Title: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: flyboy on May 20, 2008, 09:48:09 AM With the temp rising now that summer has finally hit us is there any way I can upgrade the cooling on my air cooled monster? I have a S2R1K and my oil temps are starting to get very high when I ride. Are there larger oil coolers I can buy or maybe even a fan to mount behind the stock cooler?
Thanks, Adrien Title: Re: Keep your monster cool on a hot day Post by: Slide Panda on May 20, 2008, 09:55:47 AM motowheels sells a larger oil cooler. I've also seen where folks added a 2nd identical cooler
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: DucSteve on May 20, 2008, 10:19:19 AM As long as you continue to use the synthetic oil, I hear the s2r1k is good to go up to 300F. I've seen it hit 250 260 and it runs fine, just dont touch it :P
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: flyboy on May 20, 2008, 10:26:13 AM Haha ill try to keep from touching her when she is hot :P. Today she reached 263 (first time taking her out since I changed the oil). I know its going to get at least 10 degrees hotter here in NM before fall comes around. I like the oil cooler on motowheels except for the $$$. Any other less expensive options before I spend all that cash? :-\
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: DucSteve on May 20, 2008, 11:08:19 AM add some coolant to the oil [bang]
edit: To clarify... Don't do this.... Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: Bick on May 20, 2008, 01:14:48 PM A little off topic, but I am thinking there must be something wrong with all your bikes!
I have never seen my SS1000 go over 220. I would think the full full fairing would hold in more heat. On a hot day, my S2R 800 runs @ 210-215. Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: flyboy on May 20, 2008, 02:21:31 PM You can add coolant to the oil with out problems? ???
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: JoDuc on May 20, 2008, 02:35:53 PM i'm in Florida and my S2R1K was always running hot until I installed the FULL TERMI SYSTEM. Yeah, it sux to have to pay so much for it, but it's a totally different bike AND it runs MUCH cooler. Probly 20-30 degrees better!
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: knightrider on May 20, 2008, 02:54:28 PM You can add coolant to the oil with out problems? ??? No No NOOOO oil and coolant dont mix, it was a joke, please dont do it. i think the previous post regarding coolant in the oil needs a disclaimer for the newbs Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: Buckethead on May 20, 2008, 02:59:25 PM No No NOOOO oil and coolant dont mix, it was a joke, please dont do it. i think the previous post regarding coolant in the oil needs a disclaimer for the newbs Whoops. Here comes oil change #2 so far this season. ;) Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: flyboy on May 20, 2008, 02:59:55 PM Too late. I added the coolant and after a few miles my bike imploded :'( lol. I figured it was a joke but I am open to any ideas to keep her running cooler. I like the cooler from motowheels but its expensive (aren't car radiators like way bigger and cheaper? ???) and since it is back ordered I dont want to have to wait the whole summer to get it.
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: faolan01 on May 20, 2008, 04:15:33 PM The only time I've had a problem with my S2R running REALLY hot was a ridiculously hot day last summer when I was stuck in traffic in a tunnel...she got up to 320 before I managed to get out of there and get moving again. Needless to say, I decided to take her in for an oil change the following weekend.
The moral of the story? Stay the hell away from tunnels at rush hour when it's hot out ;) Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: duc996 on May 20, 2008, 07:47:04 PM You can add coolant to the oil with out problems? ??? NO NO NO!!!! Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: Augustus on May 20, 2008, 07:56:52 PM Your bike my be running too lean. I also installed a full termi system and my bike runs cooler. Around the 230 area tops.

I have never seen my SS1000 go over 220. I would think the full full fairing would hold in more heat. On a hot day, my S2R 800 runs @ 210-215. Nope... head out to Vegas and come sit on the 215 with me. My bike regularly hits 250 but my all time high was in Idaho at Craters of the Moon park. They were doing major construction and the highway was literally a dirt road. It was 100 degrees out and we had to drive about 15mph over 10 miles. My bike got to 290 degrees before I pulled over to let it cool down. Once you start nearing 300 degrees I believe you are in danger of melting wires or other such unpleasantries. Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: kutter on May 21, 2008, 07:59:26 AM I would have to dig my manual out but I thought Ducati said it was good till something like 320 or so. As far as synthetic oil breakdown, that is not really a concern as any quality synthetic is stable till well over 400F. Just remember that we are used to seeing water temps that are much lower so when I first saw that I was troubled too but quickly got used to it in south Florida stop and go traffic.
Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: hypurone on May 21, 2008, 07:59:59 AM Anti-friction additives for the oil do wonders as well. I have used them for years in various applications. I am currently using one made by Justice Bros. [thumbsup] It is hard to find unless you can locate a distributor for them. :( This stuff has been good for a 20-30 degree reduction in temp in most everything I have put it in. Not to mention the added bonus of reduced wear and how much smoother the engine runs. My S4RS ran way beyond hot when in stock form (lean) and adding the additive (after breakin) reduced temps by the avg mentioned above. Then I added the full Termi system w/ ecu and temps are no longer an issue... ever!
I hear the Lucas brand is awesome as well. Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: DucSteve on May 21, 2008, 09:01:20 AM Oops, sorry about that, didn't mean to confuse you if you weren't sure whether I was speaking truth or not. :-X
Only way to cool an air cooled bike is to ride in the cold, or just ride faster [moto] Again, an S2R can run very hot and still run perfectly fine. I'd really only be worried when it gets closer to 300F Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: moto on May 21, 2008, 09:06:05 AM On my water cooled bikes, I use CYCLE LOGIC "Engine Ice" 1/2 Gallon (http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=590%7CFluids&CategoryID=789|Coolant&collection=588%7CStands%2CTools%2C%20Supplies%2C%20%26%20Fluids) and/or "Water Wetter".
It seems like it ran a little cooler with a SPEEDYMOTO Billet H2O Pump Housing: '02+ (http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=38%7CAluminum%20Billet&CategoryID=45|Ducati%20Monster%20Billet&vendoridtodisplay=0&filterFor=&startrow=61&collection=168%7CEuropean%20Motorcycle%20Parts). It must flow better. I have this on 3 of my bikes primarily to protect the impeller- but the side benefit was slightly cooler temps. -M Title: Re: Keeping your monster cool on a hot day Post by: Ducnial on May 21, 2008, 07:02:08 PM Rip the Duc turds from the fins, that wil help a little. Its caused mainly by lean running.
Only way to really improve is to add DP ECU |
