Um, due to buying a new place and the weather being crud, i have not ridden the bike in a few weeks. Went to start it the other day(Had a feeling it would be flat) and had to jump start it with a booster pack. Worked a treat. Ran it for a few minutes. Started fine the next day(Still no ride).

Just went to start it then, and it just seems to die when i push the go button. Does the same with the booster pack(All lights are strong, i can hear the fuel pump working=power is good). It just seems to power down as soon as i try and start it  :'(

Put the red key in, and the immobiliser has one long flash, then three very rapid flashes....

Any idea on what i have done to it this time?  ???

OK, I recon your battery is completely flat and it's triggered some kind of "computer" glitch.

I'd remove the battery and recharge (or replace).

Then take a nicely charged battery and see what happens.

If you're still having problems, I guess the "flashing rate"  indicates the problem, but I wouldn't worry till you've tried a good battery.

Simplest things always first.

I can recall a mate of mine pulling down his 240V compressor, as it didn't start. So there he is sitting in the garage with all the parts scattered around him as his wife comes in an tells him the fridge is off and if he could check the fuse box - then looking at him, asking why he'd pulled the compressor apart. To clean it, was his response. Went and reset the main cct breaker, put the compressor back together and it worked like a charm.

A lesson that no one else needs to learn  :)

Now the story was quite entertaining, but unfortunately the battery is as strong as a mule. The booster pack is also sitting on 100%.

I've done a bit of reading on the 'tech' area.  The three flashes means that it isn't recognising the keys.  Spoke to flywheels, they're giving me a call tomorrow, but without seeing the bike they said it sounds ECU'ish. All in all i'm f'ing over belongings at the moment. everything-house, car, bike(s) have given me major issues in the last four weeks....  [bang]

I had a similar problem with my 2003 1000M when I was in the US. Turned out to be the stater relay. Little black one under the seat near the battery. There are 2, one is the starter relay the other the fuel pump relay. End story was that the realy was dicky so would only fail at the wrong time and after it was replaced the other went out in sympathy a few weeks later.

Could be the answer Hugh, didn't you have a problem with the fuel pump relay recently??

Don't forget if you need a new relay Holden sell the same part at a quarter of the price of the Ducati part.

Hmm, could be the go. Would very much like that to be the go...

I did replace the fuel pump relay about 4 weeks ago. It had eventually failed so i had to fork out $17 for one.  I would love for that to be the problem  [bow_down]

What Holden is the relay off?? Methinks I get a couple of spares cos then I wont need them !!  [thumbsup] (Murphy is a prick!)

(While at work) went to holden, Mv Augusta, a local BMW/MERC mechanic, and none of them could help. Holden did come close with a 16amp relay, but i need a 20amp....

Surrounded by car dealers in Sutherland, so will try tomorrow before night shift.

Hmm, any chance my battery is just so old, and so flat that it's able to power the lights and cluster but not fire??  Remember the bike is not turning over at all, just making a 'powering down' sound....  ???

i think is could possibly be the battery. I had the same thing when i came back from my trip, light come on, needle cycle and then push the ignition button and just get clicking sound.  My battery is the orignal since 02 and always have this issue, if i haven't starter him for a while and even worse in the cold. For me i know it is the battery, i normally put it on charge then it will go first kick. i just too lazy to get a new one.

what model is yours and how old is the battery?

Ooh, that makes hugh excited. 05 model-same battery. Haven't ridden it for about a month... Booster pack doesn't seem to do anything, but i haven't tried charging it...

Hugh, I reckon it could just be your battery as well. Mine did the same when I hadn't ridden it for a month or so. Lights would come on, but a funny powering down sound when I hit the start button. I took out the battery and gave it a good charge and hey presto, all good. The flashing light thing is a bit of a mystery though. Perhaps the process of disconneting the battery will help it as well  ???
Anyway, its worth a try before you get into anyhting more expensive....ducsport

If you have a multi meter check the voltage across the battery terminals when you try to start the bike. If the volts drop to around 1/2 the voltage or more the battery is a dead.

A sparky test and diagnosis!
