Title: Riding in the rain
Post by: He Man on May 20, 2008, 12:06:40 PM
I ride in  this horrifying downpour and my wheels developed these spots. They wont come of without a brillo pad and 3 minutes of scrubing. I soaked my wheel in simple green for a few hours and it still wont come of. Does anyone have any cleaninig recommendations. My wheel looks disgusting. I tried carb cleaner, simple green, detergent, ajax. nothing.

Depending on where on the tire the spots are have you tried any tire black products?  Something like Armor All or Black Magic.

i'm pretty sure he means on the rim itself, not on the tire.

(and no, i have no useful advice. sorry. :P)

yea i tried WD-40. no go. hell i even tried BRAKE FLUID. nothing. (no the brake fluid did not strip the paint or even rub of any black on the towel.) ill snap some pics tomorrow when i try attacking it with some kerosine. Im still trying to figure out waht it is. My swingarm has road grime that i had to use sandpaper to rub of. I need to get that thing coated.

Armor All or any tire shine product on tires is not a good idea, particulaly on bikes.  These products make tires slippery.

Weird...wonder what it is? What color is it?

It is the road tar from the newly paved West Side HWY?

Yeah that makes sense.  I figured if it was really close to the rim and in a spot where in no possible way would you be riding on it then it would be worth a try.

When you use that armor all stuff on your rim, it gets flung when you ride an onto the edge of your wheel. Ask me how i know.  [bang]

so this is my rim now.

Its called "white spotting". Caused by harsh chemicals attacking the powercoat.  The rain (moisture) caused  them to show up, the damage was already done.

Nothing you can do except powercoat.  Try some Nu-Finish type car polish, it might help hide them a little.

Stay away from wheel cleaners,  many contain very harsh chemicals.

Sorry man..

And I though my white rims sucked.  At least when mine get dirty, everything ALWAYS comes right off...   sorry to hear, although polished rims will look awesome!  Good luck

MUAHHAAH, washed that shit off. GUNK orange engine cleaner.  [thumbsup] but there are several large cracks of paint on my rim. :/
I did it by accient. was spraying my engine, and got bored so i tried to use it on my swingarm to get rido of the goo (and damn did it do a good job) and got over spray on my rim. Ended up working beautifully!

I just saw a TV commercial for Black Magic Titanium.  It's supposed to be wheel cleaner safe for all types/materials of wheels and supposed to clean off other gunk.  Anyone have any experience with it?

clean it off some how , then wax the rim to make cleaning easier in the future.

is the spotting raised or does it have any texture to it?

I don't really have any advice others haven't put out there, try the s100 tho I have had luck with it on gunk that was stubborn.

If it were me I'd replace em with BSTs.  Oh wait... I did that.  Okay then if it were me I'd send them to Nate to have magic performed (a.k.a. paint).  Oh wait... I did that with my BSTs.  Well- I certainly wouldn't expect some snake oil sold on tv to fix it.  If new wheels or a Frosty Finish isn't in your future then try to strip and polish them yourself before having someone else do the same for big money.

Would a chemical strip remove all the paint? theres already several large cracks in the paint on the rear wheel. The only thing i have a problem with is, how would it look? I dont want shiny bling bling wheels.

small note on simple green: extremely harmful to aluminum. be careful with that stuff.

What about if you were to scotch brite the hell out of them to get that sweet satin finish and then powdercoat them clear to preserve the finish and protect it ? Seen it done with hot-rod wheels, liked it.
