Title: My open udder observations......
Post by: Gus Duc on July 02, 2009, 01:17:19 PM
So after selling my full Arrow carbons, I reinstalled my OEM exhaust & decided to see how it sounded with an open lid, DP ECU, & the open udder.

Got everything fitted, checkd for leaks, & fired her up...... sounded OK @ idle but once I went for a ride, it sounded terrible IMHO...... almost like the Arrows with no bass & under water [laugh]  Seemed to run fine & the plugs look good but I can't stand the sound so I didn't rev it passed 6K.......

Continued with the install & added the S pipes a OEM cans...... like how they look but too quiet...... all I here is clutch [laugh]  Still running the open lid & DP ECU & it feels rich...... not too bad but a little slugish.  You can really hear the intake now as the exhaust is so quiet.  Sounds good above 6K but way too quiet below that & surprisingly it seems to have lost TQ as well as HP IMHO.

Now I have to see if I can baffle the udder but more than likely I'll just run the stock setup & gop back to the OEM ECU & close the lid as it's pointless to dump the air & fuel in if the exhaust can't get it out fast enough.

Termis with baffles. [evil]

Nah.... Termi's are too long & the welds blow :P

Core them!

why are you trying to make your stock exhaust do what your sold exhaust did.

I'm not...... I was just using it as an example....... I really liked a bike that Stu did & it motivated me to do something similiar but I don't like the sound..... I can always buy another set of Arrows ;)

Termis for the sound or Zard for the looks!

Ive been happy with my Marving's- left and right high mount pipes. Had to remap the sheet out of it though.

Go with a set of boom-tubes and be done with it  [thumbsup]

I guess everyone has different taste. I like the sound on my S2R1000 with just the udder. I think it sounds cool. I cut the "s" pipe and mounted them to the udder and it sounds fine.

I too had Full Arrows on my S4RS and sold them. I put the udder back and have not looked back. Sounds cool and cleans her up in the rear... I always have riders telling me it sounds cool.  [moto]

Yeah..... the Arrows spoiled me because the sound is so full & deep & has a great pitch too..... the udder IMHO sounded crude & a little rough..... I suppose I should have tried it with a closed lid too as the open lid adds sound & other noises as well.

Did the S pipes change the sound ???  Post or email me a pic.... I'd love to see it [thumbsup]

I too really like the rear opened up but I don't want something too loud..... I felt that with the open udder & the open lid, above 5K was ridiculisoly loud...... & I like to use the motor [evil]

p.s.  Your S4RS along with the one Stu did is what made me want to try udder only [thumbsup]

This was my setup before the Zard system:

I just rotated the S-pipes so they pointed down, and sawed them off.  I don't think it changed the quality of the sound at all, but it might have helped point it away from the rider's ears.

Yup, I would have to agree. Adding and pointing the pipes away from the bike made it possible to ride without earplugs. As you can see below, S2R's mount on the outside and are smaller. The S4RS is larger and mount on the inside of the Bladder.

I used rivets to hold the pipes on both bikes:

Does make me wonder if you couldn't just fit some Harley-style straight-pipe baffles in there, just to deepen the sound.

I'm sure you could...... I noticed that my Arrow baffles fit nicely in the udder with no pipes but you would need to make some straight tips or weld them into place.

I'm toying with the idea of plugging the bottom outlet on the udder & running one cored OEM can or possibly a custom piece with a larger diameter pipe & can.  If it comes out nice, I'll take it off & have it Jet Hot coated silver.

I also run my s2r 1k with the open udder and just recently had my 6k service, and the guys at my dealship got bored and wanted to see what it was showing on the dyno.  they ended up showing that it got 80.15 max power and 60.55 max torque.  they said that performance was alot better then they though it would be but that the air/fuel ration was a little high it danced right around 15 which they said that over a long period of time can cause excess wear on the engine.

I'm running mine with just the udder and I'm a little worried that it might be running lean. Haven't pulled the plugs but I will this weekend.

I used the Packing and the perforated tubing from my Termi's I chopped up and created the perfect tone  [evil] and it also resulted in the right amount of back pressure so the bike doesn't run too lean.

It would look a lot cleaner if you used rivets instead of those exhaust brackets. My 2 cents.

ICON, I like the rivet idea  [thumbsup]. Did you have your exhaust Ceramic or Powder coated?

When I was running the Open Udder on my S2R1K I did notice a slightly lean condition.
fter installing a FATDUC I was able to get rid of all the poping on decell and the bike ran much better/stronger..

How do you seal the tips when you use rivets ???  Don't they leak ???

Ceramic all the way. Powder coat will bubble up with the heat.

Go to Lowes or Homedepot for the Rivet gun....$20, rivets $7 and the drill bit too. Your bike will look even better than it already is. [thumbsup]

Anyone know where I can get pipes like that?  I want to do this to my s2r100.

pardon my ignorance but aren't boom tubes just nicely cut tips?

It's a whole system.

Boomtuves still look like exhaust manifold with nice tips. I don't understand the craze
