Title: Looking for Suggestions "Trans Problems"
Post by: Sause on June 29, 2009, 07:33:30 AM
I recently had a horrible down shift. I managed to find one of the many neutrals on my 2000 M750 Carbed. After which I now hear a clunking noise from the transmission while accelerating. It does not matter how hard you accelerate. The clunk is most noticeable in 1st gear, sometimes in 2nd if you listen for it.

Anyway I took out the clutch out yesterday and when I turn the piece that holds the plates I can here my clunk. This is in neutral, it comes and goes in 1st and 2nd but I can't really hear it in 3rd or higher.

I figure it is something nasty in the trans. Whats my best course of action at this point?

I am at this point leaning 90% of the way toward selling my KTM to fund a donor M900 Engine. if/when I go to purchase an engine what questions should I be asking?

I know:
   * Whats the service history?
   * Mileage?
   * Why was the bike parted?

Also PM me if you are selling an engine It would have to be carbed...

m900 engines arent that expensive wher eyou need to sell a bike, unless the bike isnt worth that much to begin with.

Id open the engine and have a look see before i start buying another engine. Try draining the oil and looking for bits of metal.

I drained the oil and removed the clutch. It could use a new clutch but there was nothing extreme going wrong with it. when I rotate the part that the clutch disks slide into then I hear my clunking noise.

About the KTM, I haven't taken it out in a while and will be moving to a place without a garage... Only going to be room for the Ducati in the living room :)

which piece, the thing with the 40 or so teeth or basket with only 12 teeth?

maybe its broken. if it is, its a simple fix. make a clutch drum holding too to remove it, as well as the basket and inspect it.

Most evident in neutral, When in gear it comes and goes it seems. Hard to tell with the rest of the drivetrain moving around. I'll remove the chain tomorrow and see if I can tell.

Thanks for the help
