I went to Atlanta for a week, kept my 2007 S2R 1000 in the garage while I was gone, and when I came back, part of the clear plastic and supportive instrument cowling on the right side developed a minor hairline crack. I suspect heat because it got well over a hundred Fº last week while I was gone. I have never bumped, or dropped anything on the cluster before. The crack just showed up. As I said, the crack is minor; however, I have no desire to replace the entire cluster.
Anyone know what type of plastic the instrument lens and cowling are made of ...and advise as how to repair and water proof this kind multi-plastic fracture?
it's my understanding the lenses and bezels are two different types of plastic bonded together, so it makes sense that they wouldn't have the same expansion and contraction qualities.
I've heard of temperature-induced cracks from many duc owners. many just put some silicone on the crack to seal it. you might want to consider the epoxy used to repair windshields as well, but dunno if anyone has tried that. if you were to do that, I would recommend pulling the top cover off the main gauge cluster before doing so.
