nice cabby  [thumbsup]

I imagine that VW can get you the code by VIN... it's not tucked away in the manual w/the car?

i had to go to the dealer for the radio code for my BMW.  they would not do it over the phone.  i also had to show my registration and a photo ID.  YMMV.

Well, then it's a good thing the radio doesn't work. Sounds like she doesn't need the distraction...

Why the make the beast with two backs would they put a stereo in a Cabrio that disables like that???

It's an antitheft device. If people know that they stop working without constantly hooked up to power, they will be less likely to bother stealing them...

Why the make the beast with two backs would you steal stock radio from a cabrio? I mean seriously.

for her its perfect because she never really drove a car, so its a great "first car" and for a 99 man its clean very clean.. but yea very very underpowered
in NYC they stole my radio from my old 89 jetta TWICE, yep TWICE

The radio has to be removed, they the serial# to get the security code.  A little history on radio theft.  Back in the '70s and early '80s the norm was you couldn't walk two blocks in most cities without seeing a car with a broken window and a hole where the radio was.  BMW came out with the coded radio.  Others soon followed.  The theft problem greatly diminished.  Oh, is a coded radio any dumber than the immobilizer on a Ducati?

I know this is pretty much the obvious question, but have you looked to see if they slipped the code sheet in the owners manual (provided you have it)? I know it isn't the place to leave it if you are worried about your radio being stolen, but that is where I put mine. The dealer should be able to hook you up if you get stuck.

FWIW, I keep mine in the manual with my windowsticker and service receipts (yes, I'm OCD and keep everything  [laugh])

now you guys know where it is if you steal my radio  [thumbsup]

also...I like Cabrios...especially when there are cute girls driving them

snip...

that's where i kept mine.  then someone broke (climbed though the sun roof) into my my car and stole the manual and another set of keys out of the cup holder.  two completely worthless items to them. but i lost all of my maintenance records and the set of keys ended up costing $900 to get the wife's saab running again (think losing red key, had to replace the ecu since we could not get disable the oem alarm without the only fob we had).

sorry, im rambling.   [bang]

If the code card is not in the manual your going to have to take it to the dealer to get it pulled (unless you have the special keys which I'm guessing you don't) and they will have to get it from Germany.  Shouldn't cost you more than an half hour of labor. If it does take it elsewhere.

serial number is on the top, most audio shops have the keys to pull it. It starts with like "1Z1" and you'll need the vin.

take a 6 pack of coors light, and talk to the service advisor, tell him you want the radio unlocked, and BTW, heres some beer.  [beer] chances are they'll hook you up, since it takes litterally 10 minuets.

if they wanna charge you for the code, I'd rather have a aftermarket radio installed, those old radios were the suck.. a $100 audio express sony is gonna be better then what it came with.

I usually scribe the code into the top of the radio, if some one wants one of those POS radios they can have them.

the thing is 2 tires my tire insurance will cover because of bubble on teh sidewall, and they were trying to get out of that!
but I have to pay for them upfront and then the ins co sends me a check - sucks cause the car goes back soon too..
I did take the thing to the track so its my fault I guess

I hate my 2000 VW Passat.  Electronic problems as in the computer does not work.

Anyone know who is interested in a rosewood trim kit for 2000-2002 VW Passat.  Please let me know.  I never installed it and need to get rid of it.

Thanks.  I do not recommend the Passat and the one after it.  My sister's husband got it and got similar electronic problems.  I am not sure how the new ones are.

I forgot to add, my radio/cassette does not work either.  It is amazing how nice it is to drive without that and just hear all the squeaking noises from the car   ;).

Early 200x VWs had electrical issues out the wazoo. Window regulators, coil packs, ECUs the whole kit. I would say by the time you are getting to late Mk. 4 models (2004+) and Mk. 5 models (what they are on right now) you should be pretty good. We have a 2001 Passat (had to replace the window regulators) and a 2004 R32 and while they can be a bit spendy to have fixed at times, they are our cars of choice.

I do miss the level of service you get at a proper luxury car dealership though. Having a good experience with you VW is a lot like having one with your Duc. The dealership can make or break the deal.

My wife had one of those, a 95er.  Veeeery slow.  I used it for a couple of years and with my heavy foot it was a gas guzzler for a 4 cyl.  IIRC they were manufactured in Germany contrary to the Jettas so they were somewhat more reliable.  Had the typical VW power window problems though.  The back window attached to the removable 'roof' always leaked; even when professionally repaired.  She loved the car though and although it had a clunky auto. transmission, it always worked nicely.
