Title: A little venting...
Post by: ZLTFUL on June 29, 2009, 07:55:05 AM
So those of you who frequent the Racing and Trackdays forum know that a week ago on Saturday, I lowsided my track bike and broke 4 ribs. The initial slam into the concrete combned with my arm being against my side when it happened caused the ribs to get busticated.

I have been mostly taking it easy and not lifting stuff...heck, I haven't even started stripping the broken parts off the track bike yet.
Anyway, fast forward to yesterday afternoon. I was carrying a small bag of groceries down to the basement and mis-stepped and twisted my left knee pretty good. But the reall problem came when I tried to catch myself with my right side...the side my broken ribs are on. Bad bad thing. I honestly laid on the floor for 20 minutes on the verge of tears it hurt so bad. And I am not ashamed to admit that I almost did cry.

I made sure that I could still breath (absolutely terrified about puncturing a lung). Then gingerly worked my way up. Knee is swollen a little bit but my side hurts at least 5 times more than it did the first week. When I first went to the ER on Monday last week, the pain then was supposed to be near it's peak and it was 3-7 depending on how I moved.

Now, it is a definite 10 when I move certain ways with a 6 when I am just breathing normally sitting down.

So jump to this morning when I got out of bed...things hurt. Things hurt and I was seriously doubting my ability to perform my assigned tasks tday at work. So I called my boss.
I informed them that I was seriously considering a repeat visit to the ER and what had transpired last night.

Now to the venting part...
Why the make the beast with two backs should I feel guilty about missing work to try to recuperate? I mean, it isn't like I intended for this to happen. I mean, my track days are dangerous, granted. But then this doesn't explain the guy who is off this week with a broken ankle who was playing soccer with his kids. They didn't make the beast with two backsing lecture him about his choice of free time activities.
What I do on my time is exactly that...what I do on MY time.

So they are acting all pissy towards me because I am considering taking the week off and just focusing on resting and recuperating. I even told them that I was hoping to do it with 2 comp days that I have coming, a paid holiday day (they gave us one since the 4th falls on a Saturday) and then 2 vacation days.
Hell...I even have accident insurance just for shit like that.
But now I am getting back from HR that they are not sure I can do this because those days have to be planned 30 days in advance.

I talked to my Dr. this morning and he said it would be a good idea for me to lay low and relax for a few days to avoid aggrevating the injury even more than I aleady have.
And to add insult to injury, my boss just came in and said they want me to move a 30lb computer and 75lb LCD TV from one side of the building to the other.

UM jackwads, my note from the Dr says no lifting more than 5lbs for at least 4 weeks.

I pay for accident insurance. I pay for medical insurance and I pay for long and short term disabilit just for shit like this.
And my IT counterpart took a week off unscheduled to be with her husband when he broke his ankle...it wasn't even HER injury for cripes sake.

I am getting very frustrated with the double standard bullshit when it comes to me and her. What? Cristy needs the day off to take her husband to the chiropractor? OK. No problem.
What? Ryan wants to take a few days to heal up so he can get back in the game sooner? How dare he even consider such a thing!

Some days I feel like they love having me around and that I really am a great asset here. Other days I feel like anything I ask for is a serious inconvenience to the company.

Call your HR Rep and file a short term disability claim.

Your doctors nurse/assistant will have to fill out the paperwork certifying you have  legit injury and can't perform your work tasks.

It will be a few weeks before you can move a 75lbs computer.

Get on the horn quick and get the paperwork going.

If that's the way you're being treated at work, you have no reason to feel guilty. Do what you need to do to take some time off and heal. make the beast with two backs the other guys...

I pay for accident insurance.

What is accident insurance?

Is that something you take out from your own insurance company (read: not work related) to fill any gaps that your work insurance will not cover?

I'm guessing he means short-term disability.
Sucks about the way they're treating you. Hope you feel better soon.

Accident Insurance would be like AFLAC...and yes, it is designed to cover gaps in anything your other insurance doesn't cover. I got like $125 for sitting in the ER for 2 hours last Monday. They pay you for various things and visits you have to make.

I have a meeting with our HR lady this afternoon. My IT counterpart has stopped in to check on me 4 or 5 times today and each time she is like, "Why don't you take the rest of the day off"...Um...because they haven't decided if they are going to let me or not yet...
Maybe if I start coughing up blood on the CEO's desk...

you should put an assortment of jigs and or knives on your table and next time they check up on you, just tell them, i think im going to stab someone if you dont lay down and tell them its just a coincidence you have some jigs on your table. that should help.

I was going to make a bad joke about this being a rant thread but I don't think it would be appropriate given your circumstances.  Hope you recover quick.  I kinda understand where your coming from.  Good luck.

I'm sure it would be... 'side-splitting'

Rest up.
Tell them to make the beast with two backs off.
Whatever happens, I hear the best time to get fired is in the summer.

As happens way too often here, literally insult added to injury.  Sorry to hear about your situation, I hope you heal up and they come to their senses soon.
