would want to upgrade on my 696, (new tires, Termis, new seat, suspension and came up with roughly $2500.

If I could get a good trade in, or sell out right, the price for me to upgrade to an 1100 is only about $1000 more, would address some of the above upgrades, and I could look at getting termis down the road. 

It's too hard to say. Bigger displacement isn't always better. I have a 750 and I don't think I am riding it to it's fullest potential on the street. I can't imagine swapping up to an 1100 as my 750 opened up is already a bit more than the roads can legally handle.

dont forget the the oil cooler and the ear to ear smile factor when you get on it
i did said upgrade lost about 2000 in the big picture if i bought just the 1100 around 13,5 but what i paid for 696 plus differance after trade in just over 15 and i dont regret it at all.
696 has a slipper clutch 1100 doesnt took me a while to remember that after getting on the 1100 after 696
the 1100 feels more stable when holding a line through a corner i found the 696 almost too responsive or twitchy to the slightest input at the bars
and of course the single sided swingarm

i can tell you i'm nowhere near the limits of the 696. the 1100 would just get me in trouble, except would help with 2-up riding.
The 696 is twitchy but it is forgiving as well. i heard it becomes a bit more stable with the 180 tire in the back and some suspension work.

I took this path (and I had a 620 before the 696).

The 1100s has plenty more power than I need, I just wanted a bit more than the 696 had.

However, the 1100s rides more smoothly than the 696, and I get blown away by the looks and dry-clutch rattle every time I see it.

So, well worth it for the looks, but probably brings too much of a power increase - it's also more frustrating to ride at low speed.

I'm glad I upgraded, but I think there's a hole for bike with the 1100s trick bits, but lower power.

who knows, maybe the 696 will get upgraded one day to a true 800 with SSS

how about a true 750 or 800, with a sss and a dry clutch, talk about the perfect middle range monster... with maybe 80-90 hp

then again maybe that is exactly why ducati won't make it.  it would be the perfect monster, only 1 bike in their "monster" lineup... hmmm do that  and offer an 1100S model as the upgrade and you have bascially 2 perfect monsters.

The 696 makes very similar power to the S2R 800, as far as I know.  Just a *little* less torque.

ok then, well they should bump it up to 800 make it sss and dry clutch and now you have the perfect beginner ducati.

then no one would upgrade....

Can you say "built in sales?"

With another 100cc, SSS & Dry clutch, I know I'd never do it.

Er, the 696 makes 80 hp. I would call that mid-range.

if that is the case then why are people going for only 15 more hp in the 1100 then?

i think the perfect middle ground would be something like an 800 with only 10 more hp.

probably fi they did that they could get the 1100 up to smething like 100 or 105hp with some work sell it in only an S model and get ride of the 696 and make it an 800 with a sss and dry clutch and have it put out 85-90 hp so its a beginner/intermediate bike with it almost being a step above since it would only be 5 hp difference.

torque.  suspension.  aesthetics.  torque is what makes it so much fun.

To summarise: I'd have loved a *slightly* more powerful 696, with the trick stuff.

(or, maybe even, a 848s - blesphemy!)

696 = too little, 1100s = too much

...take ya choice.
