Hello,
I am going to be n San Diego from July 8th to the 17th and then head up to Portland. The San Diego part of my trip is business, then i will be joining my wife and some friends in Portland for a few days before i return to home in Baltimore. While in San Diego i will be staying in the tourist trap that you all know as the Gas Lamp district without a vehicle. I thought about shipping my bike so i would have it the entire time while i am in San Diego, as i will have off the weekend of the tenth. However, it seems shipping will cost between $900 to $1200 for a round trip shipment of my bike, and there is no guarantee my bike will ever make it. Since it would cost me $200 to fly to Portland i thought about renting a bike and riding it in two days.
Any thoughts?
Any thing cool happening while i will be in San Diego?
Thanks,
RB
I have rented from these guys twice

The cool thing is that you pick up and drop off the bike at the San Diego Ducati dealership GP Motorcycles
http://gpmotorcycles.com/ (http://gpmotorcycles.com/) about 5 minutes from the gaslamp. (they used to be within walking distance, but just moved in May)
All in all a painless experience
i saw that and actually they are running a special on the 696 rental. It seems to be cheaper then any other bike rental available.
The best idea would be to take the bike one way to Portland, which wouldn't work for the Ducati rental.

Nothing to see here, move along.
;D
What are you looking to do?
Surf?
Shooting?
TJ? [evil]
Hiking?
Food?
Karting? [laugh] (inside joke) but there are several good places to choose from.
Museums?
Music?
RB is good people.
But if he gets my beer from Steve there will be hell to pay.
;D
Thanks Statler, i wouldn't take a beer intended for you anyhow...i promise.
I would definitely like to catch a few local bands while i am there. The indie/rock/punk type stuff. I was a huge Rocket from the Crypt fan when they were around, that is sorta my speed. Any clubs/bars anyone can recommend....Casbah? Is there an online paper, or site that lists the local stuff?...City Paper...
Pick up a the "San Diego Weekly Reader" they're free come out every Thursday.

Plenty of clubs in the GasCramp area to keep you busy.
The Casbah is closer to Little Italy (which BTW has a local Ducati get together every 2nd Thursday of the month, July 9th in this case, check here for details: http://www.docsd.com/ (http://www.docsd.com/) )

nice, thanks.....i hate being a tourist. I usually try to go places i know people so i can hang with the cool kids, and not the tourists.
thanks
Since I just turned 60 I can't keep up with the cool kids (except while riding ;D) but I have been here since 1970 so I pretty much know the who/what/where in SD. My son who is 26 lives in PB, I'll ask him for suggestions when I see him later today
In luck our local Ducati meet is the second Thursday in Little Italy.
Easy walk from gaslamp. [thumbsup]
i gots yer karting
i will definitely be at the second Thursday meet.
So far i have only found EagleRider to have one-way service from San Diego to Seattle or Bend OR, and a 3 day rental is about $350 before 'other fees'. The price is fine since it will cost about 200 bones to fly, i just wish there was a location closer to Portland (Bend and Seattle are 3 hours away) and the only bikes to choose from are HD's from the San Diego location.
Scratch that....one way fees are above the normal rental fee (between $375 drop off in Bend, or $550 drop in Seattle) OUCH!!!!
I might as well ship my own bike...anyone have a reliable shipping company they would recommend?
thanks for all the help

No worries man. Just paying it forward. [thumbsup]
Well, there's OMSI (our local science museum).
There's also skiing/boarding on Mt. Hood, where I live with Mother.
The music scene is great, check this site out for concert listings and such: http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Home (http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Home)
Dantes has a good burlesque show.
Portland Underground tour: http://www.portlandwalkingtours.com/tours/underground_portland.php (http://www.portlandwalkingtours.com/tours/underground_portland.php)
McMenamins has a ton of cool pubs and hotels around along with more music: http://www.mcmenamins.com/ (http://www.mcmenamins.com/)
I haven't lived here long so some of the locals in the NorthWest section may have more/better ideas. [thumbsup]

If'n you do ship your bike, you can ship it to me, I'll recieve it and hold it in my garage. I can then help ship it back.

Thanks Trouble. The shipping home will be from Portland, but at this point the shipping will be outside my budget for pleasure on a business trip.
I will try to stop by second Thursday meet up thingy.

Dude rent a Ducati from GP cycles. I was kicking it with Dave from rent a duc this weekend and he's a great guy to support as he's supporting guys like you who don't have a bike at their destination!
I live in the Gaslamp so if you want to hang for a brew give me a ring. Oh and this Thursday is bike night in Little Italy. I'll be going and can offer a second bike if you want to go.
R.
What time does bike night get started, and where?. I know it is on little Italy but I will be on foot. Figure I will take the trolly up from the hyatt where I am staying.
Usually starts around 1830 here

Thanks for the 411
Made it to bike night yesterday and met up with Ruben, met a dude named matt on a cb350 with a benelli tank. Met Phil and had a nice conversation about his high mileage monster. Good time
rb
Faaak I was there, drinking across the street. ;D
Sorry I missed you RB.
Me and Matt hve been kicking it with RB for a few days. He gave us a hand adding coil overs to my TT. My buddy Matt gave RB a lid and I gave him my fav Ducati leather jacket and some gloves as he rented a Harley and is hitting the 1 heading to Santa Monica!
Ruben and matt are true aces!
Made it to Santa Monica thru heavy traffic, who would have thought people would be going to the beach on a Sunday? Ended up doing some slab to get out of the congestion, lane sharing/filtering is the shizzle.
So...
RB and I kicked it for his final night in SD. We hit up karl Strauss on Columbia, then headed over to Eldorado and a philosophical nightcap on my roof top over a few brews (and we water the palm tree there with "diluted" beer.)
RB is a cool ass dude and the wingman of all wingmen (except for me). Next time, we're heading to the Canyons man.
