Tech Gurus, I am looking at an insurance write-off ducati Supersport 1000ds. Its a 2004 model, fuel injected, and I know is fitted with the immobiliser the same as my current 2003 model 620 Sport.
I want it for a track bike project, but the problem is the bike does not come with ANY keys. No black key, and no red key. It does have the instruments fitted, which seem undamaged from the crash. I have done some searches on the forum, and can find lots of info on the whole red key issue and duplicating/cloning black keys, but it seems as though the only option for no key at all is a new ECU/instruments/red key option, which will be very expensive. Any advice or links to a thread I missed in my searches?
Thanks, ducsport
If the salvage bike is a good enough deal how about an aftermarket ecu, which doesn't use the immobilizer, and a new ignition switch or a toggle switch for ignition?
There are several choices for aftermarket ecus.
Yeah.. w/o any keys you're looking at replacing the dash module and ECU and locks. But since it's going to be a tracker, you don't really need locks.
Lots of folks like the Nemesis ECU, and the 'Type 2' will fit right up to that bike

There's other option available - but the Nemesis is by Magneti Marelli, who do the factory ECU, so I'd expect good plug n play comparability that might not be found on other units. Nems might be on the pricier side, but *should* require less time (and cost) to get going.
Keihin 41mm flat-slide carbs and an Ignitech spark box working some dual output Dyna coils. ;D

Luddite ;)
another alternative is to yank the ECU and send to the "reflash" guys who are reflashing the factory ECU to DP ECU specs. Almost all claim (note: I haven't personally verified or done myself and thus why I phrase this way) that they can "disable the gauge pod function as well as disable the immobilizer functionality". (ie: you should be able to install the reflashed ECU and use whatever key or on/off switch you like) Given you are using it as a track bike, you will probably be making intake / exhaust mods and will need to tweak with the air/fuel ratio anyway and the DP ECU baseline is better than the stock ECU setup.
Talk with them and please report back anything you learn.

Valid response I suppose...
But the flat-slide equipped DS engines are pumping out the same or MORE power than the efi bikes so go fig, eh? Talk w/Chris Kelley @ CA-Cycleworks. He's got more experience with this than I do...

I was joking Stuart....
that's what the wink was all about.
The flat slide option is a very valid one.
I don't know the cost of it as opposed to the Nemesis option though.
any Code Card ? --- if so, you can rebuilt your RED and Black keys at Ducati serv.
Nemesis is Dead now I am not sure if you can find a Nemesis ECU, but you can try Ignitech ECU (which i m going to buy for my bike in several days bacause of my dead ECU :)))) http://www.ignitech.cz/english/ignijet/ducati/ignijet_2007_ducati.htm (http://www.ignitech.cz/english/ignijet/ducati/ignijet_2007_ducati.htm)
good luck

Sorry Nate. I forgot to put a ( ;D ) on it to send the emotion that I knew what you were getting at. [thumbsup]

Should have known better.
Thanks guys - knew you would have the good ideas. The carb/ignition idea did come to me as well, but seemed a bit ummm 'old school'.. [cheeky]
Looks like the reflash option may be the best way to go, along with a toggle switch for the ignition. Just have to factor it into the offer for the salvage
Cheers, ducsport
There's also the Microsquirt option that Motocreations brought up in another thread. I think you'd then have programmable ignition and fuel curves from a laptop, perfect for a track bike.
Don't know how the price compares, the Microsquirt itself is about $400 and is definitely not plug and play, so there will be other expenses, plus time.
